#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
—————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Taaj Aur Talwaar-1956’. This movie was directed by Dwarka Khosla for ‘Satya Rai Productions, Bombay’. It was produced by Satya Rai. The cast of this movie included Shashikala, Smriti Biswas, Daljeet, Altaaf, B.M. Vyas, Maruti, Nehru, Indu Pal, Kantakumari, Heera Sawant, Alka, Nazeer, Ravikant, Tandon, Verma, Satya Kumar and others.

“Taaj Aur Talwaar-1956” was passed by Censor Board on 05.01.1956. And it has ten songs as mentioned in HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960). The ten songs in this movie were contributed by Six lyricists viz. Uddhav Kumar, Satya Rai, Indeevar, Shyam Hindi, Ismail Azad and K. Razdan. The singers for the songs in this movie are Hemant Kumar, Ismail Azad, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begam, G.M. Durrani and Sudeept Kumar.

The movie “Taaj Aur Talwaar-1956” made its debut on the blog on 01.09.2013. So far, only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog and this was presented by our inhouse encyclopedia Shri Arunkumar jee. While presenting this song ‘dil ki baatein dil mein hi rakhnaa’ Shri Arunkumar jee has given the story of this movie which I am reproducing below.

Thakur Vijay Singh is the ruler of his jaagir. His daughter is Rajkumari Shanti. One day, while on an outing with sahelis, Rajkumari Shanti finds a young handsome man wounded and unconscious on the road. With help of others, she brings him to her palace. She tends him, nurses him back to good health and in the meantime, also falls in his love. While they are busy in singing and taking rounds around the customary tree etc, her father does not approve all this, as he wants that she should become the ruler after him. His commander of army, Rana Jung Bahadur, has an eye on the jaagir and he is waiting for an opportunity.
One day, Rajkumari Shanti, in the disguise of her maid, goes out to meet Amar, her lover. Rana comes to know about it through his cronies and informs the Thakur immediately. The Thakur orders Rana to attack the lover Amar.
The trusted maid of Rajkumari learns about it and she goes in the disguise of Rajkumari, to inform and warn the lovers. The soldiers of Rana kill this maid thinking that she is the Rajkumari. Rana captures the Thakur and declares himself the ruler.

Amar, who is actually a popular dacoit and helper of poor people, and Rajkumari Shanti go underground. They gather an army of loyal friends and attack Rana. In the final duel Rana is killed, Thakur is rescued and reinstated as the ruler. Thakur Vijay Singh pardons Amar. Amar and Shanti get married.

Today I present a song from this movie which is sung by Shamshad Begam. I came across this song just recently and I do not remember to have listened to it earlier before. However, I feel that this song deserves to be a better known song. The poetry in this song, its singing and the overall composition is so lovable and aptly creates the mood of the song i.e. inviting one to fall in love and live that memorable moment of love.

While going through the details of this movie ‘Taaj Aur Talwaar-1956’ in Geet Kosh Vol-III, I find this interesting information mentioned about the today’s song. The list of the songs given in Geet Kosh, mentions the name of Geeta Dutt as the singer for this song. However, the foot note on the page of this movie in Geet Kosh mentions that ‘as per the film promotion booklet of this movie’ thesong included in the movie has the voice of Shamshad Begam. But, the records for this song had the voice of Geeta Dutt. Since Geet Kosh mentions that the records were released I tried to find if I could get the link of this song in Geeta Dutt’s voice too. But I could not find it. If we could find it, it surely would be a treat to have this song in the voices of both the singers.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please. I don’t think that this movie is available on internet or on any video sharing platform as of now.

For now let us listen to this song now…Only the audio of this song is available.

taaron ki dolee mein
dekh le ae ae◦◦◦ae

jeewan ke mele mein
dekh le ae ae◦◦◦ae
hoye

naa waapas aaye
naa aaye re
ho o◦◦ o◦◦◦ o raat muhabbatwaalee
guzar naa jaaye
naa waapas aaye
naa aaye re
ho o◦◦ o◦◦◦ o raat muhabbatwaalee
