‘Kaabli Khan’ (1963) was produced and directed by K Amarnath under his banner, K Amarnath Productions. The cast included Ajit, Helen, Jayant, Ulhas, Samson, Salim Khan, Indira Bansal, Mukri, W M Khan, Amrit Rana etc. The film belonged to costume drama genre. This was the first film for Helen as a lead actress. Incidentally, it was also in K Amarnath’s film in which Helen got her first opportunity of solo dance performance. Another interesting thing about this film is that for the first time, Salim Khan and Helen have worked together though they did not have any dialogues between them. In this film, Salim Khan had a role of a prince. Except for a couple of dialogues, he was mostly seen as a prisoner and hence his exposure in the film was limited.
Producer-director, K Amarnath had spotted Salim Khan in Indore when he had gone to attend the marriage of film distributor, Tarachand Barjatya’s son sometime in 1958. At the venue, he saw Salim Khan who had come to meet actor Ajit as a family acquaintance. Amarnath saw in him the potential of a lead actor. Although Salim Khan had said to him that he had no experience of acting and he was aiming to become a cricketer, Amarnath paid some advance amount and asked him to come to Mumbai for a screen test. Salim Khan came to Mumbai in 1958. However, probably with the box office failure of ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959), Amarnath did not want to take risk with a newcomer as a lead actor in his next film, ‘Baarat’ (1960). So, Salim Khan got a small role in this film. And this trend of getting small/side roles continued for his next 24 films. His last film as an actor was ‘Jahaan Pyaar Miley’ (1969).
It was during the making of S M Sagar’s ‘Sarhadi Luteraa’ (1966) in which Salim Khan had a prominent role, he met Javed Akhtar for the first time who was assistant director to Producer-Director, S M Sagar. Their friendship continued even after the completion of this film. By this time, Salim Khan has made a decision not to act anymore in the film. As per his assessment, he lacked the art of projecting his role effectively. He was already assisting writer, Abrar Alvi. With Javed Akhtar, he formed ‘Salim-Javed’ duo as story-screenplay-dialogue writer. After the success of their first film, ‘Andaaz’ (1971) as a writer, rest is history. [With inputs from Salim Khan’s interview, on Rajya Sabha TV programme, ‘Guftagoo’ and from K Amarnath Website].
‘Kaabli Khan’ (1963) was made in the background of Indo-China war of 1962. He made the film with a fictional story of fictional countries without assigning the timeline of the story. In a way, the main character ‘Kaabli Khan’ represented the oppressed country while Shahzaada was symbolic of a country believed in expansionist policy. After facing many challenges, Kaabli Khan triumphs over Shahzaada. But he did not take over his country, instead, he handed over the reign of the country to defeated Shahzaada’s son. The story of the film in detail is as under:
As a part of the expansionary vision, King Shahbaaz (Samson) has conquered Yakistan, whose king has surrendered after lot of bloodshed and destruction. Some of the defeated king’s army led by Kaabli Khan (Ajit) does not want to surrender to the King Shahbaaz. Kaabli Khan is held prisoner by Shahbaaz’s army. But he breaks the prison and runs away along with his likeminded prisoners with arms and ammunitions. They reach their home village and prevent from looting in the village by Shahbaaz’s soldiers. They return to King Shahbaaz who is very annoyed with his soldiers.
Just as Shahbaaz is working out some strategies to tackle Kaabli Khan and enthuse his own army, his son, Halaaku (Salim Khan), promises to capture Kaabli Khan. He proceeds with his soldiers to Kaabli Khan’s village and scouts for him in his hideout. Kaabli Khan is untraceable as he has crossed over to a neighbouring kingdom of Kohistan. He meets the Sardar of Kohistan and seek his help in fighting Shahbaaz since the latter’s expansionist policy is a danger for Kohistan as well. On the suggestion of Sardar, Kaabli Khan joins his army but not Kaabli Khan’s soldiers as they refuse to work under the command of Kohistan. So, it is only Kaabli Khan who has become a part of Kohistan’s army.
