Today’s song is from the film Talwar ka Dhani-1956.
TALWAR KA DHANI-1956 was a costume drama and also a stunt film. When I first went to see this film in its second run in 1960 or so, I thought that this must be based on the story of “King Arthur and his sword”, but I was mistaken. Probably the producers had not even heard who this Arthur was, and they based their story on Gujarat background. Appropriately, the hero was also Manhar Desai (real name Malcom Alfredo Desai, a Goan, from 3-8-17 to25-2-92), who was a Popular Hero in Gujarati and Mythological films those days.
The Vikas production film was directed by Dwaraka Khosla-a veteran of 40 films in 30 years from 1932(Veer Kunal) to 1962(Reporter Raju). The Lyricists in this film were Anjum Jaipuri (for today’s song) and G.S.Nepali. The story, screenplay and dialogues were by Masood. The title was very misleading, but many films with Talwar were produced, like Talwar ka paani,Bedhari Talwar,Chauhani T., Bhawani T., Nangi T., Tati T., Tilasmi T. and also a Talwarwala !
Queen mother Sudha(Sulochana) sent her infant prince(Pakku) to a secret place thru her Loyal sardar(B.M.Vyas) to avoid torture by the rebell Villain Megha(Anwar).Megha’s army chases them but they escape safely.Megha starts killing all the loyalists and Queen sends S.O.S. to her loyal Thakurs. From them come Vijay(Manhar),Rani(Nadira) and Gopu(Maruti). They enter the Palace in disguise of Dancers and meet the Queen. They hatch a plan to kidnap the Princess and reach her to hideout of Prince. This plan is passed on to Megha by Indira(Shammi) the loyal maid.Megha allows the plan and then captures Prince,Princess and these 3 fighters. But a helpful Saroj(Kammo),maid helps them to freedom.
These 3 fighters collect an army of Thakurs and attack Megha. There is a fight in which Megha is burnt alive, instead of the Prince.
The Queen makes Vijay her Vazir and gets him married with Rani.
The cast of the film was Nadira, Manhar Desai, B.M.Vyas, Child artiste Pakku, Anwar Hussai, Shammi, Neeru (real name Shanta Kumari), Dalpat, Sulochana (Ruby Meyers), Kammo, Maruti (Parab) etc. The Hero Manhar Desai’s real name was Malkom Alfredo D’Souza – originally from Goa, but settled in Gujarat. He changed his name to work in films.
During the era of Silent films and Talkie films of the early years, it was a trend to take on a Hindu name for films. Whether the actor was Jew, Anglo-Indian, European or a Muslim, a Male or a Female, an actor or a singer, this trend was predominant. Of course, not all artistes changed their names- some continued with their real names, but made them shorter, like Majid, Masood, Rehman etc.
Most name changes were found in actresses. Some examples are Sabita Devi (Irene Gasper), Feroza (Susal Soloman), Indira Devi (Effie Hippolet), Lalita Devi (Bonnie Bird), Pramila (Esther Abraham), Sulochana (Ruby Myers), Seeta Devi (Renee Smith), Madhuri (Beryl Classen), Manorama (Winnie Stewart), Nadira (Florence Ezekiel), Meera (Muriel Alexander), Mohna (Mona Cabral), Kammo (Kamarjehan), Shyama (khurshid Akhtar), Purnima (Meher Bano), Indurani (Ishrat jehan), Ameeta (Qamal Sultana) etc etc.
Some examples of Males- Dilip kumar (Yusouf Khan), Kumar (Syed Ali Hasan Zaidi), Jagdeep (Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed), Ajit (Hamid Ali) etc etc.
20 years ago, there was another film with the same title, Talwar ka Dhani, featuring Anil Kumar aka Sardar Gul. This too was a stunt/Costume film like its earlier version.I remember having read in one interview of Dwarka Khosla, Director of the latter film, that this 1956 film was only a remake of the earlier film of the same name. No wonder, because many films were remade from old films of the early era. One example I remember off hand is that of the film Gunsundari. Original silent film Gunsundari – 27, was remade as Talkie Gunsundari in 1934.The Heroine was same-Gauhar Mamajiwala. Both films were directed by Sardar Chandulal Shah. 14 years later, Chandulal Shah’s nephew Ratilal Punatar made Gunsundari in 1948, with Nirupa Roy in the lead role. The story was the same in all 3 versions.
