‘Rustam Kaun’ (1966) was produced by A Jaiswal under the banner of Amrit Kala Mandir and was directed by Dharam Kumar. The cast included Randhawa and Malika in lead roles supported by Kamal Mehra, Mumtaz, Aruna Irani, Saudagar Singh, Shyam Kumar, Joginder, Hercules, Polson, Tun Tun, Rajmala, Meenaxi, Shakila Banu Bhopali, Jagdish Kamal, Samson, Jagdeep etc. During the making of this film, Randhawa and Malika fell in love with each other. Eventually, they got married in 1968.
Sardar Singh Randhawa (1933 -2013), better known as Randhawa was the younger brother of Dara Singh. Like his brother, Randhawa came to Hindi films from wrestling background. In the early career in Hindi films, he got side roles in films in which his elder brother Dara Singh was in lead roles. Randhawa’s first film was ‘Aawaara Abdulla’ (1963) and his first film in a lead role was ‘Son Of Hatimtai’ (1965). As a lead actor, he worked in the films in the genre of Action, Stunt, Fantasy, Mythology and Costumes dramas. In the 1970s, the film audience interest in these genre of films was waning. Randhawa switched over to doing character roles in the films. In all, he worked in around 60 films. ‘Duplicate’ (1998) was his last Hindi film.
Randhawa passed away on October 21, 2013, at the age of 80 due to heart-attack. His son, Shaad Randhawa is an actor.
Malika Askari, better known as Malika, is the elder sister of Mumtaz. Their parents were from Iran – the family shifted to British India. Her father was a dry fruit merchant. In 1948, Malika’s parents were separated. Both Malika and Mumtaz were looked after by their mother, grandmother and their aunt in Mumbai. Due to financial hardship, Malika started working in Hindi films as a child artist.
Malika started her Hindi film career as a child artist in 1955 with ‘Darbaar’ (1955), ‘Shaahi Chor’ (1955) and ‘Sakhi Hatim’ (1955). After working in 8 films as a child actor, Malika got her first break in adult role in ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959). The next phase of her career was working in side/supportive roles in romance and social genre of films during which she worked around a dozen films. From 1963 and up to 1968, Malika has majorly worked in action/stunt/mythological films with a few films in lead role. During this period, she worked with Randhawa in five films.
After her marriage with Randhawa in 1968, she did not work in any films with her husband but continued to work in side/supportive roles till her last film, ‘Pyaar Kaa Rishta’ (1973). Thereafter, she has confined herself to be a housewife. In the recent times, Malika’s pictures appear on social media whenever Mumtaz is on her India visit.
Coming back on ‘Rustam Kaun’ (1966), fortunately, a good quality of the film is available online albeit the edited one. I have watched the film very recently which belongs to the action genre. In the film, the fight sequences, horse ridings, club dances, qawwali together take almost equal footage with dialogues scenes. The story of the film is set out below:
Raja (Randhawa) and Suraj (Kamal Mehra) are on a hunting expedition on their horses in a forest. On the way, they take shelter for the night in a hotel in the vicinity of the forest run by Chandni (Malika) and her father. Chandni is impressed by Raja tackling a rough hotel guest, Dilawar (Hercules). Later, Dilawar becomes Raja’s friend. A Doctor (Shyam Kumar) who stays in the forest with his staff who is in the business of eggs of wild fowls, is a frequent visitor to the hotel as he secretly loves Chandni. In fact, Doctor is in a business of smuggling precious stones through eggs.
The next day, Raja and Suraj proceed into to the deep forest for hunting. Chandni accompanies them as a guide. While hunting, they gets cornered by a group of tribals for entering their forbidden territory. All the three are taken to the tribal Sardar who pronounce them the death sentence. When Doctor comes to know about it, he rushes to tribal Sardar and requests him to remit the sentence as they were new to this region. King agrees but puts a condition that Suraj must defeat their best wrestler to get them released. In the fight, Raja defeats tribals’ best wrestler. Sardar releases Raja, Suraj and Chandni but request them to stay for some days as his guests.
During his stay, Raja becomes suspicious of the activities of the Doctor as he feels as to why a doctor should stay in a forest for business. Saradar’s two daughters, Jwala (Mumtaz) and Reshma (Aruna Irani) are impressed with Raja who could defeat their best wrestler. Both are now in love with Raja and meets him separately. But Raja and Chandni loves each other.
Doctor secretly loves Chandni, but Nisha is in love with Doctor under whom she works. Doctor decides to get rid of Raja. First, he creates a situation in which Raja is forced to fight with monster man who is bent upon killing anyone who comes close to him because of his superpower artificially enhanced by the Doctor through injecting medicine. Raja overcomes the monster man. Next, Doctor uses Nisha to create a doubt on Raja in the mind of Chandni. Nisha takes Raja to Jwala’s room and Chandni is shocked to see Raja with Jwala. A disappointed Chandni leaves Raja and heads back to her hotel. After a long walk through the forest, she falls down unconscious. Doctor who was driving in his jeep picks Chandni and takes to his house and confines her in a room under a lock.
Raja is in search of Chandni in the forest when he meets Nisha who tells him the whereabouts of Chandni. But Doctor’s house is fortified. It is Nisha who gets Chandni and takes her to Raja. After listening to her tale, the fully armed tribals with Raja and Dilawar surround Doctor’s house to capture him. Doctor, anticipating this problem decides to revive the monster-man by injecting the medicine on him to boost his strength. However, this time, Raja is supported by Dilawar in defeating the monster-man. During the fight, Doctor abducts Chandni in his jeep. Raja follows Doctor on his horse. During the jeep-horse chase, Doctor is cornered and captured. He is brought to the tribal Sardar for the punishment.
As per the tribal tradition, Sardar orders the marriage of Raja and Chandni as he has rescued Chandni.
‘Rustam Kaun’ (1966) had six songs written by Yogesh Gaud (4) and Anjaan (2) which were set to music by Robin Banerjee. One song has been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 2nd song, ‘samaa ho nasheelaa ho aalam rangeelaa’ written by Yogesh Gaud. The song rendered by Suman Kalyanpur is picturised on Malika who dances in her hotel. Randhawa, Kamal Mehra and Hercules among others can be seen in the picturisation of the song.

Lyrics:
sama ho nasheela
ho aalam rangeela
sama ho nasheela
ho aalam rangeela
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
jawaan aarzoo ho
sanam rubroo ho
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
sama ho nasheela
kisi ki nigaahon ne yoon mujhko dekha
ke masti kaa saaghar fizaaon se chhalka
kisi ki nigaahon ne yoon mujhko dekha
ke masti kaa saaghar fizaaon se chhalka
kadam ladkhadaaye bin piye hee
nasha kya mujhe ho gaya halka halka aa
sama ho nasheela
ho aalam rangeela
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
sama ho nasheela
ye kis mod par aa gayi zindgaani
hai kya bekhudi jis mein ham kho gaye hain
ye kis mod par aa gayi zindgaani
hai kyaa bekhudi jis mein ham kho gaye hain
ye kya ham pe jaadoo ho gaya hai
ye kyun ajnabi khud se ham ho gaye hain
sama ho nasheela
ho aalam rangeela
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
sama ho nasheela
mere dil mein hai aaj ek aisee halchal
kayaamat hai yoon hasraton kaa machalna
mere dil mein hai aaj ek aisee halchal
kayaamat hai yoon hasraton kaa machalna
adaaon mein kya shokhiyaan hain
ke dushwaar ab ho gaya hai sambhalna aa
sama ho nasheela
ho aalam rangeela
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
to phir dil kaa khuda haafiz
sama ho nasheela
