#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

Yesterday 13th May 2025 was the seventy-nineth birthday of Shree Bishwanath Chatterjee compiler of Hindi Film Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980).
This post is delayed on my part as I could not finish it yesterday. Earlier I had planned to visit to Nagpur for this special occasion, but it could not happen. I had spoken to our common friend Mr Avinash Shravane at Nagpur, and we thought that few likeminded friends would also attend this function. But it did not materialize. However, few friends did arrange some program as informed to me by Mr Chatterjee himself, when I called him to wish him on his birthday yesterday. (I am yet to get the updates about the function held yesterday, so that may be covered later 😊).
Those who have the copy of Geet Kosh (Vol-V) would have read about the brief introduction about Mr Chatterjee on the cover page no.2 of this Geet Kosh. He has been a co-compiler with Shree Harmandir jee for HGK Vol-I to Vol-IV etc. and a co-compiler with also for the ‘List of Hindi Films (Talkie) – 1931-1987. He has been a co-author/co-editor with Vishwas Nerurkar for the books on Khayyam Saab, Kishore Kumar, Vasant Desai and Sudhir Phadke.
Here is a brief about Shree Chatterjee as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) by Devi Shankar Kanojiya and other details which Shree Chatterjee shared with me. (Devi Shankar Kanojiya a family friend is younger to Shree Chatterjee by five years and settled at Kanpur now. He was earlier working in Telecom department of Government of India.)
Shree Bishwanath Chatterjee was born on 13th May 1946 at Nagpur. He is born and brought up at Nagpur only. After his studies he joined the Department of Audit & Accounts (Postal). (This department was later bifurcated in two i.e., Accounts and Audit being separate departments.)
His first posting was at Jaipur (for Jaipur circle) where he stayed for one year i.e. 1970-1971. His next posting was at Bhopal where he stayed till 14.05.1980. He was transferred to Nagpur w.e.f.15.05.1980. He retired in May 2006 as Director of Accounts (Postal). He is now settled in Nagpur. He has a daughter who is happily married and stays abroad with her family. She has a son.
It so happened that around 1966 Bishwanath Chatterjee got interested in Hindi Film Music, or rather the HFM attracted him so much that after two years i.e., around 1968 a thought of compiling the details of all songs till date occured to him.
However, in absence of sufficient and required resources he had to keep the idea in abeyance. However the strong urge to create such a compilation has already taken deep roots in his mind. In 1975 he got to know about Harmandir Singh Hamraaz jee through the weekly ‘Screen’ and he came in contact with him. He came to know that Hamraz jee was also working on a similar project and in fact almost 50% work of compiling such information was completed by Hamraz jee till then. So, he decided to support Hamraaz jee whole heartedly. And he has been instrumental in preparing the manuscripts for the first four volumes of ‘Geet Kosh’. Subsequently, he independently compiled the ‘Geet Kosh – Vol-V’. Shree Chatterjee also accompanied Hamraaz jee in making extensive travels to places like Bombay, Poona, Indore, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Calcutta, for gathering information and meeting various film personalities and film connoisseurs to get accurate information as possible.
In between, in the year of 1975 he founded ‘Saurabh Radio Shrota Sangh’ at Nagpur and published ‘Saurabh-1977’ (as a co-editor). Shree Chatterjee has been a ‘passionate’ student of Hindi Film Music and has keen interests in Hindustani Classical Music. He has his own library consisting of lot of books about films and Geet & Ghazals. He is a voracious reader. He is very thorough about details. He remembers his meetings- full with dates, dates of publication of books (of other authors), and other related things with dates >He also remembers ‘mistakes’ and wrong information about films and songs that are in circulation and that have not been corrected so far by the sources (even after pointing them out to the compilers by him). A person of his age still remembering things so well is amazing when I compare that with my memories (despite being twenty years younger to him). 😊
I met him in person for the first time at Nagpur during my stay at Nagpur during 2015-2017, where our regular reader Shri Avinash Shravane was also with us. We met at a film screening program by ‘Cine Montage, Nagpur’. My brief stay at Nagpur ended on 09.03.2017. I moved to Kenya for my job for a Project there and I returned back India in 2019. After leaving Nagpur I had been in touch with Shree Chatterjee on phone and that continues till date. Many times, when I had query or a doubt about some information about a movie/song/movie detail he has always been ready to share with me and clear any doubts as the case may be. Whenever I discuss wany matters with him, I found myself running out of time considering the unending list of topics that I needed to discuss with him.. He is very humble, generous, enthusiastic and extremely sensible person.
Recently I met him on 2nd of March’2025 at his place in Nagpur. It was a more relaxed meeting compared to our first meetting as I had taken his prior appointment for this meeting. This meeting was taking place after a couple of our scheduled meetings had to be cancelled.
