‘Love And Murder’ (1966) was an obscure film which I came to know very recently due to its couple of pleasing dance songs composed by O P Nayyar. The film was produced by B K Adarsh under his banner, Adarshlok and was directed by Raja Paranjpe. The cast included Ramesh Deo, Jaymala in lead roles, supported by Prithviraj Kapoor, Heeralal, P Kailash, Helen, Kammo, Chandrakant, Asit Sen, Edwina etc. One of the features of this film’s marketing was that the publicity posters of the film contained only the name of producer, director and the music director. The names of even the main actors were not mentioned.
Although multiple VCDs of the film are available online, unfortunately, all of them are of below average quality. The film is a suspense thriller. The story in details is as under:
The film starts with a gang of four robbers breaking open the vault of a nearby bank’s branch to rob of its cash. While the cash is being siphoned off from the vault, the four robbers hear the police siren. In a hurry to run out of the bank, one robber, Kedar (P Kailash) runs away in one direction with a bag of Rs. 20 lakhs. The remaining three robbers run away in different directions and report the matter to their unseen Boss who is not happy with them. The three gang members are given 3 days’ time to find out the whereabout of Kedar with the looted amount. Otherwise, they would be shot dead. Simultaneously, the unseen Boss put Julia (Helen) in the guise of a dancer to keep surveillance on them to ensure that they are on their job.
The three robbers meet in a restaurant to chalk out their plan to nab Kedar. Al Capano (Hiralal), one of the robbers, feels that Kedar may have gone to Mumbai where he has a sister, Geeta (Jaymala). So, they decide to make a visit to Mumbai. Julia reports the matter to the unseen Boss who assigns her to follow them in Mumbai. If they are not successful in tracing Kedar, then she should follow his dictum, ‘love and murder’.
Meanwhile, Kedar reaches Mumbai. He visits a jewellery shop run by Ruby (Kammo) and converts the looted Rs.20 lakhs into a costly diamond. Thereafter, he asks Geeta to meet him at a hotel in Juhu. When she is on the way, a stranger stops his car and addresses her by her name. He introduces himself as Ranjit (Ramesh Deo) who says that he knows her brother. He drops her to Juhu hotel where Kedar is waiting for her. He presents her some gifts and a hard bound book where he has concealed the diamond. He says that better days are ahead for them. However, within few hours, she finds him drown in the bathtub and dead. After hearing the commotion, Ranjit comes and helps Geeta in tackling with the police.
The other three robbers have also reached Mumbai and are on the trail of Geeta when they come to know about the death of Kedar. The postmortem report concludes that Kedar died of drowning in the bathtub. After the death of Kedar, they suspect that Geeta may be having the looted money of Rs.20 lakhs. So, they go for pursuing her. Ranjit, on the other hand, after the death of Kedar, convinces her to stay in a room in Rainbow Resort for her safety where he himself stays in an adjoining room. The three robbers on their pursuit to get the loot of Rs. 20 lakhs go to Geeta’s room and search for the loot without any success. While returning they meet Ranjit who introduces himself as a newly inducted member of the unseen Boss’s gang. They join hands with a promise to share the loot equally and they also get stationed in Rainbow Resort run by Ruby, an agent of the gang.
In the meanwhile, the case of bank robbery and the death of Kedar is handled by the crime branch under Inspector Mathur (Prithviraj Kapoor). He summons Geeta and tells her to inform the police if she becomes aware of the loot amount. He tells her that she is under the surveillance of the police as well as 3-4 members of the robber gang.
Geeta develops affinity toward Ranjit as he has been her saviour during the last few hours when she was in deep trouble after the death of her brother, Kedar. In their hotel lobby, all three robbers talk about Ranjit’s strategy of taking Geeta into confidence for knowing the whereabout of the looted money which Geeta clandestinely hears. She starts suspecting Ranjit. She goes to the police station and apprises Inspector Mathur about it. He cautions her about Ranjit whose dossier with the police identifies him to be associated with robbers gang.
In the night, Al Capano enters Geeta’s room and threatens to strangulate her. However, before he does, he gets killed by an unknown person. Police suspects Geeta as it has happened in her room. Coincidentally, her brother Kedar had also died in a bathtub when she was in the room. Geeta is arrested. During the bail hearing, Ranjit in the disguise of an old person submits to the court that he has a proof to show that Geeta is innocent. He runs a film clip to show that the knife was thrown from the backside while Geeta was sitting on her bed in front of the victim. Geeta is released on bail. With this, her suspicion on Ranjit is cleared. She becomes close to Ranjit once again. Ranjit gifts her a ring in token of his promise to marry her.
Julia, who has been assigned to keep a tab on the three robbers, is trying to woo Ranjit when she identifies him as a close friend of Geeta. Ranjit tells her that he is behaving as a close friend of Geeta only to get the looted money. Once he has access to that money, his heart is meant to her (Julia). Actually, both Julia and Ranjit are fooling each other with the intention of laying their hands on the looted money. The remaining two robbers kidnap Geeta and take her to a secluded place to keep her away from Ranjit. However, Ranjit rescues her. The car in which one of the robbers is running away from Ranjit gets exploded on the way killing him.
The last robber who is still alive goes to Ruby and threatens her as to why Kedar has come to her. She spills the beans by revealing that he bought from her a costly diamond for Rs.20 lakhs and concealed the diamond in a book which he has given to Geeta. Ruby also gets mysteriously killed soon after her revelation. Now the last robber and Julia are after retrieving the book from Geeta which she has already given to a priest of a nearby temple. Geeta goes to the priest and retrieves the book from the priest. She returns home and removes the diamond from the book when Julia reaches her home and asks for the diamond by threatening her with the gun. At the right time, Ranjit reaches and during their scuffle, Geeta runs away from her house.
Ranjit kidnaps Julia and gets the details from her about the gang. The unseen Boss is none other than Mangal Singh, disguised himself as Inspector Mathur who has a fictious police station near the hotel. As soon as Julia has disclosed the details, she is also gets killed mysteriously. However, this time, Ranjit identifies the killer as Mangal Singh who runs away with Geeta. A long fight between Mangal Singh and Ranjit take place during which Mangal Singh dies in his own created death trap.
Next day, Geeta goes to the police station to deposit the diamond to Inspector Mathur. However, this time, she is directed to a different place where Inspector Mathur sits. She is shocked to find Ranjit as Inspector Mathur who operated in the assumed name of Ranjit to smash the gang of robbers. Inspector Mathur (Ramesh Deo) and Geeta gets united.
The title of the film gave me an impression of a usual pattern of a ‘B’ grade film. But the film has been handled in a much superior way without too much of stunts or action. It has a breezy screenplay which keeps the momentum of the progress of the story. The suspense as been well maintained. The selection of Ramesh Deo as the lead actor was apt at that period when he was seen doing the role of a villain in some films. So, the audience will take him to be so which he is not when the film comes to an end. The real villain in the film was Prithviraj Kapoor which many would not expect him to be so in any film. There are a few weak points in the film. For example, out of six songs in the film, as many as three songs, especially the romantic songs between Ramesh Deo and Jaimala drags the smooth flow of the story in the film.
The film had six songs written by S H Bihari (3), Aziz Kashmiri (2) and Shewan Rizvi (1) which were set to music by O P Nayyar. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘jaan-o-dil dono hain haazir’ rendered by Asha Bhosle on the words of S H Bihari. The song is picturised on Jaymala. It is a dream sequence song when Jaymala imagines her marriage with Ramesh Deo who has just promised that they would get married soon.
