#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-12)
—————————–
If one take a look at the films made in the golden era of Hindi films, one notices that many mythological movies were made during those decades. This trend continued to some extent even in the decade of seventies. However, after mid-seventies or by early eighties, mythological movies have become conspicuous by their absence.
Kavi Pradeep was among the prominent lyrics writers who wrote songs for mythological movies. Today’s song is from one such mythological movie i.e. ‘Raam Navami-1956’. This movie was directed by Raman B.Desai for ‘Subhaag Productions, Bombay’. It was passed by Censor Board on 15.06.1956. The producer of this movie was Jasubhai Patel. The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Prem Adib, Ramayan Tiwari, Yashodhara Katju, Rajkumar, Ratnamala, Babu Raje, Shubha Khote, Amrut Rana, Radheshyam, Samson, Jawahar Kaul, Rooplakshami and Shree Bhagwan in it.
“Raam Navami” has eight songs composed by Bulo C. Rani and penned by Kavi Pradeep. Playback singers for this movie were Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, S. Balbir, and Kavi Pradeep. Asha Bhonsle sung five solo and two duets (one each with Rafi and Kavi Pradeep), while one song has three singers i.e. Asha Bhonsle, Rafi and S Balbir. It means that the voice of Asha Bhonsle is present in all the songs of this movie.
So far, three songs from this movie ‘Raam Navami’ have been posted on the blog. Today I am presenting the fourth song from this movie. This song is in the voice of Asha Bhonsle. It is about the meeting of Lord Raam and Shabaree. Shabaree was a ‘bheelni’ and a village woman and a highly devoted person. Impressed by her devotion towards him Lord Raam gives his blessing to Shabaree by visiting her ‘hut’ or ‘jhupdiyaa’. The lyrics of this song are about the request by Shabaree to Lord Raam to eat the ‘bers’ (jujube/Ziziphus fruit) which she had specially plucked and brought for him when he visits her hut in the forest. (in this process I also got to know what ‘ber’ is called in English 🙂 ). This song is as sweet to listen to as the fruits given by Shabaree to Lord Ram must have been. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the film and its songs.
Let us listen to this song now…
