Hullo Atuldom
I love to see films in which actors who are siblings, parents with the actor or related in someway with the actor, cast in important roles. There are umpteen such films in India – in all languages. The film, in this category, that I really love to see (and have seen many times) is “Kal Aaj Aur Kal” which had the whole Kapoor Khandaan enacting their real-life relationships. Additionally, it had Babita who went on to become the daughter-in-law of the family, just as in the film. Then there is “Zamaane Ko Dikhaana Hai” which had Randhir & Rishi Kapoor playing brothers. There was one more movie in 2012 -“Housefull 2”- that had the two playing brothers who are constantly competing with each other etc.
I am sure there have been many more such movies where actors have lived there off-screen relationship on- screen too. I am not counting the Raj Kapoor 1951 classic “Awaara” in this as Prithviraj Kapoor & Raj Kapoor don’t share screen space as father & son as they are unaware of their relation till late in the film; and Shashi Kapoor also doesn’t have screen time with his father or brother in the film.
“Aashik Aawara” (1993) was a film made by Eagle Films & Weston Components and presented by Eagle Films. That means Parvesh Mehra was the producer and Umesh Mehra was the director. Lyrics were by Anand Bakshi & Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors. Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurty, Sadhana Sargam, Udit Narayan, and Vinod Rathod were the playback singers used for the 10 songs of which one had a male-female versions.
The film was billed as the debut for Saif Ali Khan & Mamta Kulkarni though “Parampara” & “Tirangaa” (respectively) released a few weeks before “Aashik Aawara”. Saeed Jaffery, Rita Bhadhuri, Kadar Khan, Rakesh Bedi, Mohnish Behl, Guddi Maruti, Archana Puran Singh, Satish Shah, Sharat Saxena, Pankaj Dheer, etc etc were in important supporting roles. Navin Nischol & Sharmila Tagore (in guest appearances) played parents of Saif Ali Khan’s character who get killed in the start of the film.
So, in effect, this film had actors playing out their real-life relationship though they don’t share screen space.
The plot of “Aashik Aawara” (as it is spelt in the titles of the film) was very simple:-
Jaidev Singh (Saif ) who looses his parents as a child, is looked after by a kind conman (Kadar Khan) alongwith his own son (Rakesh Bedi). Growing up into a good-looking youngster, Jimmy (Jaidev) gets into the household of Kedarnath (Saeed Jaffery) impresses the bahu (Rita Bhadhuri), falls in love with the daughter (Mamta Kulkarni) of the family. Since the film is Indian, there is a twist in the tale with Archana Puran Singh posing as the widow (Sharmila Tagore) of the taxi driver (Navin Nischol) who was, once instrumental in saving the life of Kedarnath. All the impersonation by Archana Puran Singh & Jimmy are aimed at getting a slice of Kedarnath’s wealth. Simple, no?
All-in-all an entertainer that showcased the talent of the (then) young actors, their dancing skills; there were some comic scenes for Saif.
“Aashik Aawara” is making its debut on the blog with a song that has Sharmila Tagore lip-syncing to Alka Yagnik’s vocals. The song shows a contented family with a husband (Navin Nischol) who is a fan of his wife’s singing. Later, he also plays that song in his cab, Kedarnath hears it and appreciates it.
8th December is the birthday of Sharmila Tagore. She was born in 1944 in Cawnpore (Kanpur now) into the prominent Tagore family that was related to the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Her first appearance in films was in the Satyajit Ray directed Bengali movie “Apur Sansar” in 1959 as a 14-year old. That means she has been in public eye for close to 65 years. She was the second highest paid actress from 1966-69 along with Nanda & Waheeda Rehman and became the highest paid from 1970-75 alongwith Mumtaz after her pairing with Rajesh Khanna was appreciated by audiences. Aradhana, Daag, Safar, Amar Prem, Aavishkaar, Choti Bahu, Raja Rani, Maalik and Tyaag were the films that had her as Rajesh Khanna’s heroine of which 6 were superhit. Sanjeev Kumar was another actor with whom we saw her in four films. Then she acted in Dastaan as Dilip Kumar was the hero. Shashi kapoor was her celebrity crush with whom she acted in 9 films. She was also cast opposite Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and of course (how did I forget) Dharmendra. Who can forget “Anupama”, “Mere Humdam mere Dost”, “Yakeen” & my family’s favorite “Chupke Chupke”.
Wishing the elegant, graceful, dimpled Sharmila Tagore a very happy birthday. May she have a great time with her loved ones.

chaand sooraj mast hawaayen
mausam din aur raat
chaand sooraj mast hawaayen
mausam din aur raat
chalte hai sansar mein sab
sur aur taal ke sath
ik ritu aaye ik ritu jaaye
jeewan jaaye beet
saat suron ke sangam se banta hai sangeet(aa aa aa)
saat suro ke sangam se banta hai sangeet(aa aa aa)
saat suro ke sangam se banta hai sangit(aa aa aa)
is sangeet se bante hain
jeewan ke saare geet
