Today’s song is from the film Suhagan-1954.

The film was a remake of a Marathi film, “Suwasini”-1953. It was produced by Datta Dharmadhikari for his own banner Alhad Chitra, Poona. (Alhad was his son’s name). The film was a Hit in Marathi, so a Hindi remake was made. It was directed by Marathi’s famous and successful director Anant Mane. Of course, when he directed this film, he was an assistant to Datta Dharmadhikari, but very soon he became a big name in Marathi.

Anant Maane was a struggling Director in 1949, but due to hard work and of course with good luck, he became a very big and renowned director in Marathi cinema. His contribution in the Hindi cinema was of a minimal nature but his Marathi films were mostly Hit films.

Anant Maane was born in a lower middle class family of Kolhapur, on 22-9-1915. His uncle Gyanba Maane was working in Prabhat films as an actor (in his last days Gyanba was seen selling vegetables on the roads of Kolhapur, for survival). Anant used to go with him to Prabhat studio. The studio life attracted him. At the age of 15 years, he left school and joined Prabhat. he was given work in the Laboratory. First 2 years he worked without pay and then he got a salary of Rs.10 pm.

While in Prabhat he worked and learned a lot in editing, Artwork, Sound recording in addition to working as an extra in a Mob scene. He was impressed with Shantaram’s knowledge in the studio. When the film ” Sairandhri” was made, he was given Vishnu’s role in it.

His diligence impressed Shantaram and he was taken to the Editing laboratory. When Prabhat shifted to Poona, he too came with it and continued working in editing. He did editing of all Prabhat films till 1941. When Shantaram left Prabhat in 1942, he too left but joined as an assistant to director Raja Nene till 1946. In 1949, he directed his first Hindi film ” Jai Bhim”-1949.

In 1950, Anant mane and Dada Dharmadhikari started ” Alhad Chitra”. Its very first Marathi film ” Bala jo jo re” became a hit and celebrated Silver jubilee. Their next two films ” Stree janma hi tuzi kahani” and ” Chimni Pakhare” also became Jubilee films. Chimni Pakhare was remade in Hindi as Nanhe Munne-1952. Anant mane directed 2 Hindi films in 1954-Kalakar and Suhagan, which were remakes of their Marathi films.

After this he concentrated only on Marathi cinema and became a well known and successful director of 58 Marathi films. He also wrote stories and screenplays of 14 films. He won many State and Central Government awards. He considered Shantaram as his Guru. Even after being so successful, he worked as an assistant director to Shantaram for his famous film ‘ Pinjara”-1972. Anant Mane died on 5-10-1995.

The film Suhagan-1954 had music by a New pair…Vasant- Ramchandra. No one knew who was in the pair. Most people thought that it was a pair of Vasant Desai and C. Ramchandra. I was also under this impression and I had said so in my comments in 2012 also. Few years later I read a book ” Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar” by Madhu Potdar and then I learnt that this was the pair of Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar, both composers from the Marathi film world. Together they gave music to 5 Hindi films. Individually, Vasant Pawar gave music to 50 Marathi films and 8 Hindi films. Ramchandra Wadhavkar gave music to 5 Marathi and 5 Hindi films.
Famous director Datta Dharmadhikari gave break to this pair of Composers- Vasant-Ramchandra ( Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar ) for 5 of his films in Hindi, but they could not get any work from other banners and their career in Hindi, as a pair, ended with these 5 films only.

Vasant Pawar ( 1927 to 6-8-1965) was from Kolhapur. He was professionally trained in Sitar. He was also proficient in playing Flute,Sarangi and harmonium etc. He was assistant to Khemchand Prakash in Ranjit. From 1946, he worked for Sudhir Phadke. He gave music ( under guidance of Sudhir Phadke) to film Jai Bhim-52, Earlier he had composed one song in film Do kaliyan-49,where his co-composer was P.Shankar. Finally, he composed music for Shivleela-52 (Bilingual in Hindi/Marathi). His music was extremely popular in Marathi films and also for NFS of Lata,Asha and many others. His Bhavgeets became very popular and were sung by leading Marathi singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Sudhir Phadke, Manik Verma, Sulochana Kadam and many others.Due to alcoholism,he died in 1965 at the young age of just 38 years.

Ramchandra Wadhavkar ( 1919 to 2-12-1972) started with Prabhat films in 1935 as a Harmonium player. He also played Organ and Sitar. Along with V Shantaram,he too left Prabhat and joined Rajkamal. For a few years he worked in a private company too and hence could not accept Shantaram’s offer for films twice. He joined Vasant Pawar in 1952 as a composer. He died in 1972.

Vasant Ramchandra gave music to 5 films.

1. Nanhe munne-52 ( Remake of Marathi film-Chimni Pakharen चिमणी पाखरें )

2.Mahatma-53 (Trilingual in Hindi, English and Marathi)

3.Suhagan-54 ( Remake of Marathi film Suvasini सुवासिनी )

4. Kalakaar-54

5.Savdhaan-54

All the above films were produced by Datta (Dada) Dharmadhikari, under the banner of his “Aalhad Chitra-Poona”. He also directed 3 films. Only Kalakaar and Suhagan were directed by his protege Anant Maane.

