In this episode, the 53rd episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1999.
In 1999, 90 Hindi movies containing 548 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 7 of these movies and she sang 14 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 8 % of the movies released in 1999. Her voice was heard in 2.5 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1999.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 4 music directors and 5 lyricists in these 7 movies released in 1999. Laxmikant Pyarelal were the most prolific music directors with Lata, with 664 songs in HFM with Lata Mangeshkar by the end of 1999. Shankar Jaikishan with 457 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were in the second position. R D Burman with 332 Lata Mangeshkar and Kalyanji Anandji with 307 songs were next ahead of C Ramchandra with 275 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Chitragupta (239), Madan Mohan (195), S D Burman (179),Naushad (146), Roshan (144), Hemant Kumar (127), Anil Biswas (120), Bappi Lahiri (112), Rajesh Roshan (111), Salil Chaudhary (109), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), and Vasant Desai (104). Hullo Atuldom
Today we are remembering a celebrity who began his life as a Professor of Civil Engineering in a Mumbai engineering college. A huge fan of Dilip Kumar, he was spotted by comedian Agha when he was performing in a play “Taash ke Pattey”. The play was recommended to Dilip saab who saw it, and signed this Professor/ stage actor for “Sagina” and “Bairaag”. This was the start of a career that spanned from the ’70s to 2019 – Govinda starrer Rangeela Raja released in 2019.
This post is about Kadar Khan who was born in Kabul to Afghan parents. He was educated in Mumbai and graduated as a civil engineer. His career as a writer in Bollywood took off when he was offered to co-write the script of “Jawaani Diwaani” by Narinder Bedi. This was followed by dialogue, script writing for over 200 films in addition to acting in around 300.
I am unable to decide if he was a better actor or writer. I am unable to decide if he evoked more emotion in the public as a villain or comic character actor. I am in love with his pairing with Govinda in both serious and comic roles. There are many movies to choose from where they have showcased their comic timing but that does not mean that they couldn’t emote serious situations. They have played grandfather -grandson in “Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni”, father-n-son in “Haseena Maan Jaayegi”, “Sindoor”; father-in law son-in-law in “Dulhe Raja”. I don’t know if David Dhawan brought out the best in them. But it is to Rajesh Khanna’s credit that Manmohan Desai paid Kadar Khan handsomely for writing the dialogues of “Roti” in 1974.
I loved him as the lovable old man in “Gharwali Baharwali”, “Saajan Chale Sasural”, “Mr & Mrs Khiladi”. He was cute as the outwardly-submissive husband of Bindu in “Biwi Ho To Aisi”. He played a similar character with Shashikala as his wife in “Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani” (1988). He has played serious characters too as in “Yaarana”, “Adalat”, “Roti”, “Tohfa”- there is a whole list of such films.
He has had a few songs picturized on him in his long and illustrious career. Some have been philosophical and some have been funny. He has also tried to dance in some of these songs and it used to be rather cute to see.
In today’s song too, we see Kadar Khan play a slightly old character who is frustrated by the presence of a “Dhaaba” in the premises of his five star hotel. He has tried all possible tactics to evict the dhabbawala. The competition in the song is one such attempt.
This song is written by Sameer and Anand- Milind are the music composers. It is sung by Vinod Rathod and Sonu Nigam. The song has a lot of well-known couplets strung together rather imaginatively and that had made it appealing to the younger generation of that period. Besides being a song from my own ‘list of loved songs’ it also belonged to my dad’s list. He must have seen this movie every time it came on television and so have I. I am sure that the song was inspired by the song from “Padosan”- “ek chatur naar” going by the way the characters are emoting- all over the top.
The movie had Raveena Tandon as his daughter and Johnny Lever played Kadar Khan’s Man-Friday who is in cahoots with the dhabbawala -Govinda- who feels that he should be the “Dulhe Raja” of the hotel owner Singhania -played by Kadar Khan.
“Dulhe Raja” released on 10th July 1998. This was one of the 13 films that released in 1998 with Kadar Khan in the cast, he was definitely a busy 60-year old in that year.