Similar history is for one more film. Film Anarkali was first made as a Silent film in 1928, with Sulochana (Ruby Meyers) as the heroine. Later, a Talkie film with the same name, same story and same Heroine was remade in 1935. What’s more, the film Anarkali was made once more in 1953 and even in this film Sulochana acted-not as a Heroine , but as Hero’s mother ! Thus, she became the first and the only actress to work in the same titled, same story 3 films. While there was only one example of a female star in this case, there were 2 male actors who did this. The first was W.M.Khan who acted in the film Alam Ara-1931, Alam Ara-1956 and Alam Ara-1971, that too in the same role singing the same song. All versions had the same story. The other actor was Ashok Kumar, who also worked in 3 films with the same Title-Kangan, in 1939, 1959 and 1972. Of course the stories were different in all films.
Actress Sulochana happens to be the only actress to have worked in most Same Titled films, in the same role. She featured as a Heroine in silent film Madhuri-28 and Talkie film Madhuri-1932, as well as Silent film Indira B.A.-1929 and Talkie film Indira M.A.-1934. She also featured in Silent film Bambai ki Billi-1927 and Talkie Bambai ki Billi-1936. She did 8 different roles in this film.
Talking of Remakes, Mala-41 was remade as Amar-54 in which actor Jayant did the same role in both films and Naushad was the MD for both films. Film Aurat-40 was remade as Mother India-1957 in which actor Kanhaiyalal did the same role in both films. Film Grihasti-48 was remade as Ghar basa ke dekho-63 and Malkin 53 was remade as Biradari-66.Then there was the film Chitchor-1976- a remake of the film Panghat-1943. There are many such cases in Hindi films. However, the same Title, same artiste in the same role and same story films are rare.
Manhar Desai was a Gujarati Christian-real name Malcolm Alfredo D’souza. He was born on 3-8-1917. He used to stammer when he was a boy. He used to act and sing in dramas and due to his stammering style, he was very popular on stage. After completing High school, he ran away to Bombay to join Films, but could not even enter any studio, Disappointed, he returned to his home and restarted studies. He became normal with treatment. He joined Wilson college in Bombay for graduation. In college he started acting and singing on stage. He had a friend N.C.Pandey, who was also mad after films. He promised Manhar that if he becomes a Director, he will make Manhar a Hero. While in college Manhar married his classmate, who was from U.P.
In 1947, Manhar got a call from his friend N.C.Pandey, who was to direct a Hindi film. He made Manhar the Hero of this film and thus fulfilled his promise. Toofani Sawar-47 was the first film of Manhar Desai, in Hindi. He was invited to work in the film Gunsundari-48 ( Gujarati), opposite Nirupa Roy. The film was Hit and he acted in the next film Mangal Phera-49 with Nirupa Roy. This too became a Hit film in Gujarati and then there was no looking back. His next Hindi film was Madhosh-51 opposite Meena kumari. Following their success in Gujarati, Nirupa Roy and Manhar were paired in several Mythological films in Hindi. Films Naag Panchami-53 and Shivratri-54 made him a popular Hero in Hindi mythological films.
It is a coincidence that the Two film stars known for Mythological films, namely Shahu Modak and Manhar Desai, both were Non Hindus and were Christians.
Manhar Desai was fond of Reading. During breaks in shooting, he would catch up with his reading. He also was a good painter. Manhar worked in 106 Hindi films. His last film was Nal Damyanti-88. In the last phase of his career, he was disillusioned about working in films in this era, so he gave up working and retired. Manhar Desai died on 25-2-1992.
Today’s song is sung by Asha bhosle and chorus. Enjoy This 68 year old song….