The cast of the film was Geeta Bali, Vijaylaxmi, Sulochana (Latkar), Shyam Kumar, H. Prakash, Janakidas, Indumati (Lele), Shakuntala and many others. Sulochana is the name of ” Same Name Confusion”. There was Sulochana (Ruby Meyers) and Sulochana (Latkar). Both acted in the same period and were credited only as ‘Sulochana’ creating confusion.

Sulochana Latkar (born Rangu Diwan/ Sahib jaan, 30 July 1928 – 4 June 2023), known by her screen name Sulochana, was an actress of Marathi and Hindi cinema, who acted in 50 films in Marathi and 248 films in Hindi. She was most known for her performances in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Meeth Bhakar (1949), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Dhakti Jaoo (1958) and Sangte Aika (1959) in the lead roles, as well as for the mother roles she played in Hindi cinema right from 1959 film Dil Deke Dekho to the year 1995. She and Nirupa Roy epitomized the “mother” roles right from 1959 until the early 1990s.

She was often paired opposite Nazir Hussain, Trilok Kapoor and Ashok Kumar throughout her career in Hindi films. Since 1969, she often played an on-screen close relative to the character played by Rajesh Khanna and some of their famous films included Dil Daulat Duniya, Bahraon Ke Sapne, Doli, Kati Patang, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Prem Nagar, Aakraman, Bhola Bhala, Tyaag, Aashiq Hoon Baharaon Ka and Adhikar (1986). Latkar lived in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. She was married at the age of 14. Her daughter’s name is Kanchan Ghanekar who was the wife of Marathi stage superstar Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar.

Latkar died from respiratory failure at Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar, Mumbai, on 4 June 2023. She was 94. Latkar was a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri (1999). She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2009, she was awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award by the Government of Maharashtra.

The story of the film Suhagan-1954 was….

The film emphasises that the grass is always greener outside the window, but when one goes closure to it,he can see that it is only an illusion.A Suhagan’s happiness is in her home and not in money, is the message given here.

Radha,a young unmarried girl paints rosy pictures of a married life. When she gets married to Shyam, on the suggestion of her saheli Jamuna and her husband Govind, she finds that Shyam is a very good person, he loves her also, but he earns so less that Radha’s dreams are not fulfilled. Slowly, she starts fighting with Shyam and one day, after a big fight, she leaves home. Their neighbours Rambha and Ramesh, who are crooks, give her support and send her to Bombay. Radha becomes a singer in Bombay. She is now happy with the money and free life. One day Shankar, sent by Rambha tries to rape her and tells her that she has to pay back the fees for all this good life. She runs away and joins an “Abla Nari Niketan” which in fact runs immoral traffic. She is also trapped but she saves herself and reports the matter to Police.

Police rescue her. She now realises that there is no place like a Home and real happiness is in Husband’s love, for a Suhagan. She accidentally meets her friend Jamuna and Govind. in Bombay and they convince her to return home, where Shyam is still awaiting her with open arms.

Radha comes back home. By now, Shyam also has become well to do in money, but Radha now only wants his love as a SUHAGAN and not money.

Let us now enjoy today’s 71 year old song by Geeta Dutt….

Lyrics

paanee ka bulbula
paanee ka bulbula
ye zindagaanee
kaliyon kee hai do din kee jawaanee
hans ke bitaaye jaa
gaa ke bitaaye jaa
mastee ke naye naye bastee basaaye jaa
paanee ka bulbula
ye zindgaanee
kaliyon kee hai do din kee jawaanee
hans ke bitaaye ja
gaa ke bitaaye ja
mastee ke naye naye bastee basaaye jaa

deep bujh jaayega
peechhe pachhtaayega
deep bujh jaayega
peechhe pachhtaayega
roop dhhal jaayega
aansu bahaayega
bahaayegaa
sapne sajaaye jaa
man bahlaaye jaa
??
basaaye jaa
paanee ka bulbulaa
paanee ka bulbulaa
ye zindgaanee
kaliyon kee hai do din kee jawaanee
hans ke bitaaye jaa
gaa ke bitaaye jaa
mastee kee nayee nayee bastee basaaye jaa

khushiyon kee jholee
khushiyon kee jholee
bhar le ye jholee
kismat kee kashtee
dolee na dolee
kismat kee kashtee
dolee na dolee
tu muskuraaye jaa
muskuraaye jaa
muskuraaye jaa
naye naye raaste
hain tere waaste
aage aage badhtee hain
apna banaaye ja
paanee ka bulbula
paanee ka bulbula ye zindagaanee
kaliyon kee hai do din kee jawaanee
hans ke bitaaye jaa
gaa ke bitaaye jaa
mastee ke naye naye bastee basaaye jaa
