Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 17
————————————————————————————–

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Malikaa-1956’.

One song from this movie was posted on the blog on 10.02.2012 … and that’s long time back. This movie completes its ten-year run on the blog with only one song posted from it.

I had not gone through this movie or its details and song in the past. It did that only when I saw the lyrics sent by Prakash ji with a song sung by none other than Geeta Dutt.
When I listened to today’s song, I liked it very much and I am presenting this song today.

This movie ‘Malikaa-1956’ is eligible under the ‘Blog Ten Years Challenge’ today. Let us go through the songs that were represented on the blog on this day ten years ago.

Following is the list of songs posted on 10.02.2012 in ascending order (i.e., the last song of the day appears at the bottom of this list below)

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Saawan ke baadalon unse ye jaa kaho Rattan(1944) All songs covered
Meri aankhon mein bas gaya koyi re Barsaat(1949) All songs covered
Zindagi ki kasam ho chuke unke ham Maalik(1958) 06 of 08 songs posted

Ye aansoo mere dil ki zubaan hai Hamraahi(1963) All songs covered
Raat hai nikhhri huyi Malikaa(1956) 01 out of 8 songs posted

From the above table we can see that out of seven movies represented on the blog on 10.02.2012 five movies ‘Rattan-1944’, ‘Barsaat-1949’, ‘Bahaadur-1953’, ‘Teesra Kaun-1965’ and ‘Hamraahi-1963’ have already attained ‘Yippeeee’ status on the blog.

Two movies viz. ‘Maalik-1958’ and ‘Malikaa-1956’ are not yet YIPPEEDon the blog and so these two movies are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today.

I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Malikaa-1956’.

Lyrics of this song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Here is a brief about this movie ‘Malikaa-1956’ as mentioned by our inhouse encyclopaedia Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukh while commenting on the first song ‘raat hai nikhhri huyi’ written by Shri. Sadanand Kamath.

Kamath ji,
MALIKAA was a 1956 film, produced by Thakur Ranbir Singh under the banner of S.B. Films and directed by Majnu-whose real name was Harold Lewis. This Majnu was acting as a comedian and is seen in many films along with I.S. Johar
e.g. Ek thi Ladki, Hum sab chor hai etc. He has directed many films.
The cast included Mahipal, Shakila, Chandrashekhar, Omprakash. sunder, Kumkum, Ramesh Thakur etc. The MD was Hansraj Behl, ably assisted by Inder Goyal. It was not a remake of any southern film, but an independent film made in Bombay.

The star-cast of this movie also included Yashodhara Katju, Ramavtar, Sudharshan Sethi, Kamaldeep and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.05.1956.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2011-2021) – Song No.29
——————————————————————-

This day 10 years ago, viz 4 july 2011 was a monday. That day saw the blog adding as many as seven songs to its tally. Here are the details of the seven songs that were covered on this day seven years ago:-

Blog post number Song Movie (Year) Remarks
4123 Raadhe Raani de daaro na bansari mori re Pooran Bhagat(1933) 6 songs covered so far out of 20
4124 Itne door hain huzoor Pyaar Ki Jeet(1948) All 8 songs covered. Movie YIPPEED
4125 Bewafa duniya ki hamne bewafaayi dekh li Grihasthhi(1948) 6 songs covered so far out of 8
4126 Wo to baans Bareilly se aayaa Dahej(1950) All 10 songs covered. Movie YIPPEED
4127 Dil par huaa aisaa jaadoo Mr and Mrs 55(1955) All 8 songs covered. Movie YIPPEED
4128 Maanjhi meri qismat ke Ham Hindustani(1960) 6 songs covered out of 9
4129 Koyi nahin hai phir bhi hai mujhko Patthar Ke sanam(1967) All 7 songs covered. Movie YIPPEED

One can see that four movies ho songs got covered ten years ago have since been YIPPEED. So only three movies, whose songs got covered that day are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today, ten year later.

