‘Duniyaa Naachegee’ (1967) is available for viewing on one of the video sharing platforms. However, the audio and video qualities are not good enough to enjoy the viewing. The film is a romance-drama intertwined with a rough adaptation of the fairy tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. The story of the film is as under:

Ramdin Bagla (Kishore Kumar) stays in a rental house with his friend, Luther D’Souza (Mukri). There are creditors after them to clear pending rent, food bills etc. Ramdin loves Rekha (Kumkum), but he is afraid to tell her about his feelings as she is the daughter of his employer (S N Banerjee) who is a builder. But he still thinks that Rekha is also liking him. Luther loves Mary (Shammi) but he is afraid of her father because of a poor-rich issue.

Rekha’s birthday is due in a few days. She gives about 100 invitation cards to Ramdin to post them. On the suggestion of Luther, Ramdin decides to post only a few invitation cards as with so many persons from the rich families and friends attending the birthday party, Rekha may be tempted to discard him in favour of one of the rich invitees to her birthday party. On the other hand, with savings from postage, he can buy cloth and a bouquet of flowers. However, the money is snatched by their creditors.

With only one day left for Rekha’s birthday party, Ramdin and Luther spend time at a beach front in a depressed mood. At that time, Ramdin sees a trunk floating at the seashore. He finds in the trunk some vessels. Ramdin sells all the vessels to raise the money. except one beautifully crafted jug which he intends to give as his gift to Rekha on her birthday. At the birthday party, Ramdin openly confesses his love for Rekha which makes his employer furious as he has already decided to marry Rekha with Jagdish (Iftekhar) who is from a rich family. He throws out Ramdin from the party and also dismisses him from his company. He appoints Jagdish as the chief of the project

A humiliated Ramdin returns home. In the fury of anger, he destroys everything in the house including the jug which he was supposed to give to Rekha as a gift on her birthday. The jug gets broken from which a Jinn (Master Bhagwan) emerges. He tells Ramdin that from today onwards, he has become Ramdin’s slave. Since he has liberated him from confinement, he would meet all his demands. He tells Ramdin that many years back he was confined in the jug by the King as a punishment for loving his daughter Malika.

Since the arrival of Jinn, there has been a complete change in Ramdin’s life. He is no longer pestered by his creditors. He has been able to convince Mary’s father as a result, he has solemnised the marriage of Mary with Luther. However, he is not able to win the love of Rekha. Jinn tells Ramdin that first, he should himself make efforts to win Rekha. But Rekha does not respond positively to Ramdin’s efforts. Her friend, Geeta (Aruna Irani) convinces Rekha that she sees in Ramdin his genuine love for her. Rekha and Ramdin again become close to each other. At this juncture, Jinn having found her love Malika, takes leave of Ramdin and he is left to fend for himself.

In the meanwhile, Jagdish has virtually taken over the running of the company from Rekha’s father. His integrity towards Rekha’s father is suspect as there are instances of mismanagement of the company’s funds. A loyal employee of the Builder, Munshi reveals all these things to Rekha who, in turns, tells her father. However, Jagdish turns the table on Munshi whom he charges siphoning of funds to Ramdin whose standard of living has gone up overnight in spite of remaining unemployed.

A hospital constructed under the supervision of Jagdish collapses, killing a dozen patients. The Builder is arrested, and Jagdish is also under the threat of his arrest. So, he wants to destroy the documents relating to the hospital construction. But these documents are already with Ramdin, thanks to Munshi. To put pressure on Ramdin, Jagdish kidnaps Rekha. Ramdin promises to handover the documents to Jagdish. But instead of releasing Rekha, he also put Ramdin confined to a house. With the help of his friend, Luther, he runs away from the house and hides in a multi-storied under construction building. Jagdish with his henchman captures Ramdin and throws him from the top floor of the building. However, Jinn saves him.

In the court, the builder is presented before the judge. Ramdin appears in the court and reveals that the actual culprit for the hospital collapse is Jagdish who had used sub-standard material while constructing the hospital building. He presents all the documentary evidence presented through Jinn. Jagdish is arrested and Builder (Rekha’s father) is released. Ramdin and Rekha unite.

‘Duniyaa Naachegee’ (1967) had six songs written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan/Majrooh Sultanpuri (5) and Yogesh (1) which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa’ from the film which is rendered by Manna Dey and Asha Bhosle singing for Kishore Kumar and Kumkum, respectively. This is one more instance of Kishore Kumar lip syncing Manna Dey. This is the only song Yogesh Gaud wrote for Laxmikant-Pyarelal in his entire career.

The background behind this song in the film is that Jinn (Master Bhagwan) tells Ramdin (Kishore Kumar) that he has become slave to him, and he can meet any of his desires. Ramdin does not believe in Jinn and retorts to him that he is a bogus Jinn. At that time, Jinn transforms Ramdin from a poor man to a well-dressed person and brings his sweetheart, Rekha (Kumkum) on the stage to dance.

Song-Ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa (Duniyaa Naachegee)(1967) Singers-Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics:

ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa
ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa
tere gaalon ko
tere baalon ko
chhoo kar guzar jaataa
ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa
ke jo main hotee ghataa saawan kee
teree raahon mein
teree baahon mein aakar baras jaatee
ke jo main hotee ghataa saawan kee

teree khaatir aaoongee main
jannat ko bhee chhod ke
duniyaa ke dastoor ye sab
rakh doongee main tod ke
dil hai tere bas mein
kehtee hoon khaa kar kasmen
ke jo main
ke jo main hotee dhool zameen kee
ke jo main hotee dhool zameen kee
tere gaaon pe
tere paaon pe
aakar bikhar jaatee
ke jo main hotee ghata saawan kee

tu duniya mein husn kee
zindaa ik tasweer hai
tujhko jo main paa gayaa
to ye meree taqdeer hai
dil hai tere bas mein
kehtaa hoon khaa kar kasmen
ke jo main
ke jo main
ke jo main hotaa aanchal teraa
ke jo main hotaa aanchal teraa
sharmaaye se
tere saaye se
aakar lipat jaataa
ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa

deewaanee main ho gayee
jab se tere pyaar mein
sajtee hoon bahaar se
rahtee hoon gulzaar mein
dil hai tere bas mein
kehtee hoon khaa kar kasmen
ke jo main
ke jo main hotee tadaptee bijlee
ke jo main hotee tadaptee bijlee
teri yaadon pe
tere vaadon pe
aa kar chamak jaatee
ke jo main hotee ghataa saawan kee

ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa
tere gaalon ko
tere baalon ko chhoo kar guzar jaataa
ke jo main hotaa hawaa kaa jhonkaa