Hullo Atuldom
In one of his recent posts our Avinash ji has suggested that there should be a category of posts – ‘Post inspired by fellow Atulite’ or ‘Post inspired by Atulite WA group chat’. I would like to borrow a phrase from Sudhir ji ‘thank you for the nudge’ and direct it towards Avinash ji. If not for Avinash ji I would have written this post a month later. Don’t know how I mixed up dates. And there have been posts wherein Atul ji has credited me with being good at remembering dates. It is not so Atul ji, calendars also need reminders.
I am 100% sure that the followers of this blog and non-followers too will be aware of a movie that released in the 70s. 1975 to be exact. It went by the name ‘Sholay’. It was a multi-star-cast movie that ran for years in a single cinema hall in Mumbai. This blog has already covered each and every song possible from that movie with detailed posts accompanying them. I am sure, the readers are wondering, why I am revisiting the movie then? Well ‘Sholay’ is something like an ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977) or any other formula movie. ‘AAA’ had a lost-and-found formula which was repeated in many movies after it. ‘AAA’ itself was a copy of numerous movies preceding it with the lost-and-found theme. It can be safely said that Indian movies thrive as much on the stories of the Ramayan and Mahabharata as they do on the lost-and-found theme.
So, where does ‘Sholay’ fit, in the scheme of things? Well, the ‘Thakur-Dacoit-Hired help’ formula has been repeated in a few movies too. Personally I have seen three movies on that story-line, there may be more. Two of them had a female for Thakur. That is, someone out to avenge the injustice meted out to her assisted by guys – ladies were SUPPOSED to be naajuk, bebas, etc. and a widow to add masala to the story. I am sure a woman of the new millennium will protest at the description of bebas, naajuk – even I will protest. There were Basanti and Radha as love interests in ‘Sholay’ – all the remakes also had ladies to distract the Veeru and Jai of the remakes.
Yesterday I saw ‘Army’ which had released on 28th June 1996 i.e. exactly 8 days short of 24 years ago. It was directed by Raam Shetty, produced by Nitin Manmohan and Mukul Anand and had music by Anand Milind. This is one of the ‘Sholay’ remakes that I spoke of in the previous paragraph. It has Sridevi playing a pregnant widow out to avenge her husband’s death for which she takes the help of five prisoners who are on the death-row. I hope the ‘Sholay’-connect has been explained. Explaining further- there it is two prisoners, here it is five. There the prisoners escape hoodwinking the ‘Angrezon ke zaamane ka Jailor‘; here Sridevi helps the prisoners get out of prison using sleep-inducing sweets. In ‘Sholay’; the thakur’s house was on a hillock overlooking the village, even that was replicated in ‘Army’. The prisoner’s are holed up in a secluded house that overlooks the area adjoining the palace of Sridevi’s tormentor. This was then the background of the movie from which I am presenting a song to our today’s birthday boy.
Coming back to the thoughts expressed in the opening paragraph, I asked Avinash ji if he was aware of the favourites of our today’s birthday boy. Favourite actor, singer, music director etc. Both of us thought hard and found that we don’t know much about his favourites but he knows all of us fairly well. What I do know, he has a ‘more than’ good knowledge about cricket and movies. He loves his pets and they are the family that live with him as his wife is working in a different town and daughter is a student elsewhere. Of late I have discovered that he has a love for the progresses that the country has made in the various sectors post the ’98 Pokharan tests. He is proud to be employed in the biggest service provider of the nation.
In addition to all that he has a unique sense of humor, which surfaces often on the blog in his posts and is given the title “Atulism” by our very own Rajaji.
Its is the birthday of the brain behind this blog, our Ranchiwala Gaanewala (Sudhir ji’s title for him). Wish you a very Happy Birthday Atul ji from your Army of contributors. We wish you all the best with lots of fun and music.
Today’s song is a lively song where the prisoners are having a party-like song and dance before escaping from the prison. It is sung by Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet and Vinod rathod. The two male singers are playback for Ravi Kishan. Ronit Roy, Sudesh Berry, Mohnish Behl and Harish who feed the jailor Kiran Kumar a laddo during the song and the favour is returned by the jailor. So when the song ends the rest of Sridevi’s Army have to bodily carry him out of the prison. It was an entertaining movie but becomes too violent towards the end. Whatever gory violence was snipped out of ‘Sholay’ found itself here.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 12

What we have today is a repeat song of a very familiar and a very wonderful hit of its time, and yes, an all time favorite that seems to carry a timeless appeal for people in love. And as is shown on screen, people in love – of all ages. This reuse has some very interesting circumstances, mostly well evident in the picturization itself.
