Hullo Atuldom

Raghuvaran- a name not many followers of Hindi films may be familiar about. Maybe if I list out some of the Hindi films that he acted in, Hindi Film Fans (HFF) will recognize him by the characters he played. He was popular in films made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada & Malayalam. He had a with his special style and voice modulation. He played mostly negative or grey-shaded characters. Like all aspirants into the film industry, his first films had him play the main protagonist, but these met with little success. ‘Silk Silk Silk’ in which he played a villain opened the floodgates of offers for him and he got a spate of Tamil films.

Raghuvaran played a character similar to Prem Chopra’s role in “Trishul” in the Tamil film “Mr. Bharat”. The character that Raj Babbar played in “Sansaar” (1987) was originally played, in the Tamil film, “Samsaram Adhu Minsaram” (1986) by Raghuvaran. His act as a father, of a mentally & terminally ill child, was well-received & appreciated. He started acting in films in 1982 (in Tamil & Malayalam), 1987 (in Telugu), 1996 (in Kannada) & 1990 (in Hindi). By 1990 he had found success in big-ticket South Indian films. I have seen a few of his Tamil films & liked his work. His Hindi debut was in “Izzatdaar” (1990). “Shiva” (1990), “Rakshak” (1996), “Hitler” (1998), as Amrish Puri’s son in “Lal Badshah” (1999) & “Grahan” (2001) were his other films.

“Izzatdaar” was directed by K.Bapaiah & produced by Sudhakar Bokade. It had Laxmikant Pyarelal as music directors & Anand Bakshi as the lyricist. It had 5 songs of which one song is on the blog.

In that post I had just mentioned who played what character/ role. I had mentioned that Madhuri Dixit played Dilip Kumar’s granddaughter & Swapna (from South Indian films) played Dilip Kumar’s daughter. I had also mentioned that Govinda played a young-man who is initially on the wrong side of the law, but gets reformed once he fall in love with Madhuri. He also realises that he has been wronged by the same group of villains as Dilip Kumar’s character. Anupam Kher (a jailor) & Shafi Inamdar are Dilip Kumar’s friends. Additionally, there are Shakti Kapoor, Bharathi, Asrani, Tej Sapru, Mukri, Dilip Dhawan, Yunus Parvez etc. in supporting roles. Of course, as I have said above, Raghuvaran made his Hindi debut in this film as Swapna’s husband & the villain.

Recently, I saw a video on youtube which enlightened me about the fact that Raghuvaran was born on 11th December 1958 in Palakkad dist of Kerala, to parents who were Malayalis. On googling, I also found that he had taken Piano training from the Trinity College London. He was part of a drama troupe and that is where he was spotted. He had a life full of ups-n-downs and eventually, (it is said) he took to alcohol & substance abuse. He died at the age of 49 due to organ failure in 2008.

There is one name in the cast of “Izzatdaar” that is an inspiration/ idol for every single actor who has entered the film industry after him. He used to say that he (himself) was a fan of Dada Moni a.k.a. Ashok Kumar. It is said that he was a pioneer of method acting and getting himself into the ‘skin’ of some roles that he played, got him the epithet ‘Tragedy King”. He acted in a few comic characters to break the monotony. He was the ‘First Superstar of Indian Cinema’.

I need not specify that I am speaking of Dilip Kumar who made his debut into films in 1944 through a Bombay Talkies production “Jwar Bhata”. He was part of the “Golden Trio- Trinity” Dilip- Raj-Dev. He was part of such super hits as “Devdas”, “Jugnu”, “Deedar”, “Aan”, “Andaz” and many more. He played characters with a different emotional quotient in “Kohinoor”, “Azaad”, “Leader” & (of course) “Naya Daur”. Unfortunately, there is no film featuring the ‘Trinity’ together though there is “Andaz” with Raj Kapoor & “Insaniyat” with Dev Anand.

He had successful pairing with all the leading actresses of his time. In the 1970s too, heroines of the next gwneration, Sharmila Tagore, Saira Banu, Leena Chandavarkar, Mumtaz etc. and Rakhee, Rekha from the later set, agreed to play small roles, even mother-characters for a chance to be in the same frame as the “Thespian”. “Shakti” had Rakhee playing his wife & (her normal hero) Amitabh Bachchan’s mother. Rekha acted with Dilip Saab in “Qila”, one of the last released films of the Thespian.

I am unsure about which was the first film I saw of this actor, but I think I have seen all his films post 1980 beginning with “Kranti” where he played a freedom fighter & father to Manoj Kumar (an actor who was a huge fan of Dilip saab). And to think that he must have been only in his 40s when he played father to Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, grandfather to Sunjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Govinda etc.

Life is full of strange occurrences- one of them being that the “Golden Trio” are all remembered in the month of December. Both Dilip Kumar & Raj Kapoor have their birth-dates in December :- 11th & 13th respectively. Since 2011, we remember Dev Anand, too, in December as he passed away on the 3rd December.

Let us get on to the song from “Izzatdaar” which has Dilip Kumar celebrating the wedding of his daughter with his friends joining in the singing & dancing. Bharathi is looking on adoringly from the sidelines.
P.S. The song reminds me of all the Dilip Kumar dances of yesteryears, though not to the level of “mere pairon mein ghungroo”. Whatsay???
