(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 2)
—————————————

Today we are celebrating the 86th Birth Anniversary of musical genius Rahul Dev Burman, fondly known as Pancham. Music lovers are aware that Pancham started his music career with the 1961 movie ‘Chhote Nawaab’. The song that he recorded first was in the voice of none other than Lata Mangeshkar.

The story behind this first song has been discussed by our editor Shree Atul jee, while discussing this song ‘ghar aajaa ghir aaye badraa’ from the movie ‘Chhote Nawaab’ on the blog. I am reproducing the text from his post, about this story, below.

R D Burman was an assistant to his father S D Burman for several years before he caught the eye of Mahmood who decided to give him his first break as an independent music director.

As can be expected, Pancham (as R D Burman was known) was very enthusiastic about this opportunity. He wanted to have his first song recorded by Lata. But S D Burman had a strained relationship with Lata, and he was not using her voice (like O P Nayyar) for his movies for several years.

In order that he may be able to use Lata’s voice for his debut song, Pancham brokered a peace deal between Lata and S D Burman. After that S D Burman began to use Lata’s voice in his music again.
And just what was the song for which all this peace process was initiated? This song was “ghar aajaa ghir aaye badraa” which marked R D Burman’s arrival as a music director. The lyricist for this movie was Shailendra.

This song is a quiz master’s delight. For instance, what is the raag this song is based on? For most songs, reply like Malkauns, Darbari, Bhairavi etc would do the trick. But not this song. It is not one of the usual raags that most Bollywood songs are based on. This song is based on a lesser-known Raag called Raag Maalgunji.

This song ‘ghar aajaa ghir aaye badraa’ was liked by many and it ruled hearts then and even now music lovers like this song very much. But, from the mass popularity point of view and from the ‘Binaca Geetmala’ point of view this song did not do well in the annual list of songs of 1961. It was another song from this movie ‘Chhote Nawaab’ that stood at number five in the list. This song was ‘matwaalee aankhon waale’ a duet sung by Mohd Rafi & Lata Mangeshkar.

The association of Rahul Dev Burman and Lata Mangeshkar went on to create some of the timeless classics and gems for Hindi movies.

Today we have a lesser-known song from this collaboration from the movie ‘Raja Rani-1973”.

This movie was directed by Sachin Bhowmick. He was also the writer of this movie. The producer of ‘Raaja Rani’ was Jagdish Kumar, and it was presented by J. Omprakash. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 15.01.1973. The cast of this movie had Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Raj Mehra, Iftekhar, David, Suresh, Brahm Bharadwaj, Asit Sen, Altaaf, Naaz, Dulari, Praveen Pal, Ravikant, Madhup Sharma, Kanu Rai, Uma Dutt, Ratna, Ashok Saxena, Master Manoj, Master Chiku, Baby Subiya, Surender Shore, Indrani Mukherjee, V.K. Sharma (new discovery) and many others. Dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant. Editing of this movie was done by Pratap Dave.

This movie had seven songs, all written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. Out of the seven songs in this movie the voice of Lata Mangeshkar appears in six songs, including four solo songs. I have presented two Lata solos from this movie in the past on this blog. Today I present the third Lata solo from this movie. It is a nice ‘mujraa’ song. Though is a lesser heard song it is a nice song to listen to for music lovers.

Let us listen to this song now …
