#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————
Today’s song is from the 1962 movie ‘Rashtraveer Shivajee’. I had come across this song recently when I was presenting patriotic songs during Republic Day celebrations. I was looking for songs that praise our national heroes, freedom fighters, and the many unsung heroes who fought the battle for freedom. Before the Britishers our country was invaded by various alien rulers. These rulers tried to dominate the native people by crossing all limits of cruelty, killing them, making them slaves, by converting their faith and religion. However, from time to time there have been courageous and brave sons and daughters of this land who fought to protect the native people of this country. They included rulers from various regions as well as people like Shivaji who created their own kingdom- or ‘Hindavee Swaraajya’ and gave fierce fights to rulers like Moghuls.
Since I come from Maharashtra it is natural that today is a very big day for me. We have grown up reading the stories of Shivajee and his bravery, hearing a lot about him and listening to his life-story through various mediums. Maharashtra has produced several inspirational figures. The name of Shivajee occupied pride of place among them. Since childhood we had been reading about Shivajee and his inspiring stories of fighting the Moghuls and how he built the Maratha Empire.
Kavi Bhushan, poet of Brajbhasha (inorporating words from Bundeli and Baisvadi dialects and also Arabic and Persian words)has written glowingly about Shivaji in his poems.
The life of Shivajee maharaj has also been described by the historian and writer Shiv Shaahir Babasaheb Purandare. People who had watched his play ‘Jaanataa Raajaa’ and heard his commentary from the album ‘Shiv-Kalyaan Raajaa’ must be aware of this. I would also like to mention here the epic novel ‘Shreemaan Yogee’ written by Ranjeet Desai.
I will not go into other details of the life story of Chhatrapati Shivajee since it is readily available.
After independence of India, the history that we are beingh taught in schools may not necessarily reflect true facts. One can notice that it has been sought to depict Shivaji as a regional hero only, whereas some other figures may have been artifially elevated to high stature.
Films have been made on the life of Shivajee. While there are many such films made in Marathi, two Hindi movies made on the life of Shivajee are represented on the blog, namely ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji-1952’ and ‘Raashtraveer Shivaaji-1962’.
I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Raashtraveer Shivaajee’.
“Rashtraveer Shivajee-1962” was directed by Sultan for ‘Firdaus Films, Bombay’. Sultan, the director of this movie, also produced it. It had Shyam Kumar, Ratnamala, Anjum, Rajrani, Heera Sawant, Bela Bose, Leela, Prabha Gadkar, Sujata Kumari, Manjula, Baba Suleman (as Child Shivaji 1) , Nitin Kumar (as Child Shivaji 2), S.K. Shyam, Fazal Khan, Abbas Bhai, Radheshyam, Abu Baker, Pandey, Narmada Shankar, Dongre, Balram, Maqbool, Jilani, Siddiqui, Ajit Kumar, Nazir Kashmiri, Muhammad Ayub, Raj Kishore, Keni, Dubey, Ameer Ahmed, Hanuman, Safi, Fazlu, Prem, Bihari, Purushottam, Bagla, Kalla, Patil, Baijnath, Kathana and others. The screenplay of this movie was written by Sultan who also produced and directed this movie. Dialogues for this movie were written by Kuldeep Talwar. The editing of this movie was done by Alimuhammad. The lyrics of all songs of this movie are written by Anjaan and music was composed by Suresh and Talwar.
Today (19 february 2025) we are celebrating the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivajee, and I feel that it would be appropriate to present this song on this occasion today. It is an inspirational song which talks about Shivajee and his passion for ‘swaraaj’ – self-rule-or aazaadee.
While presenting one of the songs in the audio album (in Marathi) ‘Shiv Kalyaan Raajaa’, Babasaheb Purandare says in his commentary in Marathi that,
“ved laaglyaa shivaay Itihaas ghadat naahee
vedee maansech Itihaas ghadavtaat”
I am trying to translate it here as ‘One has to have that craziness and passion to create history, without going to the level of extreme craziness one cannot create history’
The song under discussion expresses the same sentiments and describes Shivajee as ‘aazaadee kaa matwaalaa’ …
The singer of this inspirational song is Manna Dey and lyrics are by Anjaan. Music is composed by Suresh-Talwar.
