‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 5
———————————————————
Welcome all to today’s post which is coming after a long gap of more than two years. In this series we discussed song by ‘Pancham-Rafi’ jodi. This series was basically inspired by an article on the blog ‘Pancham and Only Pancham’ – and the title of the article is ‘Tribute to Rafi Sahab on 28th Death Anniversary‘, published on Rafi Sb’s twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ on 31.07.2008. This article lists out the ‘variety of songs by the genius -Pancham-Rafi’ jodi based on different ‘genres’ of music.
When I came across the above article I thought to share this list with readers on our blog too. So, when I started this series in ‘2015’ with this song – “Jaag Devta Naag Devta“ – nine out of the twenty songs listed in the article were already posted on the blog. After that, I shared three more songs viz. – “Raqqaasa Mera Naam, Ae Sahib Sabko Salaam“, “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” and “Maakhan Chor Nandkishore Manmohan Ghanshyam Re“. The remaining songs were shared by our team members from time to time, and all these twenty songs are on the blog now.
Readers can go through the list in the article mentioned above. As the songs in this list were already getting posted on the blog, I had in the post for the song “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” mentioned that I will include some more songs in this series, not on the basis of music-genres, but these ‘special songs’ are from the category of being ‘the only Rafi song in a movie where music was composed by RD Burman.
Today’s song is one such song and it is from the movie ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980).
This film was directed by Danny Dengzongpa for Prithvi Pictures, Bombay. The star cast includes Rajesh Khanna, Kim (new discovery), Shashikala, AK Hangal, Suresh Oberoi, Lalita Pawar, Tamanna, Aruna Irani, Danny Dengzongpa, Om Shivpuri, Shobha Khote, Jagdeep, Mukri, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Madhu Malhotra, Shashi Kiran, Manmauji, Prakash, Lalita Kumari, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ranjeet Sood, Jugnu, Chand Usmani, Moolchand, Gopal Saigal, Master Chirag and others.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980 with restricted viewing (Adults Only) certificate.
This movie had six songs, all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed to music by RD Burman. Here is the list of the songs of this movie,

Today’s song, the only Rafi song, in this movie is lip-synced on screen by actor Jagdeep.
Today 29th March 2021 is eighty-second birth anniversary (born on 29.03.1939) of actor Jagdeep. He passed away last year on 08th July 2020. As a tribute to him we will listen and enjoy this entertaining song from this movie. The song is ‘joie-de-vivre’ where other than Jagdeep we can see Mohan Choti, Bhagwan, Mukri, Birbal, Gopal Saigal and others also performing with him.
Also wishing herewith is ‘Happy Holi’ to all. Though the song is not a ‘holi’ song but ‘holi’ celebrations can be enjoyed this year ‘in house’ only – with playing this song and ‘taking a jig’ on this vibrant Pancham composition.

Remembrance day of Mukri :
Mukri also spelled as Muqri was an Indian film actor, who worked as a comedian in Hindi films. Born as Muhammad Umar Mukri in Alibagh, in Kokani Muslim Family, he started his film career with the film Pratima along with noted film actor Dilip Kumar in 1945. Born of 5th January 1922, he left for heavenly abode on 4th September’2000 at the age of 72 years.
Mukri was seen in many films in character roles and comic role. One movie which comes to mind in ‘Ram aur Shyam”. Here also he featured with Dilip Kumar as his friend.
Today is the 20th death anniversary, so as a tribute, I have found a wonderful comic song picturized on Mukri and Mehmood. The film is ‘Madhavi’(1969), with Laxmikant –Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi as music director and lyricist. The movie had very good songs, I hear. This is the only Rafi song picturized on Mukri which remained to be posted, going by the information is Rafi sahab’s excel sheet. I expect, Mukri may not be as prolific as Mehmood, Johhny Walker or Agha. So there are most likely fewer songs where he actually sings. In this song Manna De is giving playback for Mehmood and Rafi Sahab is singing for Mukri. Now, in the absence of song video, how can I be certain of this ? I have searched on youtube, though the movie “Madhavi” is available, video of only one song is there. All other songs, only audio is available, including the song being posted. Actually, on closer inspection, there are voices of both Mehmood and Mukri are there is the song along with the singers. This is a comic song in real terms, maybe a rip-off on “Padosan” songs.
It was my husband who confirmed the playback for Mehmood and Mukri. As I was noting the lyrics this evening, he asked from where I had found this song from ‘Madhavi”. This is not a known song for me, but may husband knows the songs of this film very well.
The name did ring a bell that I had contributed the lyrics of Lata solo of the two songs posted :
parda hata de mukhda dikha de
saanjh sawere adharon pe mere
My husband also helpfully given the story outline of this costume drama film of Kings, Princes and Princesses. Sanjay Khan is a prince and Deepa, in title role of Madhavi, is a princess. Mehmood and Mukri are all part of the Sanjay Khan’s entourage. This songs is performed on stage. Pran is the Senapati of Sanjay Khan, and he has this dialogue as his ‘takiya kalaam” :
“Shaadi karungaa to sirf madhavi se, warna maut se !”

