‘Veer Bhimsen’ (1964) was produced and directed by Chandrakant. The cast included Dara Singh, Anita Guha, Mumtaz, Mahipal, Sumitra Devi, Shahu Modak, Randhawa, Ramayan Tiwari, B M Vyas, Ratnamala, Ameerbai Karnataki, Ruma Devi, Tuntun, Bhagwan Sinha, Raj Kishore, Tiger Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh etc. Obviously, it is a mythological film connected with the epic of Mahabharat from the viewpoint of Bhimsen.

In Mahabharat, Bhimsen, the second among the five Pandav brothers, has been depicted as a man with extra-ordinary power, strength, unsatiable appetite and the devotion to his family. He is very protective of Draupadi. Those who insulted her, Bhimsen takes deadly revenge against them. At the same time, he follows the sound sense of justice towards those who are exploited. Although he remained under the shadow of his younger brother, Arjun, Bhimsen had an important role in Kurukshetra war in which he defeated Duryodhana and Dushasana in the last day of the war. There are many interesting episodes on the life of Bhimsen including those during the Kurukshetra war. The story of the film is based on some of such episodes in the epic of Mahabharat.

The story of the film in some detail is as under:

The film begins with a dual between Duryodhana (Randhawa) and Bhimsen(Dara Singh) in an arena to show their skill in mace combat in front of the family members of Kauravas and Pandavas. Thereafter, the dual turns into a free-style wrestling in which Duryodhana is defeated by Bhimsen and he is declared the winner. This set the tone of rivalry between the two.

Kunti (Ratnamala), the mother of Pandavas with her five Pandavas have gone to meet Lord Krishna (Shahu Modak) to complain about the unfavourable distribution of the Kingdom of Hastinapur between Kauravas and Pandavas. While Bhimsen and Arjun (Amarnath) take the aggressive stance of fighting for their right, Lord Krishna suggests negotiation at the first instance. On the Kauravas side, Duryodhana and Dushasana meets their maternal uncle, Shakuni to work out the strategies against Pandavas in case, Lord Krishna is able to convince Dhritarashtra to give the thrown of Hastinapur to Yudhisthira. Shakuni suggests Duryodhana to invite Pandavas for lunch to make a showcase of brotherhood. But in reality, it would be used to get rid of the most powerful of Pandavas, Bhimsen.

During the lunch, Duryodhana serves sweets laced with addictive to Bhimsen which makes him to go into the deep sleep. He is tied and thrown in a river to die. However, when he awakes, he finds himself in Naaglok (World of Serpents). The chief of Naaglok makes him drink five different pots of liquid to make him the strongest man so that in physical strength, no one can defeat him on the earth. He is sent back to the earth.

After finding Bhimsen alive, under advice from Shakuni, Duryodhana makes one more attempt on Pandavas by inviting them to stay in a newly created palace, Lakshagriha with the intention of burning them alive. However, with the timely warning by their uncle, Vidur, Pandav brothers escape through an underground tunnel. After this incidence, Bhimsen is so much annoyed with Duryodhana that he proposes to visit Hastinapur to kill Duryodhana. However, Kunti restrains him by saying that this is not the time to use ‘shakti’(strength) but to use ‘yukti’ (trick) to tackle Kauravas.

Pandav brothers along with Kunti decides to be away from Hastinapur for some time due to the hostile attitudes of the Kauravas. During this period, King Drupad has arranged swayamvara of his daughter Draupadi (Sumitra Devi). The Pandav brothers attend the swayamvara in disguise in which Arjuna wins and gets married to Draupadi. One day, Bhimsen goes to the shore of a river to fetch water for the family when he meets Hidimbi (Mumtaz) who gets attracted to Bhimsen. However, her brother, Hidimba challenges Bhimsen during which he defeats him. Narada appears on the scene and reveals that it is the desire of Lord Narayana that Bhimsen weds Hidimbi as the son born out of them will have a significant role in Pandavas favour. Kunti agrees for the marriage.

There are many episodes in the film build around Bhimsen, like killing of demon Bakasura, king Jarasandha, killing of Kichaka, his meeting with Lord Hanuman etc. After Pandavas return to Hastinapur, in the game of dice, Pandavas are defeated and are exiled in the forest for 12 years. During the period of exile, there are episodes concerning Bhimsen.

After the period of exile gets over, Lord Krishna tries his hard to convince Dhritarashtra to give a part of Hastinapur kingdom to Pandavas. However, Duryodhana flatly refuses to give to Pandavas even a plot of land for their own stay. So, the war between Kauravas and Pandavas becomes inevitable. The Kurukshetra war starts with Lord Krishna on Pandavas side.

By 12th day of the war, Kauravas have suffered heavy casualties. Bhishma is killed in the earlier day’s war. Dronacharya devices a Chakra formation plan of war for the next day to keep Arjuna busy so that Kauravas can capture Yudhister. Pandavas are aghast with Chakra formation plan as only Arjuna and Lord Krishna know how to penetrate and exit from chakra formation. But they are needed to protect Yudhister. While Pandavas are discussing as to who, among them, can be sent to penetrate chakra formation, at that time, Abhimanyu (Mahipal) offers to penetrate Chakra formation as he knows the six out of seven steps of chakra formation. Bhimsen promises Abhimanyu that he would come to support him when he needs to exit from the chakra formation.

While Abhimanyu inflicts some important casualties on Kauravas, he gets surrounded by many Kauravas. Bhimsen is held somewhere in the battle ground so that he cannot come to rescue Abhimanyu. As a result, after fighting bravely, Abhimanyu gets killed. After the funeral, Pandavas have meeting with Lord Krishna who reminds Bhimsen his vows to kill Dushasana and Duryodhana for outraging the modesty of Draupadi. He tells him to fulfil his vows when the war resumes the next day. The film ends with dual of Bhimsen, separetely with Dushasana and Duryodhana during which both are killed by Bhimsen.

‘Veer Bhimsen’ (1964) had ten songs written by Kavi Pradeep which are set to music by C Ramchandra. Two songs have been covered on the Blog, the second song being covered on April 18, 2010. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘aayee aaj vidaa kee belaa’ rendered by Asha Bhosle as a background song when Abhimanyu gets ready to join the war to break the chakra formation of Kauravas Army. In the picturisation, Ratnamala as Kunti, Sumitra Devi as Draupadi, Dara Singh as Bhimsen, Anita Guha as Uttara among others can be seen. Interestingly, in the audio clip, Asha Bhosle sings while aalaaps are sung by chorus but the film soundtrack has only Asha Bhosle’s voice.

The song has poignant lyrics which is well supplemented by C Ramchandra’s melodious musical composition.
