“Mission Kashmir” is a 2000 (27th October 2000) released action thriller film directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Original story was by Vidhu Vinod Chopra & Vikram Chandra; who were also the screenplay writers along with Abhijat Joshi & Suketu Mehta. Rahat Indori & Sameer were the lyricists for songs that were composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Shankar Mahadevan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod, Anuradha Paudwal, Jaspinder Narula, Sunidhi Chauhan & Mahalakshmi Iyer were the singers used in the 6 songs.
The film stars Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan, Jackie Shroff, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Pururava Pandit (son of yesteryear actor Rajkumar who was known in films as Puru Rajkumar). Heena Biswas & Mohsin Memon played the childhood characters of Sufia & Altaaf (the characters of Preity Zinta & Hrithik Roshan). There were a host of known faces playing important characters in the film.
I must make special mention of Yogin Soni who played the character of Sanjay Dutt & Sonali Kulkarni’s son, who dies accidentally leaving a void in their life; which is covered for a small period when young Altaf comes to their home as a child who is affected by the killing of his parents in the crossfire between the security forces & terrorists. Basically, “Mission Kashmir” dealt with terrorism and the tragedy of children suffering from war & violence related to terrorism.
“Mission Kashmir” was the third film of Hrithik Roshan in that year- “Kaho Naa… Pyar Hai” (January 2000) & “Fiza” (September 2000) being the other two. With these three films Hrithik found his place in the hearts of Hindi Film fans.
“Mission Kashmir” was a good film for Preity Zinta too, who had made her debut in 1998; her acting abilities were endorsed by this film.
This film had Sanjay Dutt & Jackie Shroff almost swapping their characters; “Khalnayak” (1993) had Jackie Shroff playing a cop & Sanjay Dutt playing a youth who is mislead by anti-social elements. “Mission Kashmir” had Jackie play Hilal Kohistani who brainwashes a young Altaf, and turns him against Inspector General Inayat Khan (Sanjay Dutt). Other films where Sanjay Dutt & Jackie Shroff were co-actors on opposite sides of the law were “Jung” (2000) & “Kartoos” (1999).
Today’s song is for wishing Preity Zinta on turning 50!!!!! She looks very PRETTY in this song which is given a wedding song kind of feel in an otherwise action-packed thriller. She is joined by Hrithik Roshan- almost like a gate crasher. This is the song that is instrumental in getting a grown-up Altaf & Sufia back in each other’s life.
The female singer for a major part is Jaspinder Narula & for the part where we see the young Sufiya singing the voice is Sunidhi Chauhan’s (hope I am correct in identifying the voices). Rahat Indori is the lyricist.
Ten years back, on Preity Zinta’s 40th birthday, I had written my feelings about this beauty in this post. I found that we have a fan of her’s in Avadh Lalji & the following was his comment:-

Pretty Preity is one of my favourites too.
An accomplished actress, she can very well portray serious roles like you have mentioned in your post. But her real forte lies in doing light roles which she lifts with bubbly performances. May be because these really reflect her vivacious and effervescent personality. Kind of “shokhiyan” seen in Gita Bali, Madhubala & Tanuja. And her dimples add to her beauty & charm.
She lives life on her terms. Owning and now managing on her own Kings XI Punjab, after Wadia scion has withdrawn himself to remain in the background.
But mostly I admire her for her courage in adhering to her principles despite possibility of grave (pun not intended) circumstances. She was the only one who steadfastly stuck to her guns and gave her evidence in the court when the film industry was grappling with the crisis of threats and blackmail from Mafia yet no one else was coming forward to depose against the mafia dons.
I also convey my belated birthday wishes to her.
