Hullo Atuldom
22nd January is the birth anniversary of a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, editor and actor, who is known for acclaimed films such as Guide (1965), Teesri Manzil (1966), Jewel Thief (1967) and Johny Mera Naam (1970). He came from a family of filmmakers- producers, editors and actors. He made most of his films under the in-house banner Navketan Films and was part of the Anand Family. He was Vijay Anand a.k.a. Goldie Anand- younger brother of Chetan & Dev Anand. His sister Sheel Kanta Kapur is the mother of actor-director Shekhar Kapur and part-time actress Sohaila Kapur.
He had acted in a about 11 films and was writer for three films (the Tamil version of “Johnny Mera Naam’- “Raja” credits Vijay Anand as the writer) but is primarily remembered as a director. His films had a unique style with regards to camera work; specially the song picturisations:- can we forget “honthon pe aisi baat”, “aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai”, “o haseena zulfonwali”, “Mile Mile Do Badan, Khile Khile Do Chaman” or “pal bhar ke liye koi mujhe pyar karde”? I am sure every Hindi film music lover will have her/ his own favourite song which had Goldie Anand at the helm.
Vijay Anand debuted as an actor with “Agra Road” in 1957. The same year saw him debut as director of “Nau do Gyarah” (don’t know which came first!!)
Many of the films that he produced or wrote had an underlying thriller element in addition to wonderful/ beautiful locales, romantic & devotional songs (the best song with romance & devotion in the same breath being “Apni To Har Aah Ek Toofan Hai”).
His memorable roles as actor were in “Haqeeqat”, “Kala Bazaar”, “Kora Kaagaz”, “Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki” etc. In 1974, he was seen in a song-less thriller film “Chor Chor” with Leena Chandavarkar as his heroine. He acted opposite Rekha in two films “Double Cross” (1972) & “Ghunghroo Ki Awaaz” (1981).
“Ghunghroo ki Awaaz” was produced by Vijay Anand & directed by the Ramsay Brothers. It had Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Agha, Dheeraj Kumar, Leela Mishra, Iftekhar, Padma Khanna, Pinchoo Kapoor, & Harindranath Chattopadhyay playing important supporting characters. The songs were composed by R. D. Burman with Basu- Manohari- Maruti Rao as his assistants. The playback singers used were Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar. I was surprised to note that Vijay Anand was the lyricist. Of the five songs in the film, the following two are on the blog
| Song | Date of post |
|---|---|
| Ankhiyon ka kajra haathhon ka gajra kiske liye | 22 January 2015 |
| Tere ghunghroo ki aawaaz | 22 January 2020 |
As can be seen from the above, “Ghungroo Ki Awaaz” has been appearing on the blog every five years, on this date. That means, today is the correct date. Though I didn’t choose the song or the film based on this finding; I chose it for the way the song has been filmed. Initially, I thought it was a ghost (bhootiya) song, but realized that was not the case when the song ended & the girl turned around and we see Rekha. On looking up for the story-line of the film I found that it was loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”(1958).
On re-reading the post by Sudhirji for the song “tere ghunghroo ki awaaz” I realized that Goldie (Vijay Anand) had appeared in ‘Joru Ka Bhai’ in 1955. Also That post by Sudhurji gives us an in-depth knowledge about Vijay Anand. He would have turned 91 today.
Song-Rotee rotee raina rotey rotey naina (Ghunghroo Ki Aawaaz)(1981) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Vijay Anand, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
rotee rotee raina aa aa
rotey rotey ae naina

rotey rotey naina
rotee rotee raina
rotey rotey naina
rotey rotey thhake donon chanda muskuraaye

kya sunaayen aen aen aen
auron kee to
baaten chhodo
apnon se dhokha khaayen
zindagee kee
bewafaayee
kee kahaanee
kya sunaayen aen aen aen
auron kee to
baaten chhodo
apnon se dhokha khaayen
khila khila phool hai
par kaanton se bhara

rotee rotee raina
rotey rotey naina
ho o
rotey rotey thhake donon chanda muskuraye
raaginee ho
chhote se is ghunghroo mein qaidi jaise ae ae
apne hee
sapnon ke
ghere mein ho qaidi vaise
raaginee ho
chhote se is ghunghroo mein qaidi jaise ae ae
apne hee
sapnon ke
ghere mein ho qaidi vaise
sapnon ke raaja aa
kholo pinjra
ho o
rotee rotee raina
rotey rotey naina
rotey rotey thhake donon chanda muskuraaye
kehta hai
dil mera
raahee koyee
aayega aa aa
ujdi hai
nagree ye
khushiyaan vo laayega
kehta hai
dil mera
raahee koyee
aayega aa aa
ujdi hai
nagree ye
khushiyaan vo layega
zara see aasha hai
niraasha bhee hai zara
ho o
rotee rotee raina
rote rote naina
ho o
rotey rotey thhake donon chanda muskuraaye
rotey rotey raina aa aa
