#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————
(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#13)
Today I present another Bappi Lahiri composition which I came across recently during my search of songs sung by Bhupinder Singh. This song is from the movie “Do Ustaad-1982”.
This movie was produced and directed S.D. Narang for ‘New Oriental Pictures, Bombay’. It was passed by Censor Board on 19.02.1982. It had Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Danny Dengzongpa, Vikram, Nazneen, Nirupa Roy, supported by Jagdeep, Mukri, Kalpana Iyer, Jeevan, Narendra Nath, Sheetal, Jagdish Raj, Parveen Paul, Yusuf Khan, M. Rajan, Baby Gazala, Baby Pinky, Master Baboo, Master Rajesh, Master Nadeem, C.S. Dubey, Hercules, Punoo, Abhimanyu Sharma, Johny Whisky, Jugnu, Hameed, Manjeet, Sunil Dhawan, Goga Kapoor, and others. Shakti Kapoor, Neeta Mehta, Komila Virk, Bhagwan and S.D. Narang had a special appearance in this movie.
It is noted in the movie titles that the ‘original version of this movie is written by Khalid Narvi. Screenplay of this movie was written by Mahesh Shandilya. Additional dialogues of this movie were written by Tabish Sultanpuri. Editing of this movie was done by K. Nanda. Verma Malik had written the lyrics for the songs in this movie and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh and Usha Uthhup are the playback singers for this movie.
As the movie starts with the background of Himachal Valley (Shimla?) we have been told by narrator the following lines (I am unable to identify the voice) …
“zindagee ek anjaanaa safar hai
na jaane ye insaan ko kahaan se kahaan le jaaye”
So, the audience is now well prepared to travel with the story wherever it takes to them. 🙂
We have Roopa (Baby Pinky in childhood and Reena Roy as adult) and Suraj (Master Baboo (?) in childhood and Shatrughan Sinha as adult) who are childhood friends. Suraj is an orphan, and Roopa often share him food which here mother cook for her. Once when Roopa is away with Suraj and gets late, her mother Lakshmi (Neeta Mehta) steps out to look for her. But Thakur Ranbir (Narendranath) who is holidaying in Shimla, and already drunk and looking for a woman to quench his lust tries to molest Lakshmi. However, in the process Lakshmi kills herself with his pistol to save her honor. Dharamdas (Jeevan) is the trusted lieutenant of Thakur Ranbir who reaches the spot and saves Thakur. When Lakshmi’s friend Fatima Bibi (Nirupa Roy) and other villagers are mourning the death of Lakshmi, Dharamdas took Roopa in his custody telling the villagers that since Lakshmi was his employee he will take care of her daughter. But, Dharamdas sell Roopa to Munnibai (Parveen Paul) (later Roopa grows up as Chandni Bai.) When Munnibai is taking Roopa in her car Suraj tries to save her from being taken forcefully, but Dharamdas beats Suraj and throws him in the valley of snow. Suraj is found lying in snow by Fatima Bibi and she took him to her home. Dharamdas gets annoyed of Fatima Bi helping Suraj and he tries to convince Fatima Bi to throw him out. But in turn, Fatima Bi threatens Dharamdas that she will lodge a police complaint about the unnatural death of Lakshmi and also about the many girls missing from the village earlier. Fatima Bibi has a son Munna (actor Vikram in adult role). As Suraj and Munna are out to bring Fatima Bi’s ‘kangan’ from the jeweler, Dharamdas kidnaps Munna and board a train. Suraj chases him but could not reach them, and instead he too boards the train and all of them lands in Bombay.
From here onwards the story is about Suraj and Roopa taking revenge on the exploiters and wrong –doers. There is one more character in the movie i.e. Daaku Baadal Singh (played by Danny Denzongpa) who is also a rebel against the ‘feudalism’ in the society and those who treat women badly and do not respect them. Once he saves Munna’s/Aslam’s wife (Nazneen) from a goon from his own gang as he tries to molest her. Daaku Baadal Singh treats Aslam’s wife as his sister so hereafter he helps her out whenever Aslam gets in trouble.
How the childhood friends Roopa and Suraj get united? Does Fatima Bi re-unite with her son Munna? What happens to Daaku Baadal Sing? What Dharamdas and Thakur Ranbir Singh do together in Bombay? … is all that we to find by watching this movie. And there is a twist because of which Suraj and Baadal confronts each other? How Suraj and Munna get united? And how all them get united together? … is what the story of this movie.
The today’s song happens when years later Suraj finds Roopa at the kothhaa of Munnibai and rescues her from there. The two childhoods lovers are celebrating their re-union and thus this song. Singers are Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupinder Singh and on screen it is the beautiful Reena Roy and Shatrughan Sinha lip-syncing in their voices. Lyrics are by Verma Malik and this melodious duet song is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Lyrics
kitney hi saalon se main
tere khayaalon se main
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
o o o
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
aaj tu kareeb hai
jaagaa naseeb hai
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
ho o o o
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
waqt meharbaan hai
raat bhee jawaan hai
aur khubsoorat ghadee
ee ee haan
ab kyun ye dooriyaan
kaisee majbooriyaan
main tere saamne khadee ee ee
aaj ang ang apnaa
har rang dhhang apnaa
kar doongee tujhpe
main nisaar
ho o o
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
kitney hi saalon se main
tere khayaalon se main
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
ho o o
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
gorey rukhsaar ye
uspe nikhaar ye
kar gaye hain ae
jaadoo oo ho o o
dekh ke shabaab ko
khilte gulaab ko
dil pe naheen kaaboo oo oo
husn teraa taubaa taubaa
kaise sabar hogaa
jalwe tere beshumaar
ho o o
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
aaj tu kareeb hai
jaagaa naseeb hai
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
ho o o o
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
kal thhe jo sapney
aaj huye apney
zindagee mein aayee ee bahaar
wo mulaaqaat hai ye
aaj wo raat hai ye
jiskaa mujhe thhaa intezaar
har subah shaam le kar
teraa hee naam le kar
bachpan diyaa hai guzaar
ho o o o
dil mein samaa jaa ek baar
kitney hi saalon se main
tere khayaalon se main
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
ho o o
kartee rahee hoon pyaar
aaj tu kareeb hai
jaagaa naseeb hai
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
ho o o o
dil mein samaa jaa
ek baar