The original song is from the hit film ‘Khel Khel Mein’ from 1975. The lead pair in that film is Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who were famously in love off the celluloid also. They were referred to as the ‘Love Birds’ of the Hindi cinema. Their affair culminated in their tying the proverbial matrimonial knot in 1980. ‘Khel Khel Mein’ was possibly their second film together, having worked together earlier for the first time together, in ‘Zehreela Insaan’ in 1974. The original song is performed on screen by this pair, playing roles of college students in love, and in search of fun and adventure through petty pranks. On screen, the scenario is that both are drunk, and have got it into their minds to announce their love for each other to the world through this song. The original song is written by Gulshan Baawra and the music is by RD Burman.
The repeat song is from the 2005 film – ‘Pyaar Mein Twist’. The lead roles in this film are played by Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. Seeing this pair on screen brought back memories of many a story, all the way back from three decades ago.
Rewind back to 1973. Rishi and Dimple make their individual debuts as lead players in ‘Bobby’, a teen romance that straddles two diverse strata of the society as well as religious affiliations. The film was the big hit of 1973, that revived the fortunes of RK banner after the box office debacle of ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). The release of this film was preceded, and accompanied by a ton of controversies that had the pulp press working overtime for months on end. An uncanny facial resemblance (at that point in time) between Dimple and Nargis of ‘Barsaat’ (1949), created a havoc laden rumor tornado – that Dimple is actually Raj Kapoor’s daughter from his alleged affair with Nargis when the two were a popular and fantastic pair on screen, and off it, in late 1940s to mid 1950s. Of course the rumor was really preposterous; given the dates and timelines of years. But the smut press was really having a great time. Then another storm of rumor was thrown into this mix – that of an off screen affair between Rishi and Dimple. This was even more flabbergasting – as evidenced by the fact that Rishi – fondly called Chintu Baba, would soon be entangled with Neetu Singh, in a relationship that has lasted a life time. The rumor simply refused to die for weeks on end, despite strong denial statements by all parties concerned.
And then, even before the film ‘Bobby’ was formally released, there came another thunderous event that really complicated the already horrendous mess. Totally out of the blue, the marriage of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia was announced. Rajesh Khanna was riding a great popularity wave as the superstar of the decade. The decision raised many an eyebrow, all the way to the sky, given that Rajesh Khanna was already in an almost live-in relationship with the small time actress Anju Mahendru. Couple that with the immediate announcement of Dimple’s retirement from the film industry. Goodness, the amount of dirty gossip raised by all these eventualities, was really getting out of hand. To a right thinking person, all the gossip was incredulous and unbelievable, at that time. It would serve no purpose to regurgitate it. And then, in some months’ time, as the controversies appeared to have lived out their usefulness, the box office success of ‘Bobby’ created another gossip storm – that all the controversies and their public discourse associated with Dimple – all the rumor rot was just a marketing ploy to create a box office success for ‘Bobby’. It took almost a year for the storm to die down.
Fast forward now to 1982. The long brewing trouble in the Rajesh-Dimple marriage came to a head, with Dimple leaving the matrimonial home with her two daughters, never to return again. After a cooling period of a year or so, the news emerged about the much awaited return of Dimple to the films. One of the first films that she signed up for was ‘Saagar’ (1985), opposite to Rishi Kapoor once again. The film was delayed by almost a year – in normal course it would have hit the theatres in 1984. Other films starring Dimple got released earlier.
Over the years, this pair has appeared on screen together with an infrequent regularity – ‘Allah Rakha’ in 1986, then on to ‘Ajooba’ and ‘Ranbhoomi’ in 1991. Then in 2005, after another gap of 14 years, came ‘Pyaar Mein Twist’, the film under discussion today. The two actors have appeared together in two more films since then – ‘Luck By Chance’ in 2009 and then ‘Patiala House’ in 2011.