“Ham Hindustani”(1960) is one of those movies. “Ham Hidustani”(1960) was produced by S Mukherjee and directed by Ram Mukherjee for Filmalay, Bombay. This patriotic movie, seeking to inspire Indians to make India great again through deeds and not by rhetoric, had Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh, Joy Mukherjee,Helen , Jageerdaar, Agha, Leela, Chitnis, Mubarak, Vijaya Chaudhary, Malika, Sheela Rao, Mirza Musharraf, Rav Avtaar, Moni, Chatterjee, Hari Shivdasani, Yogendra, Bob, B K Mukherjee, Sarita, Saibi, Sitaram, < Baby Nasreen, Caeser, Shyam Chatterjee etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it that were penned by five lyricists.

Six songs have been covered so far.

As Blog ten year challenge, here is another song from the movie. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Usha Khanna.

This movie has some well knon songs in it, but the song under discussion is not among them. I heard this song from the first time only today ! What a fantastic semi classical song sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song should be considered among her masterclass songs. Sadly this song has been forgotten.

The song is picturised as a Lord Krishn related stage dance song, as one can guess from the lyrics. A very young Asha Parekh plays Radha and lip syncs this song. Malika (sister of Mumtaz) plays Lord Krishn. Sheela Rao is also seen in the picturisation.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

4390 Post No. : 15756

Today, 25th July is the 24th anniversary of the passing away of GS Kohli, one of the most talented musician and music director in Hindi cinema’s Golden age.

Gursharan Singh Kohli was born in 1928. As a child and young man, he learnt to play dholak and many other musical instruments. He was just 24 years when he started working with the famous music director OP Nayar, as his assistant. He continued to be Nayar Sb’s assistant music director till the end of 1960s, even though he had started his own career as an independent music director with the film ‘Lambe Haath’ in 1960.

He went on to create wonderful music for films like ‘Shikari’ (1963), ‘Adventures of Robin Hood’ (1965) and ‘Namaste ji’ (also 1965). Despite scoring some of the most popular hit songs of the 1960s, his career remained confined to B and C grade cinema. His last film as an independent music director was ‘Jaalsaaz’ in 1969.

Today we present this enchanting cabaret song from the 1966 film ‘Do Matwaale’. The song is penned by Farooq Qaiser and is sung by Asha Bhosle. On screen, the song is performed by Helen, as a club dance song, in the inimitable way that only Helen can perform. Present in the scene also we can see the actress Malika, and two Sikh gentlemen, who actually are Randhawa and Madan Puri in disguise.

The lyrics of this song were sent in by Prakashchandra ji.

Another very enamoring dance number by Helen, who performs to the music of GS Kohli.

“Khilona”(1970) was directed by Chandar Vohra for Prasad Productions, Madras. the movie had Sanjeev Kumar,, Mumtaz, Jeetendra, Durga Khote, Bipin Gupta, Ramesh Deo, Chaand Usmaani, Shabnam, Malika, Jaishree, Shatrughan Singha, Jagdeep, Aruna Roy, Mridula, Jagnu Jain, Guddi, Master Satyajit etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth and final song from “Khilona”(1970) to appear in the blog. This song is a Hinglish song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a “making someone jealous” genre of light hearted song. I have not seen the movie, so I can only guess what the picturisation is all about. it appears to me that Jagdeep wants to amke his wife (played by Malika) jealous and for that he plays the ruse of singing this romantic son with Rosie (played by Shabnam) in a part. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell me if my guess is correct.

With this song, “Khilona”(1970) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Missing Films of 1960s – 24
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

To each his due – that is an adage that basically covers all the destinies, whether right or wrong, whether happy or sad. The struggle to definitively define whether success is destined, or whether it can be achieved through hard work, is a tough task indeed. Logic and arguments work both ways. Believers of destiny even go as far to propound that one will put hard work in life, because that is what the destiny says should be. And sometimes one tends to lean towards that argument – for there are numerous cases we know of people successful without having to put in too much hard work, or having displayed much capabilities. And of course, there are cases, also very numerous, where highly capable people are seen putting in lot of hard work most of their lives, but still, the coveted fruits of success elude them. And so, after witnessing so many such seemingly unfortunate lives, living through such seemingly unfair circumstances, one is eventually resigned to say – to each his due.

As a new entrant to the blog and to the field of blogging, an introduction is in order. A few mutual friends know me by reputation if not by virtue of meeting me in person . For example, Raja pai has had the misfortune of stumbling into me twice. Once in NYC and then again in Hyderabad. Atul has the dubious distinction of being a very good online friend of mine.
