‘Spy In Goa’ (1966) was produced by H Ram and K Lal under the banner of Suresh Pictures and was directed by Dharam Kumar. The cast included Shaikh Mukhtar, Randhawa, Malika, Mohan Sheri, Aruna Irani, Amarnath, Hercules, Meenaxi, Sujata, Dilip Dutt, Kesari, Lalita Kumari, Maruti, Helen etc. The film was originally titled as ‘Panic in Goa’ and the film’s posters in this title were issued. The film belongs to the action-thriller genre.
I got to know the name of the film’s director, Dharam Kumar for the first time in Arjun Hingorani’s Blog wherein he mentioned his name as ‘Deepak Asha ( Dharam Kumar)’ while discussing his association with India’s first Sindhi film, ‘Abana’ (1958) which he directed jointly with Deepak Asha. As per Sindhiwiki, Dharam Kumar’s real name was Deepak Diyaldas Tolani who was born on November 26, 1919, in Tando Adam, Sindh (now in Pakistan). He started his early film career with a pseudonym, Deepak Asha.
In the early stages of post-partition, Deepak Asha used to visit many Sindhi refugee camps all over India and entertain the refugees with his songs in which he advocated the need to preserve ethnic identities of Sindhis in India. (Source: The Politics of Memory Among Sindhi Hindu in India by Nandita Bhavnani).
Based on these two pseudo names, I checked his filmography which includes some Sindhi and Punjabi films in addition to Hindi films. As Deepak Asha, he directed Hindi films like ‘Jalte Deep’ (1950), Ghamand’ (1952) and Deewali Ki Raat’ (1956). With the same name, he directed the first Sindhi film in India, ‘Abana’ (1958) jointly with Arjun Hingorani. He directed his next Sindhi film, ‘Insaaf Kithe Ah’ (1959). With ‘Road No.303’ (1960) and thereafter, he directed all his Hindi films under a new name, Dharam Kumar. However, he continued to use the name, ‘Deepak Asha’ while directing/acting in Sindhi and Punjabi films.
In all, Dharam Kumar directed 17 Hindi films, most of them belonging to the stunt/action/suspense genre. Some of Hindi films which he directed were ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ (1961), ‘Captain Sheroo’ (1963), ‘Ek Saal Pahale’ (1965) ‘Chale Hain Sasuraal’ (1966), ‘Rustam Kaun’ (1966), ‘Murder On The Highway” (1970) etc. The last Hindi film which he directed was “Truck Driver’ (1970). He continued to produce/direct/act in Sindhi and Punjabi films till his last. He passed away on July 28, 1993, in Mumbai. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai honoured him by naming a junction in Mulund Colony as ‘Shri Deepak Asha Chowk’ in 1999.
Coming back to ‘Spy In Goa’ (1966), the film is available in the VCD format on one of the video sharing platforms albeit in a somewhat edited version. The story of the film is as under:
A gold smuggling syndicate headed by Dhaniram (Amarnath) operates under the supervision of Sherry (Mohan Sherry). Sherry is expecting a boat with smuggled gold on the coast of Mumbai. One of their syndicate’s men has turned into a police informer who informs the police from a public telephone booth when he is shot dead by a syndicate’s gang member. A police team is able to capture the boat with smuggled gold during which one of the gang’s persons identified as Kundan gets injured in the police operations. The police arrest him and admit in the hospital.
Sherry is disturbed by this news as Kundan may spill the beans to the police. He entrusts the work to Julie to eliminate Kundan in the hospital while he is in the police custody. But the plan fails and Kundan escapes from the police custody. The entire gold smuggling syndicate decides to shift their operations to Goa in a hotel owned by Dhaniram. One of the gang members who has seen Kundan (Randhawa) in a boat at a Goa coast reports to Sherry who put Reeta (Malika) to woo Kundan so that she could bring him to the hotel.
In the past, Reeta loved Kundan, but he did not respond. When she goes to meet Kundan, who is a boatman ferrying the passengers, he tells her that he is not Kundan but Raja. But Reeta does not believe him, thinking that at Goa, he must have changed his name to Raja. Even Raja did not bother about the name Kundan or Raja as he has now started liking Reeta. Sherry’s plan to capture Kundan through Reeta does not work as she gives precedence to her love for Kundan/Raja over her loyalty to the syndicate.
Meanwhile, an Arab checks into the same hotel in which syndicate members are staying. Sherry suspects that he may be an escapee from the jail on whom a reward of Rs.10000/- has been announced by the police as per the newspaper report which he has read. His name is Jaswant (Sheikh Mukhtar). While confronting him, Jaswant agrees and Sherry blackmails him to join in his gold smuggling syndicate. In his first job, Jaswant successfully transports the smuggled gold from the Goa coast to Sherry’s hideout. Sherry puts Lily (Aruna Irani) to keep a tab on Jaswant.
Sherry is still worried about the presence of Kundan/Raja in Goa. He entrusts one of his aids to put a time bomb to blast his boat when he is ferrying the passengers. However, here also the good providence helps Kundan/Raja to escape from the bomb blast which destroys his boat. Sherry suspects that it is Reeta’s love for Kundan/Raja which is helping him to escape from his plan. He, therefore, forbids Rita to go out of her hotel room. Kundan/Raja himself comes to the hotel to meet Reeta disguising himself as an Arab when he is caught, as his real face is now known. Sherry wants to know from him as to what information he has shared with the police. Kundan/Raja says that he has nothing to do with either the gold smuggling gang or with the police. Not satisfied with his answers, Sherry orders Jaswant to eliminate Kundan/Raja. Reeta runs away from her hotel room and informs Kundan/Raja’s friend that his life is in danger, and he should help him. She gives him his whereabouts where he gets Kundan/Raja freed.
It turns out that it is two police moles in the gold smuggling syndicate – Lily and Jaswant through which the entire gold smuggling gang is busted with the help of Kundan/Raja and his friend. Neither Lily nor Jaswant are aquainted with each other when they were operating as undercovers in the gold smuggling syndicate. Police arrest Dhaniram and Sherry. Raja and Reeta unite.
‘Spy In Goa’ (1966) had six songs written by Yogesh Gaud which were set to music by Robin Banerjee. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘sambhaalo zaraa dil ko o bandaa parwar’ rendered by Suman Kalyanpur. The song is picturised on Malika in the hotel where the gold smuggling syndicate members stay. In the song picturisation, Mohan Sherry (smoking cigarette), Randhawa disguised as an Arab and Sheikh Mukhtar with Aruna Irani among others are present. There were two choreographers in the film, Herman Benjamin and Kamal. I guess, the song under discussion may have been choreographed by Herman Benjamin.
This song is melodious, pleasant to the ears and gives a nostalgic feeling of the bygone era of Bollywood dances.
Incidentally, in the song, there is a display board in the shape of a drum with the name, ‘Ted Lyons and His Cubs’. The musicians playing in the background are from the same band with Terrence Lyons, the head of this rock and roll band who is playing drum. He is a brother of Edwina Violette, one of the dancers in Hindi films of the 1960s. The person playing guitar may be from the Ted Lyons band who has been identified on IMDb as Tricky Joe. This band was in great demand from Hindi films during the 1960s especially for dance-songs with western beats. Some of the films in which the band appeared were ‘Boxer’ (1965), ‘Bedaag’ (1965), ‘Mere Sanam’ (1965), ‘Gumnaam’ (1965), ‘Afsaana’ (1966), ‘Anita’ (1967), ‘Raat Aur Din’ (1967) among many other films.