‘Pyaar Mein Twist’ is a romantic comedy underlining a serious subject of mature age romance between two single parents, Yash (role played by Rishi Kapoor) and Sheetal (role played by Dimple Kapadia), both having a flourishing household each of them is responsible for. And yet, Cupid does not spare them from romantic entanglement, leading to a major social upset in the two families. However, with the support of a benevolent aunt (Toshi Auntie – role played by Farida Jalaal) and a supporting future son-in-law (Sanju – role played by Sameer Dattani), all ends well for all parties concerned. The ending sequence shows Yash performing the kanyadaan ceremony at the wedding of Sheetal’s daughter, topped off with a happy smiling family group photo shoot.
The reused song is actually not the real original. It has been re-recorded in different voices for the purpose of this film. It is a duet – but now it is a male-male duet. The original is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. The repeat version is sung by Babul Supriyo and Vinod Rathod. On screen, it is performed by Yash and his childhood friend Khanna (role played by Satish Shah). The scene is a marriage anniversary party of Khanna. Yash, after a few pegs down his belt, decides to make a public proclamation of his love for Sheetal – much to her visible surprise and suppressed delight.
One query for the more knowledgeable readers – please help to identify the lady in the red saaree standing next to Dimple in this song. She plays the role of Satish Shah’s wife in this film. I have seen her in a couple of other contemporaneous films, but cannot recall her name.
The song starts off with the opening lines of another iconic hit of Rishi Kapoor – the song “Meri Umar Ke Naujawaanon. . . – To Gaao Om Shanti Om”, in his own voice, and then it leads into the lines “Khullam Khulla. . .”. Of the original three stanza song, only two stanzas have been used in repeat version.
So check out this modern day avataar of an iconic song from the 1970s, which is performed on screen by the same actor – thirty years apart. This must be a record of sorts, after considering WM Khan’s performance of the primeval “De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe. . .” in the three versions of the film ‘Alam Ara’ – 1931, 1956 and 1973.

Happy Holi!
Some movies have a lot of memories attached to them. Yash Chopra’s “Chaandni” is one such movie. The year was 1989 and I had been to Mumbai (maayka) for my delivery. So, I had a lot of free time when I could interact with all my friends and neighbours like never before (and never have I had a similar opportunity too) 😉 that made that visit to Mumbai special. For those Atulites who know me- I had shifted out of Mumbai post marriage and so the term “visit to Mumbai”.
Getting back to “Chaandni” – those were the days when there were VCRs in many home and people used to rent Video Cassettes of movies which they couldn’t see in the theatres. I have seen a few movies in that way in the company of my neighbour’s family and more importantly their son. Their son was a year or two older to me so he was a mentor, guide, friend, idol and so many other things for me. To start off (as was the norm in those times) he was my Rakhi bro but we had a different equation between the two of us. He being my idol – I started liking Rekha- his favourite and he, on his part, made an effort to like Amitabh because he doted on me. Whatever love I have for physics, all branches of mathematics, and history is because I followed his way of studying them.
Oh, I again went away from Chaandni- so “Parinda” and “Chaandni” were the two movies the two of us saw back-to-back. “Chaandni” was a typical triangular love story. To start of it is a simple love story where the girl- Chaandni (Sridevi)- is wooed not-so-easily by the guy- Rohit (Rishi Kapoor). But the guys’ family has an issue with the alliance but accept it because their ‘only’ son is adamant. They go ahead have an engagement etc. But unfortunately, Rohit meets with an accident and is bound to a wheel chair. His family decides that this is the best time to humiliate the girl and so Rohit is forced to break-off the engagement so that the girl doesn’t have to face his family’s behaviour.
Now what does the girl do? She leaves Delhi, comes to Mumbai and lands a job in Lalit’s (Vinod Khanna) office. He is already pining for his dead wife when he falls in love with her, she takes some time to reciprocate though she is always civil to him and his mother. The next twist in the story comes when Lalit meets Rohit in Switzerland, where he has gone for business and Rohit has come for treatment. They become friends and decide that on returning to India they will introduce their respective girl friends and also marry on the same day etc. Isn’t that enough to twist the story further and make it a triangle?