“Qaidi No 911″(1959) had six songs in it. Four songs (including a multiple version song) have been covered in the blog.
Here are the details of the songs from this movie that have been covered so far:-

Pyaar bhari ye ghataayen | 9-May-2010 |
Tere teer ko hamne pyaar se dil mein rakh liyaa | 2-Jan-2012 |
Latching on to this Blog Ten year Challenge opportunity, Prakashchandra has sent me the lyrics of a song from “Qaidi No 911″(1959). this song is sung by Lata. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dattaram.
The song is picturised as a roadside tamasha dance song on the beach of Chaupati I guess. Mukri is trying to attract customers for his bioscope, but the potential customers get diverted to watch the dance performance of Nanda. 🙂
The picturistion is somewhat reminiscent of “Don”(198) song,“Ee hai Bambai nagariya tu dekh babua”.

Today’s song is from the musical blockbuster of the 1950s, Suvarna Sundari-58.
There was a love affair going on between the South films and Bombay Film industry during the 50’s decade. Right from film Chandralekha-48, South started pushing into Hindi domain with Remakes and Dubbed southern films. Some films were even made only in Hindi. As the years went by and the southern film market expanded greater than even Bombay, south had no time or need or interest in tapping the Hindi belt anymore.
With the films being made by the South for the Hindi audience, came many southern composers too. Chandralekha-48- had S.Rajeshwar Rao as MD, then came Parthasarthy and kalla (Nishan-49, Mangala-50 and Sansar-51), Sankar Sastry (Mangala, Sansar), C S Ram (Lavangi-50), C R Subbaraman (Ek the Raja-51, Chandi Rani-53), Vishwanathan and R Sudarshana (Ladki-53), S V Venkatraman and T R Ramanathan(Manohar-54), Ram Murthy(Naya Aadmi-56) etc etc.
First Hindi Music Director in a south film Hindi was Bulo C Rani, with C S Ram in film Lavangi-50. The first south Hindi film whose entire music was done by a single Music Director from the Hindi belt was Bahar-51- S D Burman. After this C.Ramchandra, Chitragupta, Madan Mohan, Shankar-jaikishen, N Dutta and others started crowding in south for Hindi films and due to this the influx of south composers for Hindi films almost came to a naught.
Many Hindi composers are known to invade South and make songs in their languages. The first one to do so was C Ramchandra, but then few others like Naushad( for Tamil version of Aan and Mughal E Azam), Salil Chaudhari ( for many Tamil and Malyalam films), Ravi- who became famous in Kerala as Bombay Ravi, for many Malyalam films and few more. However, there was only one south composer who gave music to a Hindi film and made it a Hit Jubilee Musical Blockbuster. He was Adi Narayana Rao and his first Hindi film was Suvarna Sundari-1958. I said First film, because Rao gave music to some more Hindi films later, like Phoolon ki sej-64, Jadoo nagari-72, Gun Fighter Johnny-72, Sati anusuya-74 and Inqilab Zindabad-75. he also gave music to a Dubbed Marathi film ‘ Mahabhakta Tukaram’-60.
His first film was Suvarna Sundari-58 and what Grand music he gave ! The film had 14 songs and from Ghantasala’s ” Laxmi kshir Samudra Raj’ to Sudha Malhotra’s ” Hat jaa re natkhat”, he displayed his originality, creativity and knowledge of Hindustani Raagdari too ! He composed songs in various Raagas like, malkauns, Sohni, Bahar, Jaunpuri, Hameer etc . Songs like ” Mujhe na bula” and ” Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya” are popular even today and surely can be counted amongst the most memorable of Hindi songs ever.
Born in 1915 in Andhra Pradesh, Rao learnt music from Pt. Sitaram Sastry. He was active on stage for many years. He was an excellent Harmonium player. Surprisingly, he entered film world as a writer and not a musician. Later, he became an assistant to composer Chittur Nagiah from film vande Mataram-1939. His first film as a MD was Vardhini-1946. Along with Folk tunes, Rao used Spanish tunes in his songs. He married actress Anjali Devi, after film Suvarn Sundari in Telugu was released. They started Anjali pictures, a film production company. While he could not get success in Hindi films, after Suvarn Sundari-58, his wife Anjali Devi continued doing roles in Hindi films for many more years. Adi Narayana Rao died on 25-1-1990.
