Today’s song is from the Mythological film Shiv Kanya-1954.
Atulites know very well that for the last so many years, I have been posting my “Good Morning” messages on our WA group. Along with the GM message, I also post photos and pictures of various Gods and Mythological events, so that our readers get acquainted and their day should start with the auspicious darshan of our Gods and Goddesses. Some time back I posted a picture of the entire family of Shiv ji, which showed Shankar, Parvati, Ganesh, Kartikeya and their daughter Mansa Devi. The same was posted on Fb and my other 10+ groups.
That day, I was flooded with queries from the group members enquiring about the girl in the photo- whether she was Shiva’s daughter. Some friends told me that they never knew Ganesh ji had a sister either ! When I was a very young kid, and saw her picture. I too was perplexed because I was unaware that Shankar-Parvati had a daughter. That day my father explained to me about Mansa Devi. Later I read about her.
I have many religious books. One book-“Hindu daivat in India” by Shrinivas Potdar says….
” Manasa Devi is also known as the snake Goddess who is worshipped mainly in Bengal and other North-Eastern states of India. It is believed that Goddess Manasa is the one who controls all the snakes on Earth and a snake bite can be cured by worshipping Her. People also worship Goddess Manasa for fertility and prosperity. According to the legends Goddess Manasa is the daughter of Lord Shiva. However some scriptures suggest that She was the daughter of Sage Kashyapa and is distantly related to Shiva. She is the sister of Vasuki and wife to Sage Jaratkaru. Due to the confusion in Her parentage, Goddess Manasa has been denied the position which other deities enjoy. Hence, She is an extremely furious Goddess for those who refuse to worship Her while extremely kind to those who worship Her with devotion. ”
Another book-Hindu Mythology – “Gods and goddesses” by Acharya Shyam Purohit says….
” Ma Manasa Devi, the snake goddess, is worshipped by Hindus, mainly for the prevention and cure of snakebites and infectious diseases like smallpox and chickenpox as well as for prosperity and fertility. She stands for both ‘destruction’ and ‘regeneration’, almost akin to a snake shedding its skin and being reborn.
The idol of the goddess is depicted as a graceful lady with her body, adorned with snakes and sitting on a lotus or standing on a snake, under a hooded canopy of seven cobras. She is often seen as ‘the one-eyed goddess’, and sometimes portrayed with her son Astika on her lap.
Also known as ‘Nagini,’ the female serpentine avatar or ‘Vishahara,’ the goddess who annihilates poison, Manasa, in the Hindu mythology, is believed to be the daughter of sage Kasyapa and Kadru, the sister of the serpent-king Sesha. She is the sister of Vasuki, king of Nagas and wife of sage Jagatkaru.
A simplified version of the myth regards Manasa as the daughter of Lord Shiva. Legends have it that she was rejected by her father Shiva and husband Jagatkaru, and hated by her stepmother, Chandi, who scooped out one of Manasa’s eyes. So, she appears to be foul-tempered, and benevolent only towards her devotees.
Manasa, due to her mixed parentage, is denied full godhood. Ancient Hindu legends in the Puranas, narrate the story of the birth of this powerful serpentine goddess. Sage Kashyapa created goddess Manasa from his ‘mana,’ or mind, so she could control the reptiles that were creating havoc on earth and Lord Brahma made her the presiding deity of snakes. It is believed that Lord Krishna granted her divine status and she established herself in the pantheon of gods.
During the monsoon season, Goddess Manasa is worshiped, mainly in the eastern Indian states of Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, and Orissa, throughout the months of June, July and August (Ashar – Shravan), a time when the snakes leave their nesting ground and come out into the open and become active. In Bangladesh, the Manasa and Ashtanaag Puja is a month-long affair spanning July and August. Devotees pay obeisance to goddess Manasa and perform various ‘pujas’ or rituals to appease her. Special ‘murtis’ or statues of the goddess are sculpted, various sacrifices made, and prayers chanted. In some places, worshippers are seen to pierce their bodies, poisonous snakes are displayed on the altar, and live shows depicting the life and legends of Manasa Devi are performed. “
When one talks of Lord Shiva, one is thinking about Mahadev, Parvati, Kartikeya and Ganesha. Very few people know about MANASA DEVI, who is supposed to be the daughter of Mahadev. Manasa Devi is quite a well known name of a Deity who is worshipped in Bengal and North East part of India.
