#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

#Taraanaa-1979#
——————————

“Taraanaa-1979” was a movie from Rajshri Productions. The production house of Rajshri’s are known for ‘clean, musical, family entertainer’ movies. Their movies always bear shots of picturesque locations too.

Taraanaa’ is a movie of the same genre that Rajshree Productions were known for. I had not watched this movie in those years when it was released. However, I was familiar with its songs that had become popular during its time. The most popular song from this movie was ‘Sultana Sultana meraa naam hai Sultana’. It featured in the annual Binaca Geetmala of 1980 in fifteenth position. Another song from this movie ‘ham tum dono saath mein bheeg jaayenge barsaat mein’ was also frequently heard. But the song that I associated with this movie was the song ‘gunche lage hain kahne’ which I presented here in July last year when I watched this movie on a video sharing platform.

‘Taraana-1979’ was directed by Deepak Bahri for ‘Chanda Pictures’. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya. The cast of this movie included Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Urmila Bhatt, Jayshree T., Sharat Saxena, and Om Shivpuri. They were supported by Yunus Parvez, Janki Das, Sundar, Bhagwan, Shakeel, Satyabhan Sinha, Naresh, Pardesi, Master Sandeep, Shobha Khote, Mala Jaggi, Uma Khosla, and Jagdeep. The story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Khalid & Narvi. Editing of this film was done by Mukhtar Ahmed. Lyricist Ravindra Rawal and Tilakraj Thapar penned six songs each for this movie. Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Jagjit Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Chetan and Varsha Bhonsle were the singers. Music for this movie was composed by Raamlaxman.

“Taraanaa-1979” is a nice musical love story to watch. It also has sub-plots of ‘wealthy and poor’ conflict, and a ‘lost and found’ story to it. Music plays its role in the progression of the story. Out of the twelve songs it seems that two songs were excluded from the movie on screen. At least they are not available on the movie version available on internet. Knowledgeable readers who must have watched the original version of this movie when it was released in theatres, would be able to throw more light on this.

Today I am presenting the sixth song from this movie, and I guess that this song must have been excluded from the movie as only audio of this song is available. However, there is a situation in the movie where this song could have been plotted in the story. There is a sequence of ‘Janmashtami’ festival in the movie. When the hero of the movie Shyam (Mithoon Chakravarty) sees that preparations of celebration are going in house he asks his mother (Urmila Bhatt) about the occasion. She tells her that it is ‘Janmashtami’ today. When he asks her about the team performing music, she tells him about their regular musical party from Ram Nagar. There Shyam suggests about this girl Raani/Radha (Ranjeeta) from the ‘gypsies’ who are camping on their land. When Shaym is telling his mother about this girl she easily guesses what is going on between them. She happily agrees to his suggestion and allows him to invite Raani for the occasion. When Raani meets Savitri Devi (Urmila Bhatt) she gifts her a ‘haar’ as usually happens when a son takes her would be bride to meet his mother. 😊

I guess that the song under discussion was planned at this juncture in the movie. The song got recorded but it was either not picturised or excluded in the final version of this movie. The song is sung by Aarti Mukherjee. Lyrics are by Ravinder Raval and music is composed by Raamlaxman.

Let us listen to this song now…
