# Singer Yesudas’s Birth Anniversary #
————————————————————

Today 10th January 2025 is the eighty-fifth birthday of Singer Yesudas (born on 10.01.1940). We will celebrate his occasion by covering a few songs sung by him. I have already presented one song from the 1980 movie ‘Maan Abhimaan’. In this post, I am presenting a song from the ‘1984’ movie ‘Ek Nayee Pahelee’. This is another song of Yesudas which I was longing to share here. All these years I had never watched this movie ‘Ek Nayee Pahelee’ and I watched it now on the new year day. However, I was aware of this song from this movie as it was played on radio for the promotion of this movie when it was being released in 1984.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 27.02.1984. So, it must be around the summer of ‘1984’ when it was released in theatres around the place I was staying then. Because I have these memories of listening this song on radio of that summer season while sleeping out in the courtyard.

‘Ek Nayee Pahelee’ was Directed by K. Balachander for P.S.R. Pictures. It was produced by P. Subba Rao. It has Raaj Kumar, Hemal Malini, Kamal Haasan, Padmini Kolhapure, Suresh Oberoi, and Mehmood. They are supported by Dubey, Rajkishore, Anand, N.S. Bedi, Asha Sachdev, Chitra, Rajee, and others. Rakesh Bedi and Johny Lever had a guest appearance in this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Inder Raj Anand. N.S. Bedi was the dialogues coach for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by N.R. Kittoo. K. Balachander the director of this movie also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie. Singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, K.J. Yesudas, S. P. Balasubramaniyam, Anuradha Paudwal, and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist for all the six songs this movie has. Music for this movie is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. And I can say that this album will always feature among their best compositions for Hindi movies.

‘Ek Nayee Pahelee-1984’ was the remake of the movie ‘Apoorva Raagaangal-1975’ which was also written and directed by K. Balachander. It is said that this movie was inspired by a story or a ‘riddle’ (that is it always) in ‘Vetaal Pachcheesee’ (or ‘Vetaal Panchvimshati’ where the ‘ghost’ tells a story to the King Vikram and seeks answers. The movie ‘Apoorva Raagaangal-1975’ launched actor Rajinikanth who had acted in a short film before that. Actor Kamal Haasan played the same character in the Hindi remake of the movie which he played in the original Tamil version of this movie. Rajinikanth had played the role in the Tamil movie which Suresh Oberoi played in the Hindi remake of this movie.

Before we read about the story of this movie in brief, we have to answer this ‘pahelee’ that Kajree (Padmini Kolhapure) keeps asking Upendranath (Raaj Kumar) in between as the story progresses on screen. Both then didn’t know that they will soon be finding themselves in the ‘characters’ of the same riddle.

“Meraa baap jiskaa sasur hai
uskee bahu kaa baap
mere bete kaa sasur hai
to meraa us’se kya rishtaa huaa ??

Sandeep (Kamal Haasan) is a rebellious son of a wealthy widower Upendranath (Raaj Kumar). Sandeep is repeatedly taking law in his hands with his few followers to settle scores with whoever they find doing illegal things in society or not following the ‘general civic sense’ in society (😊). Once after such incidence when police is after him and police follows him to his home, his ‘principle driven father’ handed overs him to the police. So, after coming out from jail Sandeep didn’t go to home and instead is wandering on roads where he is beaten and thrown up by goons on the road after altercation about splashing the mud by their speeding car on Sandeep. Singer Bhairavi (Hema Malini) who his passing from there and see him lying in injured saves him and bring to him to her home. She asks him to stay there still he gets 100% fit to fight again. But simultaneously Sandeep falls in love with her …

Bhairavi has an illegitimate daughter Kajree (Padmini Kolhapure) from her lover Avinash (Suresh Oberoi) who have abandoned them and left somewhere. Kajree lefts her mother when she comes to know about this reality through their family friend Dr Suri (Mehmood doing a good performance both as a doctor and his drunken lookalike brother, who he disguises himself to enjoy drinking daily after doing a noble service of a doctor). After leaving home Kajree takes up petty job of a salesgirl and happens to meet Upendranath during watching a comedy show in a theatre. And soon they become friends, and Upendranath suggests that she can leave at his house as after his son left him, he is alone there. Going forward he tries to look for a suitable match for Kajree to get her married. But Kajree has developed a liking for Upendranath himself, and she rejects the other proposals. And when she speak her mind to Upendranath, he gets shocked as he had never thought of her like that.

Meanwhile Bhairavi’s ex-lover is back, and he tries to meet her which Sandeep prevents. What happens next and how the story unfolds is what readers would love to watch on screen.

I must say that this movie is a good to watch movie and the performances of all are good. Raaj Kumar’s dialogues are very good and given his style and his command over the language they are highly enjoyable to watch.

Coming to the situation of the song, Upendra (Raj Kumar) finally accepts Kajree’s love for him, and they are suppose to get married. Upendra reading across a magazine (shown ‘Mayapuri’ on screen) finds an article with photos of both Bhairavi and Kajree and about their relationship. He decides to travel to meet Bhairavi. On reaching Bhairavi’s home, the maid there welcomes him and ask him to wait. Bhairavi and Sandeep are upstairs and getting ready for some function. Before they can come downstairs where Upendra is waiting, Upendra sees a photo-frame of both Bhairavi and son and is surprised. He asks the maid if she knows who this guy is. She says yes and when he asks more about them, she tells him that they are soon going to get married. That is exactly when Upendra gets the first taste of the ‘quiz’ taking place in his real life or in the real life of all the four characters including his son, Kajree and him. He gets drunk and starts singing this song.

Enjoy this song sung by Yesudas, his only one in this movie. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. With this song the movie ‘Ek Nayee Pahelee-1984’ makes its debut of the blog today.

Lyrics

zindagee ke
is safar kee
kaunsee
manzil hai ye ae ae ae ae
zindagee ke
is safar kee
kaunsee
manzil hai ye ae ae ae ae
doobtaa main
jaa rahaa hoon
jispe wo
saahil hai ye ae ae ae ae
zindagee ke
is safar kee
kaunsee
manzil hai ye ae ae ae ae

yaad karne
bhoolne kee
baat bhee koi naheen
yaad karne
bhoolne kee
baat bhee koi naheen
main akelaa bhee naheen
aur
saath bhee koyee naheen
har taraf tanhaayiyaan hai
naam kee mehfil hai ye ae ae ae ae
zindagee ke
is safar kee
kaunsee
manzil hai ye ae ae ae
doobtaa main
jaa rahaa hoon
jispe wo
saahil hai ye ae ae ae

ik taraf dil
ik taraf main
gham kee ye parchhaayiyaan
ik taraf dil
ik taraf main
gham kee ye parchhaayiyaan
saath dil kaa doon
to hotee
hai badee ruswaayiyaan
faisle kaa waqt hai
par faislaa mushqil hai ye ae ae ae
zindagee ke
is safar kee

jispe wo

is safar kee
kaunsee
manzil hai ye ae ae ae

Avinash Ji

Thanks for the post.

I couldnt help writing my comments. I found this movie plot, absurd. For me this is a typical case all style and glitter and no substance. Sorry for being a devil’s advocate :))

thank you Avinashji for this post on the Birthday of the legend Yesudas

I had liked the songs of the Tamil version of this film when I saw it during Doordarshan days. Then I saw this version on some satellite channel. Again only liked the songs & of course Hema Malini and Padmini’s looks & acting. The story was absurd