As a commander of Kohistan’s army, one day, Kaabli Khan visits an army cantonment near the border with Shahbaaz’s country. To his surprise, he finds that in a tea shop owned by Mirza (Mukri), soldiers and their commander, Jabar Khan (Jayant) are merry making with drinks and dances. What is more shocking for Kaabli Khan is that Jabar Khan is having a secret meeting with Shahbaaz’s emissary, Rakib Khan (Ulhas). Later, he comes to know through Mirza that Jabar Khan has done a deal with Rakib Khan by accepting bribe to fix Kaabli Khan.
Halaaku with his troops has reached the border of Kohistan and Kaabli Khan has requested army chief to fortify the border against the advancing troops of Halaaku. During the visit of the army chief at the border, Halaaku kidnaps him. However, Kaabli Khan manoeuvres not only the army chief’s escape but also kidnaps Halaaku. On the other hand, King Shahbaaz after getting the news of Halaaku kidnapping the army chief of Kohistan, personally visit to congratulate his son. But his happiness is short lived as he sees his son, Halaaku brought as a prisoner. He becomes a hopeless spectator lest Kaabli Khan would kill Halaaku. Kaabli Khan returns to Yaarganj with Halaaku as a prisoner.
Now, it is the duty of Rakib Khan to assuage his King that he would tackle Kaabli Khan to get Halaaku released. He devises a plan under which Rakib Khan comes with Haseena (Helen) in the guise of entertaining the soldiers of Yaarganj with her dances. But the real intention is to seduce Kaabli Khan Initially, Haseena’s magic does not work on Kaabli Khan. But over a period of time, Kaabli Khan succumbs to her charm. He decides to get married with her. But before that he discovers that Haseena is a spy of King Shahbaaz and orders her to be out of his sight. Haseena reveals that it is true that she has become a spy of King Shahbaaz but it was out of some compulsions to save the life of some citizens who are in the captivity of Shahbaaz and would be released only when she lures Kaabli Khan to get arrested.
Jabar Khan enters at this moment where he is exposed as a traitor. A sword fight ensues between Kaabli Khan and Jabar Khan during which army chief visits the cantonment and orders the arrest of Kaabli Khan and Haseena for working against the Kohistan. The are put behind bar waiting for their executions. Jabbar Khan and Rakib Khan rejoice.
However, Kaabli Khan is able to send the SOS to his followers in Yakistan who helps both to escape from prison. This news goes to King Shahbaaz who orders Rakib Khan to find out where Kaabli Khan is. This time he would himself meet him to settle the score. Shahbaaz and his troops march towards Yakistan and find Kaabli Khan, Haseena and his followers celebrating their escape from the prison. In Kohistan, traitor Jabar Khan is keeping ready to join Shahbaaz with his loyal troops and he put the army chief of Kohistan in jail.
In the climax, Kaabli Khan agrees to meet Shahbaaz during which he puts a condition that his son Halaaku would be released only when his troops withdraw from Yakistan. Shahbaaz responds by saying that first Halaaku should be freed and hand over to him. Kaabli Khan agrees and releases Halaaku. Soon, Shahbaaz orders his troops to arrest Kaabli Khan and Haseena upon which Kaabli Khan tells him that his troops have been surrounded by his followers. It would be better to have a fight between them rather than more bloodsheds. In the sword fight between Kaabli Khan and Shahbaaz, the latter gets killed. Yakistan is freed from the occupation from Shahbaaz’s army and Halaaku retreats with his troops to his country. Haseena and Kaabli Khan with his followers return to a freed Yakistan.
It is a typical B grade masala film which, to my surprise, is watchable because of its fast-paced script. All songs are melodious and there are four songs which have been picturised on Helen.
The film had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and set to music by Chitragupt. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘khinche khinche se nazar se nazar churaaye huye’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar for Helen. Ajit, Jayant and Ulhas among others are present to watch Helen’s dance.
The context of the song in the film is that after having failed to capture Kaabli Khan (Ajit), Rakib Khan (Ulhas), King Shahbaaz’s adviser in collusion with the traitor, Jabar Khan (Jayant) devise a plan to trap him by using Haseena (Helen) to seduce him. The first attempt fails as Kaabli Khan walks out halfway through her dance performance.