Let’s pay our respect to this legendary warrior.

Song-Dhany dhany wo veer Shivaa (Rashtraveer Shivaajee)(1962) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Suresh Talwar
Lyrics
a aa aa aa aa aa aa
apnaa desh dharma thaa apnaa aa
jisko praanon se ae pyaaraa
swatantrataa ke liye lahu do
jis naahar ne lalkaaraa aa
tharraataa thhaa
jis ke bal se ae
har pal dushman dal saaraa aa
baat baat talwaar thhee jiskee
shabd shabd thhaa angaaraa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
wo aazaadee kaa matwaalaa aa
jisne bhaarat ke praanon mein
phoonkee ek nayee jwaalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
swadesh par jab videshiyon ke
zor zulm kaa thhaa shaasan
jakad rahe thhe janmbhoomi ko
paraadheentaa ke bandhan
kootneeti se gairon kee jab
apne huye paraaye thhe
vipattiyon ke kaale baadal
jab bhaarat par chhaaye thhe
devdoot ban aayaa
jag ko nayee jyot denewaalaa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
bikhree shakti desh ki jisne
ek dor mein phir baandhee
jiske aage tik na sakee
anyaayon kee zaalim aandhee
vidrohee ban veer shivaa
yoon bairee ke sanmukh aayaa
ek zaraa saa tinkaa jo
?? saagar se takraayaa
chhakke chhudaa diye dushman ke ae ae
chhakke chhudaa diye dushman ke
thhaa toofaanon kaa paalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa aa
uthho jawaan saathiyon
tumhe qasam hain aan kee
watan kee shaan ke liye
lagaa do baazee jaan kee ee
nayaa nashaa
nayee umang ho
nayaa junoon ho o
swatantrataa tumhen milegee
tum jawaan khoon do o
jawaan khoon do
jawaan khoon do o
dukh dard desh kaa baanto
bediyaan kaanto
aaj kuchh kar dikhlaanaa hai
watan par mar mit jaanaa hai
daur khushiyon kaa laanaa hai
jee ee
jee jee
daur khushiyon kaa laanaa hai
jee ee
jee jee jee jee jee
dhanya dhanya wo
veer shivaa
wo aazaadee kaa matwaalaa aa
jisne bhaarat ke praanon mein
phoonkee ek nayee jwaalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa aa
mahaaraashtra se aazaadee kee
lehar ubhartee hee aayee
soye huye is raastra mein phir se
nayee chetnaa lehraayee
tilak Gokhale
wahee lagaaye phir naare
jinkee sachchee aan ke aage
niklaa swatantrataa kaa sooraj
chamkaa hanstaa ujiyaalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
wo aazaadee kaa matwaalaa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
jai bhawaanee
jai bhawaanee
Jai ?
Jai?
jisne dee aawaaz watan ke
baanke veer jawaanon ko
ek rang mein rang diyaa
sab desh bhakt deewaanon ko
jiske josheelay bolon se
aisee nayee lehar aayee
matribhoomi par mar mitne kee
sab ne saath kasam khaayee
kood pade sab yudhh bhoomi mein
kood pade sab yudhh bhoomi mein
pee kar matwaalee haalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
jai swadesh kee bolbadhhaa
jab swatantrataa kaa abhimaanee
videsheeyon par toot padee
bijlee see senaa toofaanee
shatru chakit rah gaye
kidhar se daivee shaktee utar aayee
dagar dagar mein
veer shivaa kee vijay pataakaa lehraayee
? safaltaa kee devee ne
? safaltaa kee devee ne
pehnaa hee dee jaimaalaa aa
dhanya dhanya wo veer shivaa
mahaaraashtra se aazaadee kee lehar ubhartee hee aayee
soye huye is raashtra mein phir se nayee chetnaa lehraayee
Tilak Gokhale Gaandhi ne bhee
wahee lagaaye phir naare
jinkee sachchee aan ke aage
jhuk hee gaye shatru saare
niklaa swatantrataa kaa sooraj a a
