‘Chaar Darvesh’ (1964) was produced and directed by Homi Wadia under the banner of Basant Pictures and Wadia Brothers. The star cast included Feroz Khan, Sayeeda Khan, Naaz, Ratnamala, Jeevankala, Amarnath, Mukri, W M Khan, Sundar, Paul Sharma, B M Vyas, Sardar Mansoor, Dalpat, Nazir Kashmiri, Paro etc. The film belonged to ‘costume and fantasy’ genre.

Sometime watching the films on a video sharing platform as recently as possible gives a better watching experience because someone would upload a better-quality version of the video films. Among the many ‘B’ grade films, mostly of 1960s, which I have recently watched, ‘Chaar Darvesh’ is the only film which has not only a good audio-video quality but also has a fast-paced screenplay. Despite the story of film being a familiar royal family feuds with magic playing the key role, the film is interesting to watch because of the excellent performance of a young-looking Feroz Khan, the grandeur of sets, the colourful costumes, some trick photography and the melodious songs.

The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with three darvesh (more like ascetic) gathered in a dargah (shrine) praying for their wishes to be fulfilled. One is seeking to have a boy as his successor. Another one is longing to meet his lost sweetheart, and the last one is seeking to retrieve the lost treasure of his owner. But their wishes cannot be fulfilled unless a fourth darvesh joins them. The fourth darvesh does come riding on his horse with a dog. His name is Qamar (Feroz Khan) with blackened face. When one of he darvesh asks him as to why his face is blackened, Qamar starts telling his life story.

Qamar’s father was an army commander of King Ali Jaan (W M Khan). After his father’s death, his two brothers – Karim (Sundar) and Rahim (Azim) confiscated his inheritance making Qamar to face poverty. He became vagabond. His brothers, Karim and Rahim are soldiers protecting the palace of King Ali Jaan. One day, while roaming around the palace, Qamar notices some soldiers making fun of a woman. Qamar fights with them to relieve the woman from their harassment. More soldiers led by Sipahsalar Yusuf Baig (Amarnath) pour in forcing Qamar to run away from them. He accidentally lands in the women’s bathing pool of the palace where Princess Nargis (Sayeeda Khan) is taking a bath. Nargis is shocked to see a male in the pool. Yusuf Baig takes Qamar in the custody and is about to kill him when Nargis orders to present him before her father, King Ali Jaan on the next day who would announce punishment for him. This gives an indication to Qamar that Nargis has a soft corner for him. In the night, he loosened himself from the custody and barges into Nargis’s bedroom in the night in the pretext of picking up his lost cap. This time, his meeting with Nargis ignites liking for each other. Once again, he is recaptured by Yusuf Baig who is also eyeing Nargis to be his wife.

Next day, Qamar is presented before the King Ali who sentences him to a life imprisonment in a remote island. While he is being taken on a boat to the island, Karim and Rahim throw Qamar in the mid sea so that he is not alive to claim the inheritance. They also dump the captain, Masah Allah (Mukri) of the boat to destroy the evidence. However, Both survives and climb on a rock in the mid-sea. As soon as they reach on the top of the rock, the entire rock submerges into the deep sea, taking them to the undersea kingdom of Maakaar (B M Vyas), a magician who has learnt magic under the guidance of Marjina (Ratnamala). She is not happy with Maakaar for misusing her magic power he has inherited from her. On the contrary, with magic power, he has turned Marjina into a stone except her head to neck part.

After overcoming various obstacles on their path, Qamar and Masah Allah reach the palace. Qamar sees from distance Princess Hameeda (Naaz) with a woman who is partly turned stone. Obviously she is Marjina. Hameeda is under the captivity of Maakaar, but he cannot touch her because of a magical condition put forth by Marjina that the moment he touches Hameeda without her consent, he would forget his magic power. So, he uses her only for his entertainment. During his one of the dance entertainments, Qamar and Masah Allah encounter Maakaar who is trying to catch them but in vain. He, therefore, uses his magic lamp through which he invokes Ginnie (Paul Sharma). However, before he can kill them, Qamar picks up the magic lamp and escapes with it and with Masah Allah out of the under-sea kingdom of Maakaar.

