I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Ponga Pandit’. “Ponga Pandit-1975” was directed by Prayag Raaj for ‘Amar Chhaaya, Bombay’. It was produced by Surinder Kapoor. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.07.1975. “Ponga Pandit” was dedicated to the memory of actress Geeta Bali. The titles of this movie mentioned that some of the outdoor locations in this movie are Hardwar, Tehri and Pauri (Garhwal), and Virbhadra where this movie was shot.

‘Ponga Pandit’ had Randhir Kapoor, Neeta Mehta (Debut movie), Danny Denzongpa, Prema Narayan, Nirupa Roy, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Madan Puri, Pinchoo Kapoor, Sulochana Chatterjee, Arpana Chowdhary, Sunder, S.N. Tripathi, and Ranjeet. They were supported by Rajen Kapoor, Hari Kapoor, Moolchand, Shreeram Shastri, Indu Mehta, Sonu Arora, Shaifali, Sabeena, Ranbir Raj, Mansaram, Sunil Dhawan, Rattan Gaurang, Sadiq Irani, Harinder Kapoor, Neema Roy, Shakti Raj, Sameena, Sheikh, Rahul Raaj and Master Salim.

Prayag Raj who directed this movie also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajinder Krishan who was also the lyricist for the songs in this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Kamalakar. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This movie has six songs written by Rajinder Krishan. These songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, and Usha Mangeshkar.

Here is a brief about this movie taken from the internet.(I have added the actors’ names to their respective character name in the movie).

Haridwar-based Neelkanth Pandey (Pinchoo Kapoor) and Shambhu Nath (Madan Puri) get their children, Bhagwati Prasad (Randhir Kapoor as grown up Bhagwati) and Parvati (Neeta Mehta as grown up Parvati) respectively, married. While Shambhu re-locates to live in Bombay, Neelkanth continues to reside in the same residence. Years later, both children have grown up, so Neelkanth invites the Naths to finalize the nuptials. Very soon the Pandeys will face humiliation and ridicule at the hands of Parvati, who now calls herself Pamela, and Shambhu, who wants his daughter to marry someone sophisticated and wealthy, while Parvati is in love with a singer named Rocky(Danny Dengzongpa). Bhagwati is determined to fulfil his parents’ wishes and decides to stay wed to Parvati, re-locates to Bombay, to try and woo her back – with results that will end up changing his life forever.

An interesting review (called as ‘mini-review’ 🙂 of this movie is available on ‘memsaab story’ where in our respected editor and few members of the blog have also commented in the past on this article. Interested readers can read this to get an idea about the plot and presentation of this movie.

One song from ‘Ponga Pandit-1975’ has been posted earlier on this blog. This was the song that was at ‘paaydaan’ number ‘20’ in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of ‘1975’.

The toppers of that year were also the compositions of Laxmikant-Pyarelal i.e. the songs from the movie ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974)’. Out of the thirty-two songs in this annual list nine songs were composed by the music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, five songs were composed by Rajesh Roshan, nine songs were composed by Rahul Dev Burman, two songs by Kalyanji-Anandji and Shankar-Jaikishan each, and one song each composed by Shyamal Mitra, Salil Chaudhary, Aziz Nazan, Bappi Lahiri, and Nitin-Mangesh.

Today I am presenting the second song from ‘Ponga Pandit’ which is a nice hummable & entertaining song sung by Kishore Kumar with his characteristic gusto. Randhir Kapoor lip-syncs the song. Also present in the picturisation of this song are Neeta Mehta, Prema Narayan, Danny Denzongpa and many others. This song was quite frequently heard during its heydays but it has since been forgotten.
(Note – with this song Kishore Kumar’s tally of songs as a playback singer stands at 1400 on the blog).

Let us enjoy this song …

Song-Ganga ghat ka paanee piyaa hai (Pongaa Pandit)(1975) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

mujhko bhalaa samajhte ho kyaa
tumhen haridwaar pahunchaa doongaa aa aa
gangaa ghaat kaa paanee piyaa hai
ab sabko main paanee pilaa doongaa aa

pyaar kee baanee bolnewaalaa
ban jaaye ek tamaashaa
is duniyaa mein to chaltee hai
bas laathhee kee bhaashaa
re ae
pyaar kee baanee bolnewaalaa
ban jaaye ek tamaashaa
is duniyaa mein to chaltee hai
bas laathhee kee bhaashaa
kaun hai tolaa aa
kaun hai maashaa
ye bhed abhee samjhaa doongaa aa aa
gangaa ghaat kaa paanee piyaa hai
ab sabko main paanee pilaa doongaa aa

do shabdon mein keh detaa hoon
is duniyaa kee kahaanee
bholey ko jag moorakh samjhe
aur chatur ko gyaanee
re ae do shabdon mein keh detaa hoon
is duniyaa kee kahaanee
bholey ko jag moorakh samjhe
aur chatur ko gyaanee
bholaa hoon main
nirbal naheen
din ko bhee taare dikhaa doongaa aa
gangaa ghaat kaa paanee piyaa hai
ab sabko main paanee pilaa doongaa aa
haan

tum ko sab kuchh nayaa mubaarak
ham ko wahee puraanaa
dekho goree
umar hai baalee
soch ke paaon badhhaanaa
hey ae tum ko sab kuchh
nayaa mubaarak
ham ko wahee puraanaa
dekho goree
umar hai baalee
soch ke paaon badhhaanaa
ye meet hai
ik raat ke
main to sang sang umar bitaa doongaa aa
gangaa ghaat kaa paanee piyaa hai
ab sabko main paanee pilaa doongaa aa
mujhko bhalaa samajhte ho kyaa
tumhen haridwaar pahunchaa doongaa aa aa
gangaa ghaat kaa paanee piyaa hai
ab sabko main paanee pilaa doongaa

After commencing as assistants during the sixties Laxmikant Pyarelal became the top composers and ruled the bollywood industry for around two decades. They also had the record of maximum films during the seventies at a time and managed. However, with the demise of Lakshmi Kant ( as in the case of Kalyanji of KA duo at the same period) things changed and newcomers took over. Anyway they entertained during their stay at the top just like RD, KA and SJ.

What a coincidence! I was thinking of this song only last week, when I was traveling along the plains of Ganga (Gangaji as the North Indians address it).

Infact, I was planning to write a post for it but didn’t have my laptop with me during the travel

Though this song was in my wish list since long, I was not supposed to send it for KK’s 1400th song. However I wish to contribute a post for Laxmikant’s remembrance day so shared this song. Sorry, if i spoiled your post. I hope you will find another song, as there are still many about Ganga jee, and share your post please.

Regards,

Avinash
