‘Ek Sholaa’ (1958) was produced by Deep Khosla and Pradeep Kumar under the banner of Deep & Pradeep Productions and was directed by Chander Saigal. The cast included Pradeep Kumar and Mala Sinha in the lead roles supported by Nazir Hussain, Leela Mishra, Jawahar Kaul, Shubha Khote, Naaz, Dhumal. Tuntun, S K Prem, Narbada Shankar, Rajan Kapoor, Honey Irani etc.
Deep Khosla, writer-actor became a partner in Pradeep Kumar’s film production company under the banner, Deep and Pradeep Productions and produced its first film, ‘Ek Sholaa (1958) which went to the production sometime in 1956. Thereafter, the banner produced ‘Ek Jhalak’ (1957), ‘Police’ (1958) and ‘Do Dilon Kee Daastaan’ (1966). In between, their partnership ran into some problems because of trust deficits between Deep Khosla and Pradeep Kumar. It is stated that as a part of the settlement between the two partners, Pradeep Kumar acted free in ‘Batwaara’ (1961) which was produced under the banner of Deep and Sandeep Productions. Sandeep was the son of Kalidas, the brother of Pradeep Kumar. ‘Do Dilon Ki Daastaan’ (1966) was the last released film under the banner, Deep and Pradeep Productions.
The story of ‘Ek Sholaa’ (1958) is as under:
Nirmal Kumar (Pradeep Kumar) who is doing his final year of Engineering in a college in Mumbai, stays in a building as a tenant with his maid servant Pedro (Dhumal). In the same building another tenant, Mala (Mala Sinha), a stage actress and dancer, has taken a flat opposite Nirmal Kumar’s flat and stays with her maid servant, Mary (Tuntun). Both of them often meets, mostly under the hostile situations. Apparently, both Pedro and Mary also meets in similar situations.
One night, Mala has a stage dance show in which Nirmal goes to watch it on a complimentary ticket. During the stage show, the fire engulfs the stage in which Mala is caught. While the audience hurriedly leave the show, Nirmal runs through the fire and saves Mala. But he himself gets injured due to artificial pillars of the stage falling on him. He is hospitalised with fractured bones. Mala takes care of him during his hospitalisation. They fall in love with each other and get married in a temple. After the marriage, Nirmal and Mala stay in his house with Pedro and Mary. Mala has some apprehension as to how Nirmal’s parents will react to their sudden marriage. Nirmal assures her that his family members – father, Ishwardas (Nazir Hussain) his mother (Leela Mishra), his younger brother, Anil (Jawahar Kaul) and younger sister, Usha (Baby Naaz) will welcome her with open arms.
In his native place, Nirmal’s father, Ishwardas has fixed his marriage with Shobha (Shubha Khote), the daughter of the wealthy Diwan Chamanlal (Narbada Shankar) and has sent a telegram to him to come home urgently without mentioning about his marriage. Nirmal is happy that he gets an opportunity to take Mala with him and to formally introduce her to his family. Both of them travel to the native place. Contrary to his expectation, Ishwardas is enraged by Nirmal’s marriage with Mala without his approval. He humiliates Mala being a low dancing girl. Nirmal defends her which further infuriates Ishwardas. He orders him to get out of the house forthwith. Nirmal’s mother tries to defend the son and in her attempt to stop him from leaving the house, she falls down and dies. Even during this moment, Ishwardas blames Mala who has brought ill-omen to the family. After some time, Ishwardas gets his younger son, Anil married to Shobha to keep his promise to Diwan Chamanlal albeit partially.
Nirmal and Mala return to Mumbai when they find their respective maid, Pedro and Mary have already got married. After his Engineering graduation, Nirmal gets a job. Mala is blessed with a baby boy. Life goes on smoothly for Mala and Nirmal. But for Ishwardas, life is not the same after the death of his wife. With the arrival of Shobha as his daughter-in-law in his house, the life has become more troublesome. Shobha is a short-tempered woman and is a spendthrift. She is not interested in having children.
Years pass on with no communication between Nirmal and his father Ishwardas. Nirmal has got promotion in his job while his younger brother Anil, becomes jobless when their Mill goes into liquidation. Debtors line up in front of Ishwardas’s residence, while his daughter-in-law, Shobha continues with her reckless spending. Even the house in which they are staying is being auctioned to meet debt obligations. Anil comes to Mumbai with Shobha in search of a job while Ishwardas and his younger daughter, Usha roam on the street. One day, while traveling in the car, Mala notices an old man lying on the road almost unconscious and a small girl is sitting beside him. She takes him to her outhouse to tend him. The old man is Ishwardas, and the girl is Usha. Neither of them has recognised each other as after marriage when Mala had visited, she was in pardah.
Meanwhile, Shobha goes to a jewelry shop and sells her mangalsutra to raise money. In the same shop, Mala meets her who was her classmate in the college. She invites Shobha with her husband for a dinner in her house. Again, both are not able to relate each other as there was a complete disconnect with the family for years and Nirmal was out of Mumbai for office work. Since it was late night, Mala advises Shobha and her husband to stay for the night in her house.
In the night, Shobha steals some jewelries and valuable items from the cupboard. Her husband, Anil sees and pleads her not to do such thing. She ignores him and runs towards the exit when the dog starts barking, Anil snatches the bag with stolen items and runs towards the road when the dog is chasing him. The shouts of thief resound the house. Ishwardas runs from the outhouse and catches Anil. Seeing him, Ishwardas snatches the jewelry bag from Anil’s hand so that Anil is not caught and the blame for theft falls on him. At that moment, Nirmal returns from his tour and gets feedback from Mala about the old man. Nirmal orders Pedro to handover the old man to the police. Shobha, out of guilt, reveals that she had done the theft, and her father-in-law is innocent. At that time, Nirmal recognises his father, Anil and Usha. They unite forgetting what has happened in the past.
The film had eight songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Madan Mohan. Five songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 6th song, ‘jaadoogar tune kaisaa jaadoo ye kiyaa’ rendered by Asha Bhosle for Mala Sinha. The background of the song is that after Pradeep Kumar and Mala Sinha get married in a temple, they walk together and witness another marriage ceremony with pomp and dances. Mala Sinha starts imagining herself in that marriage ceremony mold, dancing with them while Pradeep Kumar plays flute.