When I reached his place, he was listening to Vividh Bharati, where interview of Shaheda Bihar the daughter of lyricist S.H. Bihari was being broadcast. He was very keen to listen to each and every word what Shaheda said in her interview. After this session he received a call from Harmandir jee and they discussed about this radio program. That was a lesson for me to witness the level of sincerity, dedication and thoroughness these people employed in ensuring sharing and passing on authentic and accurate information to the future generations. Nowadays, we find many media people presenting their programmes without bothering to dig deep to ensure the authenticity of information that they present. There is this very recent example in case of actor Manoj Kumar, where people in their articles on online media named him as director for movies like ‘Patthar Ke Sanam’, ‘Neelkamal’ etc. It has become very difficult now to stop the flow of wrong information online. When faced with such fog of incorrect information, people like Shree Chatterjee are sources of correct, authentic and well researched informationrelated to HFM.
In one of my earlier discussions with him, we had discussed about the non-availability of printed books where he was a co-author with Mr Vishwas Nerurkar i.e. books on Khayyam Saab, Kishore Kumar, Vasant Desai, Sudhir Phadke and Madan Mohan, Gulzar. I have the book on Khayyam in my collection. Other books are no longer not available in printed format. I had got the eBook on Pancham. During this discussion on phone Shree Chatterjee was also going through his library and he told me that he has one copy of ‘Qatrah Qatrah’ (Gulzar). Since then, he had preserved this copy for me, and he gifted it to me when I visited to him. (This was almost nine months after we had discussed about this book. He took care to keep it ready with him when I visited him.)
On this occasion, I have selected a Pancham-Gulzar song. I became aware of this song long back during my daily browsing sessions on internet. However, there was no authentic information available about its details viz. lyricist, composer etc. The dettails if mentioned, differed on different links. I listened to this song umpteen times including its Bengali version sung by Asha Bhonsle (i.e. phoolo gondho nei…). Whenever I came across a keen listener of HFM I would discuss this song with him and check with him if he had any additional information about this song. One interesting episode is about one of my colleagues working at Kenya with me. He is from Bengal. He was very sure that this song was from a Rajesh Khanna movie. He told me that he got this information either through discussions among his parents or friend circle. As a Rajesh Khanna fan I also wished that it should be from a Kaka movie. The very first link of the song I came across on internet had the picture of Rajesh Khanna and Zaheera on it. However, this song seems to be from untitled movie, or it could be from the movie ‘Bebus’ too.
In the book ‘Qatrah-Qatrah’ (Collection of Gulzar Pancham Songs) by Gulzar, Researched, Compiled and Edited by Vishwas Nerurkar & Bishwanath Chatterjee this song is mentioned as from an ‘Untitled Movie’. This book was first published on 4th January’2008.
Now we will take a look on the two possible movie-titles that this song might belong to. On this blog there is a song available for the movie ‘Bharosa-1981’ where the star-cast is mentioned as Rajesh Khanna and Zaheera. (and that is the reason we should discuss it here). In the book ‘Pancham – An Anthology of R. D. Burman’s Musical Works’ by Vishwas Nerurkar & Bishwanath Chatterjee (first published in Sepetember’1997) the movie details for this movie are given as below.
“Bharosa” directed by Meraj and produced by S.L. Shivdasani remained a ‘shelved’ movie. The banner of this movie was ‘Chitrashala’. The artistes for this movie were Dharmendra, Rekha, Rati Agnihotri, Zarina Wahab, Asrani and others. The list of songs for this movie includes two songs one titled as ‘Kaise dekhoon meree aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. The title for the second song is not mentioned while it was supposedly sung by Kishore Kumar. Lyricist for the both the songs is Gulzar. The source of this information as per the book Pancham is Gulzar Saab himself.
Now we come to the second movie whose details contained in same book on Pancham are given as below.
“Bebus” is another shelved movie which was produced and directed by Narinder Bedi for ‘Bedi Brothers Combine’. The artistes for this movie included Sanjeev Kumar, Reena Roy, Sulakshana Pandit, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani, Danny, Nadira, Johny Whiskey, Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo and others. Two songs are possibly said to be recorded for this movie which were penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. The singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Danny and Babli. The source of this information is Salim Merchant. One song by Danny, Babli & chorus, and one by Asha & Kishore.
So, there is a possibility that this song might have been recorded for the movie ‘Bebus’ (but different cast), as there is song sung by Asha and Kishore there. The cast of this movie might have been changed or Kaka and Zaheera were taken in place of Sanjeev Kumar and Reena Roy?
Whatever the possibility, this song is too good to miss here on the blog. After all it comes from the pen of Gulzar Saab. The composition by Pancham was used by him for a Bengali song on the occasion of Durga Pooja in the seventies. The lyrics for the Bengali song are by Gouri Prasanna Mazumdar.
On an earlier occasion of birthday of Shree Chatterjee, I had presented a song ‘zindagee phoolon kee naheen…’, today once again we have flowers and this time ‘they are speaking’ 😊
The Bangla version of this song (sung by Asha Bhonsle) is considered a timeless classic song in Bangla. So it comes as a surprise why the Hindi version of such a remarkable song could not get utilised in any Hindi released movie.
Once again, wishing Mr Chatterjee a very happy birthday, and a healthy and peaceful, yet’ full of music’al life ahead.