Qamar and Masah Allah reach the shore of the sea. Qamar, through the magic lamp, invokes Ginnie to bring back Hameeda. But he declines by saying that he is not allowed to touch a woman. Next day, as desired by Qamar, Gennie converts Qamar as the Prince of Khorasan and Masah Allah as his Vazir (Minister). They reach the King Ali’s court who is happy to receive them as King of Khorasan is his friend. The King Ali proposes the marriage of his daughter, Nargis to the Prince of Khorasan. But Nargis is not happy because she has already given her heart to Qamar. However, truth comes out when the Prince of Khorasan reveals his real identity as Qamar. Nargis is happy. They meet quite often, and she even convey to her father that she is prepared to marry Prince Khorasan.

Once, Yusuf Baig sees Khorasan coming out of Prince Nargis private chamber as Qamar. He reports this to the King who feels cheated. His explanation for the disguise is not accepted despite his revelation that King’s younger daughter, Hameeda is alive and is in the custody of Maakaar. King sentences him to death. At that very moment, Prince Nargis announces that she will marry a person who brings Prince Hameeda safely to the kingdom. With this announcement, Qamar escapes from the kingdom and goes back to the under-sea kingdom of Maakaar to bring back Hameeda. But this time the task is not simple for Qamar as he has lost his magic lamp and Maakaar has acquired a new magic power through a magic ring by which he can be out of Marjina’s magical spell which prevented him touching Hameeda.

Qamar challenges Maakaar by telling him that he has returned to his under-sea kingdom to take back Hameeda. With his magic power, Maakaar is able to control Qamar. But Marjina’s magic facilitates him to escape with Hameeda with a condition that he has to marry her. If he marries any other girl, that girl would die. Against his own conscious, he has to agree to that condition to save Hameeda. Qamar reaches the Kingdom and presents Hameeda before the King Ali. Both the King and Nargis are happy to see Hameeda alive. As per Nargis’s earlier announcement, King agrees to get Nargis marry Qamar. Qamar is in a quandary. If he marries Nargis, he will invite the wrath of Marjina and she will die. So, he reveals the reason to King as to why he cannot marry Nargis. Hameeda who has also started loving Qamar for saving her from Maakaar is also in confusion. Qamar leaves the palace by telling both Nargis and Hameeda that he would spend rest of his life in a dargah as darvesh.

Since Qamar has revealed the reason for not marrying Nargis, Marjina is angry. As a punishment, she turns Qamar into a charcoal black complexion. On his way to dargah, people throw stones at him thinking him to be a weird man. With the help of his dog, he reaches the dargah where the peer tells him that there are three darvesh waiting for him in a different dargah after which the wishes of all four darvesh will be fulfilled. Peer advises him to proceed to that dargah at once which he does. With this, Qamar completes his life story to other three darvesh as to why he has turned into black complexion.

Suddenly, Marjina appears at the dargah and tells Qamar that she is pleased with him for his dedication towards his beloved as well as saving Hameeda. She guides other three darvesh which helps them to get their wishes fulfilled. As to Qamar, she reveals that the magic lamp which he had lost has landed in the hands of Yusuf Baig on the strength of which he has made King Ali a sickly person and has grabbed the Kingdom. He has planned his grand marriage with Nargis. With this forecast, Marjina turns Qamar into a royal attire and gives a magic box containing powder which will help him in his pursuit to stop the marriage of Nargis with Yusuf Baig.

With boons from Marjina, Qamar storms into the palace, creating an illusion of thousands of his troops through the sprinkling of magic powder. Yusuf Baig with the help of his magic lamp escapes from the palace with Nargis on a flying magic carpet. Qamar holds on the magic carpet and climbs on it to fight with Yusuf Baig. During the fight, he loses his magic lamp. Yusuf Baig falls down from the carpet into a deep valley. Qamar and Nargis arrive at the palace to the delight of Hameeda.

The film had six songs written by Anjaan (2), Raja Mehdi Ali Khan (2) and Saba Fazli (2) which were set to music by G S Kohli. Five Songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 6th and the last song from the film, ‘kaalee kaalee aankhon mein chamak gayee bijlee’ written by Anjaan and rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Naaz (Princess Hameeda). B M Vyas, Feroz Khan and Mukri among others are seen during the picturisation of the song.

Princess Hameeda (Naaz) is in the captivity of Maakaar (B M Vyas). Qamar (Feroz Khan) and Masah Allah (Mukri) has accidentally come to Maakaar’s under-sea palace. Both see Hameeda and her mother, Marjina (Ratnamala) from a distance. Though Hameeda is under Maakaar,’s control, he cannot touch her because of a magical condition put forth by Marjina that the moment he touches Hameeda without her consent, he would forget his magic power. So, he uses her only for his entertainment such as this dance song.

With this song, all the songs of ‘Chaar Darvesh’ (1964) have been covered on the Blog.