The original Telugu film Suvarn Sundari was made with A.Nageshwar Rao and Anjali Devi in 1957. Tamil version was also made Simultaneously, with Gemini Ganesan and Anjali devi in the lead. Tamil film title was Manaalane Mangaiyi Bakkiyam. The Tamil version was released first. When both Tamil and Telugu films became Hit and Blockbusters, it was planned to dub the Tamil film in Hindi. Lata Mangeshkar was called to Madras to record the songs. When Lata saw the film, she suggested them that instead of dubbing the film, the film may be remade in Hindi. The distributors too opined the same. Therefore the Hindi version was remade with A. Nageshwar Rao and Anjali Devi in the lead. This was the First and the only Hindi film A.Nageshwar Rao made ever in his entire career. The film was shot in Venus Studio, Madras and near Shimsha falls, Mysore. The Hindi film was very successful and celebrated Silver Jubilee in 18 cities.
All the three language versions were directed by Vedantam Raghaviah. He was born to V.Ramiah and Annapoornamma at Kuchipudi village in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, on 8-6-1919. from 5th year onwards, he started learning Kuchipudi dance and became a surprise item in many shows and stage dramas. At the age of 9 years he was married to his Maternal cousin. He entered films as an actor and Choreographer in 1937. But from 1949 he changed over to production and Direction. In next 20 years, he directed 30 Telugu and Tamil films plus 2 Hindi films- Suvarna Sundari-58 and Jadoo Nagari-72. His film Devdas-53 was considered as his Best film. He died at the age of only 52 years on 18-11-1971. He received several awards and honours as a Kuchipudi Dancer.
Out of the 14 songs of Suvarn Sundari-58, only 3 songs are discussed on the Blog. Today’s song is the 4th song. The video shows a song coupled with the naughty activities of comedians, small time Thugs in the film, Agha, Mukri and Radha Kishen. Radha Kishen was a comedian with a peculiar style of talking and speaking in a voice that distinguished him from others. I still remember his funny role in film ‘ New Delhi’-1956.
Radha Kishen (Mehra) was born on 13-6-1915 in Delhi. He was a good writer and wanted a job as a writer in films. V.Shantaram, however, offered him a job as an actor in Prabhat. His first role was that of a villain in film ‘ Padosi ‘-41. It was here that he became very friendly with writer Pt. Mukhram Sharma, who helped him by creating special roles for him in the scripts that he wrote. Radhakishen played the roles of a miser to perfection. He became a regular with P.L.Santoshi in films like Shehnai, Sargam, Apni Chhaya etc.
His biggest role as a comedian which brought him to limelight was in film New Delhi-56. He played important roles in Begunah and Naya Daur also. Changing over to comic villain’s role in Parvarish-58, he was equally effective. In Sadhana-58 he was a crafty neighbour and in Chhoti Behan-59, he was a greedy trader. Being a writer himself, he would get effective and ironic dialogues.
At the height of his career, he became a Producer with Amar Rahen ye pyar-61. Because of kavi Pradeep’s left wing songs, the film was held up by Censors for a long time and when finally it was released, it flopped miserably. Before that itself, due to heavy losses, mounting debts and a failed Love affair, Radhakishen committed suicide by jumping to death from the fourth floor terrace of his building, on 18th March 1960. He died after his film Ek ke baad ek-60 was completed. Its Producer Raj Rishi, who was his close friend, put an obituary message in the film’s credits as ” This picture is respectfully dedicated to the fond memories of my friend and great artiste Radhakishen, who is no more with us “.
Same year in May 1960, the well known Distributor Tarachand Barjatya announced a Trophy in the name of Radhakishen, to be given to the Best Comedian of the Year. This is probably the only Trophy of its type in the film industry.
Here is a comedy song video from the film Suvarna Sundari-58. Enjoy….