This will be the 7th song from “Chaandni” which had Shiv-Hari as music directors and Anand Bakshi as lyricist. I cannot keep myself from saying: Sridevi looks so pretty and baby-like in this song, actually she looks like a baby through the movie. This song is shot on the streets of Delhi or New Delhi. I would like it if the Dilliwale followers of the blog help in identifying the locations. It will be nice to know. 🙂
This song is also in memory of the aforementioned friend who loved to ape Rishi Kapoor and his sunglasses and sweaters. This friend was also a Dilliwala for a brief period of his life.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Todays’ song has Anand Bakshi and Anand Milind get together to give the movie goers Anand (joy!). it is from a movie which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for GP Sippy’s production – ‘Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate’ (1998). The movie stars Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo and Sajid Khan.
The screenplay for thid movie is written by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Sachin Bhowmick, based on a story by Bimal Kar. It has a lot of inspiration from many of Hrishida’s earlier successful movies. Remember “shifting pain” in ‘Anand’ (1970) – well the character of Shankar’s (Anil Kapoor) bhabhi has “shifting pain” in her knee. Remember “mooche mundawana” in ‘Golmaal’ (1979)? Here Shankar has to cut his hair “baal mundwana”. Remember the strict Jija ji who used to judge a person “soongh ke”; here we have a father (Amrish Puri) who has similar powers. Then we had David in ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975) who was in tandem with the pranksters; here we had a mamma (Anupam Kher). And also, there is a passing reference to the joke about identical twins (Golmaal) and Amrish Puri (who is called Bhayankar behind his back) goes- “Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh Wah Wah!!” I know all this about the movie as I have seen it a few times on TV of course. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are many songs in the movie which are good.
There was a song in Hrishida’s “Naram Garam’ (1981) which had a girl ask her chacha (Shatrughan Sinha) to get ready for a wedding. Today’s song has a bhaanji (Juhi Chawla) asking her mamma why he was still a bachelor. The song is sung by Vinod Rathod and Alka Yagnik. This song is similar in thought with what I had presented a few days back- a bachelor loving his bachelorhood. 🙂
Any idea why this song and movie today? Well it was the last movie to be directed by the Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He returned to direction of films after a gap of 10 years.
Starting his life as teacher of mathematics and science before venturing into filmdom as a cameraman and then an assistant film editor in the late 40s, in Calcutta (now Kolkata) he went on to work with Bimal Roy as film editor and assistant director in movie like ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ and ‘Devdas’. He debuted as director with ‘Musafir’ in 1957 and followed it up with movies that are a class in themselves – ‘Anari’, ‘Anuradha’, ‘Chhaya’, ‘Asli Naqli’, and the list goes on to include a few movies that gave Dharmendra his first comedy – ‘Chupke Chupke’; Amitabh his big break in ‘Anand’; introduced Jaya Bhaduri to Bollywood – ‘Guddi’. I am not a critique of his work, I am a fan. I might have seen all the movies he made in the late 70s through to the 80s. so when ‘Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate’ released I saw that too but not in the cinema hall as the movie had a poor audience reception. But the songs of the movie keep replaying in my head.
Here is one to remember Hrishida on his birth anniversary.

Continuing on my series of articles on some of the offbeat films (also called parallel or middle cinemas), I have taken up for discussion an NDFC promoted film ‘Thhoda Saa Roomaani Ho Jaaye’ (1990). The film was produced and directed by Amol Palekar. The main roles were played by Nana Patekar, Anita Kanwar and Vikram Gokhale with actors like Banwari Taneja, Dilip Kulkarni, Riju Bajaj, Arun Joglekar and Deepa Lagoo donning the supporting roles. The film was extensively shot in and around Pachmadi in Madhya Pradesh. The film was critically acclaimed but flopped miserably on the box office. I get an impression from the films clips in two parts available on YT that the it was later released on Doordarshan.

“Chaandni” (1989) was a Yashraj Pictures production. It was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. The movie had Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Sridevi, Bharat Bhushan, Juhi Chawla, Sridevi, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Anupam Kher, Beena, Renu Arya, Mita Vashist, Manju Maini, Asha Sharma, Anant Mahadevan, Ram Gopal Bajaj, Shyam Arora, Manohar Singh, Achala Sachdev, Lalit Tiwari, Suhas Joshi, Ram Maini, Idris Malik, etc in it.