Mangal kavyas, written in Bangla during the 13th and 18th centuries, describes the origin of Mansa Devi. There is a mention of Manasa Devi in Sama Veda also. ‘Devi Bhagavatam’ from the south describes many aspects of Manasa Devi. She has 12 names- Manasa devi, Karupriya, Jagadgauri, Sidha yogini, Vaishnavi, Shaivi, Naageshwari, Jaratkarupriya, Naag Bhagini, Astikmata, Vish hari and Maha jnanayuta.
In Bengal and North East, it is believed that Manasa Devi is the sister of Vasuki, the King of Naagas, wife of sage Jaratkaru and mother of Agasti, who saved all Naagas from King Janamejaya’s Sarpa-Yadnya.
She is worshipped in the form of a Cactus and always in the open, lest snakes invade the house.
Manasa Devi is a symbol of Bad temper and unhappiness due to rejection of Father (Shiva) and hatred of step mother Chandi. In some Puranas, like Shiv Puran, she is also called the daughter of sage Kashap and mata kadru.
In Greek mythology also there is a mention of a Goddess Ma Na Sa devi.
There is a huge Manasa Devi Temple in Haridwar and one is in Panchkula, near Chandigarh, besides the Eastern India states.
Film Shiv kanya-1954 was produced by Ravjibhai Patel and Sharad Desai (son of director Dhirubhai Desai) for their banner Chandrakala Pictures, Bombay, It was directed by Dhirubhai Desai, a veteran of such films. The music was composed by Manna Dey and the Cast was Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Lalita Pawar, Shakuntala, Anjali Devi, Indira Bansal and many others in smaller roles. For 8 songs by Lata, Asha and Manna Dey, there were 3 Lyricists- Bharat Vyas (5 songs), Ramesh Gupta (2 songs) and today’s song by Saraswati kumar Deepak (1 song). As per the trend of those times, the film was made partially in colour.
In the decade of the 50’s, the name of Nirupa Roy was synonymous with Mythological films. She did 50 Mythological films in the roles of various Goddesses. Her speciality was Parvati mata.
Nirupa Roy – Real name…Kokila Balsara (4-1-1931 to 13-10-2004) was an enigma of Hindi Cinema. An ordinary lower middle class housewife turned into an actress due to a need to survive. Funny thing was that it was her husband – Kishore Chandra Balsara – who had visited the studio to get a job as an actor and the studio selected his wife instead ! Her name was changed to Nirupa Roy. Without getting any film roles, her husband also changed his name to Kamal Roy ! Nirupa Roy who acted in over 250 movies has been variously branded as a Goddess of Mythological films, a suffering wife of a poor farmer, a troubled housewife of social films, an acclaimed quintessential mother of Bollywood and even a Stunt film actress !
She has been a Heroine in 110 films ( out of a total of 280 films ), a mother in over 50 films, has been a Goddess in 50 Mythological films, a suffering wife in over 30 films and a Stunt girl in about 10 films. She sang Bhajans, romantic songs, Comedy songs, qawalis, sad songs and peasant folk songs on the screen.
Trilok Kapoor was very famous for his portrayal of Shiv ji in Mythological films, in which he paired with Nirupa Roy as his consort-Parvati. He did 7 films in a row for this role and in all those films Nirupa Roy was Parvati. (However, no one could ever beat the divine pair of Ram and Seeta enacted by Shobhana Samarth and Prem Adib in Ram Rajya-1943).
It was rumoured that Trilok Kapoor wore a real snake around his neck during shootings. In the shooting of Har Har Mahadev-1950, Nirupa Roy was scared of the real snake and she could not do any scene with Trilok ji. Finally, he had to remove the real snake and wear an artificial snake for this shooting.
She changed her Heros like “Badalate hue saathi”. She did 18 films with Trilok Kapoor ( 50-65), 12 films with Balraj Sahni ( 53-72), 16 films with P.Jairaj ( 53-78), and maximum – 21 films with Ashok Kumar ( 56-89). She was Amitabh’s mother in 12 films and a stunt Girl in 8 films. She even wrote a popular film song for the film Samrat Chandragupta-58 ( Mujhe dekh chand sharmaye – Lata).
Let us now enjoy this 71 year old video song, sung by Asha Bhosle and chorus….
