Ghulam Ali is a singer who is an idol of music lovers across India & Pakistan and the diaspora of the two countries. He was born on 5th December 1940 in Sialkot of undivided India.
His name ‘Ghulam Ali’ was given by his father, a great fan of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan who, in the past, used to live in Lahore. Ghulam Ali had always been listening to Khan since childhood.
Ghulam Ali had an opportunity to meet Bade Ghulam Ali Khan as a teenager and sing the Thumri “Saiyyan Bolo Tanik Mose Rahiyo Na Jaye” in his presence. After which Bade Ghulam Ali Khan accepted Ghulam Ali as his disciple. (As per what I have read at various places on the internet).
Ghulam Ali started singing for Radio Pakistan, Lahore in 1960. Along with singing ghazals, he composed music for his ghazals. His compositions are based raagas of Hindustani Classical Music, and sometimes include a scientific mixture of raagas. His style and variations in singing ghazals by blending Hindustani classical music with poetry was unique and this made him different from other ghazal singers. He has also sung in a few Hindi films after he was was introduced to Bombay cinema with a Urdu song “Chupke Chupke Raat Din” written by the poet Hasrat Mohani in BR Chopra’s film, ‘Nikaah’ (1982). Asha Bhosle has done a few albums with him.
‘Maati Maangey Khoon’ (1984) was a film that had music by Rahul Dev Burman. He also used this ghazal rendered by Ghulam Ali and written by Mohsin Naqvi.
I have been listening to this song for years without being aware that it was from a film. Recently, I saw ‘Maati Maangey Khoon’ on some satellite channel and filed away the song for a post dedicated to the legendary singer.
The film had Shatrughan Sinha- Reena Roy- Raj Babbar- Rekha in the lead with Amjad Khan & Om Puri playing antagonists. Tanuja played the character of pagli-maai whose connection with the main characters get revealed towards the end of the film. The film had a regular masala story with lost-n-found family coming together at the end, after avenging the atrocities they had to undergo.

A wonderful, famous and very popular ghazal, from the pen of Mohsin Naqvi, composed and sung by Ghulam Ali – it has a very interesting and bizarre circumstance. The poet, the protagonist is having a conversation with his own awaargi, his own aimless and meandering wanderings. It is a very unique thought, one’s own misery and aimlessness is personified as another entity and the poet is talking to it. Again and again in these couplets, there is a reference to a barren desert, so strikingly emphasizing the intense and bereft loneliness that now populates the poet’s heart. The poet has used more than one word to represent this desert within – dasht (दश्त) and sehra (सहरा). Both these words have the same meaning.
The compelling and fascinating thought ordained in this ghazal is that the loneliness is so intense and so insurmountably prominent within the mind of the poet that, in the absence of any other company, the poet is talking to his own loneliness.

This foolhardy aberrant heart of mine

Why is this heart so exhausted, so vacant
The desolate barren desert it is now

Awaargi – आवारगी = Aimless wanderings
Bujh gaya – बुझ गया = Extinguished; In context – Vacant, Exhausted
Dasht – दश्त = Desert, Barren land
Shahar – शहर = Habitat, City, Populated area

thank you Sudhirji for the painstaking work in explaining the song. It helped in making the song understandable.
after sending this post, I saw the opening scenes of the movie. It was made by Shatrughan Sinha’s Ramayan Chira & directed by one of his brothers.
Also, the video in this post is a compilation of the song as it appears through the film from start to end, which may explain the color of the dress/sarre that the characters are wearing.
the film starts with the song as Shatrughan Sinha walks into the village, returning after growing up into a man. The last part of the song is as that character is dying

The saari faux pas is the same scene.
Shatrughan Sinha is tilling the field, and he is hurt and bleeding.
Rekha and Raj Babbar appear in that scene, Rekha is horrified seeing Shatrughan’s condition and runs to him.
That is all that takes to change a dress.

I am not sure if Anand Bakshi or RD Burman tweeked any part of the song to make it suitable for the film
But the original was sung by Ghulam Ali written by Mohsin Naqvi and also composed by Ghulam Ali himself.
I am sure there are knowledgeable followers of the blog who will enlighten us

The lyrics of the song have original she’rs written by Mohsin Naqvi without a change of word. While the tune is the same as sung by Ghulam Ali in his original non-film ghazal album, the prelude and interlude orchestra in this song are different.

Yes, this is very much the original – words and the tune et al.
I am sure that a ghazal singer of the stature of Ghulam Ali would have made it a pre-condition that the original will not be tweaked, for use by the producers of this film.
