Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post by Sadanandji has triggered this post. The song in his post was ‘inspired’ by a Sinhalese pop song of the seventies, which most of us have heard and I am sure have sung with ‘our own made-up-lyrics’.
Over the last few months, the social media platform Facebook, has been carrying a countdown of sorts. The countdown ended on 2nd March. The countdown was being posted by some fans of a CULT FILM that had the title “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”. What was special about 2nd March? Any guesses?

2nd March 1965 was the release date of “The Sound Of Music” which had Julie Andrews playing the lovable nun- Maria- who enters the household of Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) as the governess to his seven children. The film is 60 years old! WOW!!! 😲

Also, I saw some videos posted by the followers of the classic film, of course on social media, where the actors (now all grown up and in their 60s & 70s) of the film were singing “My Favorite Things” at an awards function where Julie Andrews (now 89) was being conferred with a Lifetime Achievement Award. It was a moment which had the audience moist-eyed.

The film had a whole lot of songs that are still fresh in the minds of its fans. The film itself has inspired a few Indian film makers to use the story & Indainize it – the unforgettable ‘Parichay’ (which itself is a classic) being a case to prove my point. I have seen a few Malayalam films with the same story & read about a Ameesha Patel- Rani Mukherjee- Saif Ali Khan film.

Just as the story of “The Sound Of Music” has spawned inspired works so did its music. We can draw a parallel between “Do-Re-Mi” & “Saa re ke saa re ga ma ko lekar” of ‘Parichay’. Over the last few days, I recalled a song from the 1995 released, Kajol- Ajay Devgan starrer, “Hulchul”. That song started ‘I am sixteen going on seventeen, dil kyu na dhak dhak kare, haye dil kyu na dhak dhak kare‘- obviously the lyrics were inspired from the classic ‘I am sixteen going on seventeen‘ from ‘The Sound Of Music’.

Also, looking at the choreography of the song from ‘Hulchul’, shades of the popular Madhuri Dixit- Anil Kapoor song from ‘Beta’ are visible; not to miss Kajol’s outfit which also reminds us of Madhuri’s ‘Beta’ outift. A highly inspired song – I must say.

“Hulchul” (1995) had Vinod Khanna playing father to Ronit Roy. Ajay Devgan grows up in Vinod Khanna’s home after his mother Sujata Mehta is arrested for some crime (don’t remember the details now). Kajol and her uncle Kadar Khan are petty thieves. Amrish Puri and his son (played by Arif Khan) are the cause for the upheavals in Vinod Khanna’s family.

“Hulchul” was produced by Lalit Kapoor & Shabnam Kapoor and written & directed by Anees Bazmee. It had music by Anu Malik. The six songs of the film were written by M.G. Hashmat, Indeevar, Zafar Gorakhpuri, Abhilaash, Faiz Anwar & Kulwant Jani. Vinod Rathod, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, Sadhana Sargam, Alisha Chinai, and Sonu Nigam were the playback singers used.
I have read somewhere that this was the first time that Kajol & Ajay Devgan worked together & that this was the director’s debut too.
The song that I mentioned above was sung by Vinod Rathod & Alisha Chinai who turned 60 a few days back.

Alisha was born on March 18, 1965 as Sujatha Chinai. She started her career as an independent pop singer in albums like “Jadoo”, “Aah Alisha” and “Baby Doll”. She was introduced to playback singing in movies by music director Bappi Lahari in the 1980s and sang a number of hit songs in movies like ‘Tarzan’, “Dance Dance”, “Commando”, “Guru” and “Love Love Love”. She sang “Kaate Nahin Katte” in the movie ‘Mr. India’ which is still one of her biggest hits of the 1980s. The song “Kajra Re” in the movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ won her a Filmfare Award Wishing her all the best in life (belatedly).

(I don’t know if I have been successful in explaining the connections to Sadanandji’s post & “The Sound Of Music”. The post itself and the song therein are ‘not a patch’ to the inspirations.)

Lyrics

I am sixteen
going on seventeen
dil kyun na dhak dhak kare

phir bhee aisa lage kuchh kamee hai
o jaanam

sixteen
going on seventeen
seventeen
dil kyun na dhak dhak kare
haaye dil kyu na dhak dhak kare

mehka
mehka badan
behka
behka samaa
mausam
hai tujhse haseen
raaten
tujhse jawaan

aag toone ye kaisee laga dee
jism saara pighalne laga
toone aankhon se kya baat keh dee
dil deewaana machalne laga

aaj dil mein udaasee hai kitnee
ye haseen raat pyaasee hai kitnee
o jaanam
tere bin
I am sixteen
sixteen
going on seventeen
seventeen
dil kyun na dhak dhak kare
haaye dil kyun na dhak dhak kare

mitaa de
ye dooriyaan
kya hai
majbooriyaan
dhoondhhe ae
dil ye mera aa
teree ee nazdeekiyaan

main sulagtee zameen tu hai baadal
haaye kaise main tanha rahoon
tu nadee hai kinaare pe tere
ye bata kaise pyaasa rahoon

ab to ek pal guzaara na jaaye
mujhse mausam sambhaala na jaaye
o jaanam
tere bin
raat hai rang hai zindagee hai
phir bhi aisa lage kuchh kamee hai
o jaanam
tere bin

I am sixteen
sixteen
going on seventeen
seventeen
dil kyun na dhak dhak kare
haaye dil kyun na dhak dhak kare
you are sixteen
sixteen
aha
going on seventeen
hahaha
seventeen
dil kyu na dhak dhak kare
haaye
dil kyun na dhak dhak kare

o o o o
o o o o

Not heard this song before ,nor seen the movie.

Only ‘Hulchal’ I remeber is one starring Zeenat ( in her debut?)

Alisha has sung it well

Thanks for the post

It was a normal masala movie. You have not missed much. It just had some songs that were popular then and now “out of mind”. Of course if one hears them now we will feel “did we hear it back then?” They all sound “suna suna sa”