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 64# Singer – Kishore Kumar
———————————————–—————————-
In my opinion, Kishore Kumar’s voice reached a different and special plane altogether during late 1960s as compared to his voice prior to earlier years i.e. pre ‘Padosan'(1968) and ‘Aradhana’ (1969). He retained that “something special” in his voice for the rest of his career. His voice was at its ‘versatile peak’ during this phase of his career.
Kishore Kumar was popularly known as the voice of ‘Rajesh Khanna’ during 1970s, but he was also singing for most other actors, whether they were the established stars of the time or newcomers. Today’s song is one such special song. I became aware of this song only in September 2016.
It was during my stay at Nagpur that I had marked this song for presentation here on the blog. When I checked HFGK for this movie songs, I discovered that this song had two versions viz a ‘happy’ as well as ‘sad’. However, at that time only the sad version of this song was available, so I forwarded the movie link to my friend so that he could make the fast version of the song available in time for Holi of 2017. But somehow it did not materialize.
Later on, due to change in my job location it got further delayed. It was just about five weeks back that I requested our beloved Raja Saab to upload video of this song and he, as he always does, was kind enough to respond to my request and he has uploaded both the video versions of this song. (Thank you, Raja Saab, for the videos of both versions of this song). Meanwhile, I also discovered that audio of the ‘happy’ version was also available on YT.
This is a song celebrating ‘Holi’ – the festival of colors – and thus today on the occasion of ‘Holi’ let us enjoy this song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Andhera’.
‘Andhera’ was directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for their home production under the banner of Ramsay Films, Bombay. It was produced by F.U. Ramsay who also wrote the story of this movie. The star cast of this movie includes Sameer, Vani Ganpati, Surendra Kumar, Imtiaz, Helen, Satyen Kappu, Krishan Dhawan, Mukri, Dulari, Shekhar Purohit, Kumud Tripathi, Tuntun, Heeralal, Murad, Kukku, Arvind Pandya, Major Anand, Madhu, Habib, Moolchand, Seema Kapoor, Ashoo and others.
Dialogues for this movie were written by Kafeel Azar. Shyam Ramsay was the Chief Assistant Editor and Arjun Ramsay was the Associate Director. Editing was done by Bal Korde. Kumar Ramsay was the Executive Producer for this movie and he also wrote the screenplay of this movie.
This movie has four songs. Lyrics for all these songs are penned by Gulshan Bawra. Music for this movie is composed by Sonik-Omi. All the songs are solo songs; two by Kishore Kumar , and other two by Asha Bhonsle. Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it has two versions ‘happy’and ‘sad’ (or fast and slow 🙂 ). More than the fast version I like the slow version and its tune grows up on one as one listens to it repeatedly
Let us now enjoy this song!!! With this song, ‘Andhera’ (1975) makes its debut in the blog.
Wishing all readers and members of this blog a very happy, peaceful, safe and colorful Holi 2018 …!!!

Today, 25th of October 2017, is the thirty seventh ‘remembrance anniversary’ of the great ‘poet-lyricist’ Sahir Ludhianvi. He passed away this day in 1980 leaving behind the great legacy of his poems and leaving behind his immortal poetry which people are still enjoying, discussing, and even doing research on it and writing about his life and his poetry. And like me there will be many who will agree that Sahir and his poetry will be discussed as long as Hindi Cinema and HFM exists and his poetry will be discussed so long as humanity and human relations, emotions exists.

As I write out this post today, I have strong emotions attached to it.
It is a huge honour for me to write this post. I have to thank Atul for giving me the opportunity to do so.
Just a few days ago, Atul sent me an e-mail asking me if I could do a write-up for Kishore Kumar’s 1000th song on this blog. And of course, I immediately mailed back “Sure”. I wouldn’t miss this opportunity – it is indeed a very special occasion and a huge honour for me.
