‘Khilaadi’ (1992) was produced by Girish Jain of Venus Records and Tapes and was directed by Abbas-Mastan. The cast included Akshay Kumar, Ayesha Julka, Deepak Tijori, Sabeeha, Prem Chopra, Shakti Kapoor, Beena, Tinu Anand, Sharat Saxena, Anant Mahadevan, Johny Lever, Amrit Patel, Guddi Maruti, Dinyar Contractor, Kunika etc. This was Girish Jain’s first Hindi film as a producer and the second Hindi film for director, Abbas -Mastan. The film’s story has been inspired from ‘Khel Khel Mein’ (1975) which itself was inspired from a French novel, ‘Good Children Don’t Kill’ written by Louis Thomas and translated in English by Graham Snell.

The stories in both the films as well as the French novel referred to above start with the pranks played by youngsters in their high-school/college days for fun. However, when a prank goes wrong to such an extent that it results in a death, the life becomes horrible for the pranksters who have indulged in it purely for fun. I have watched both the films years back and found them to be ‘pass-time’ films sans boredom. Both the films have become a successful formula for a box office hit film by combining masala elements, comedy, musical romance and finally a thrilling suspense.

The story of ‘Khilaadi’ (1992) in detail is as under:

Four students – Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar), Boney (Deepak Tijori), Neelam Choudhary (Ayesha Jhulka) and Sheetal (Sabeeha) in a college in Mumbai play pranksters. Raj and Boney play betting between them and it is Boney who is always a loser. Raj and Neelam are romantically linked so also Boney and Sheetal. Raj’s elder brother, Inspector Suresh Malhotra (Shakti Kapoor) have been warning him of his habit of betting and pranks and once he has put both Raj and Boney behind bars in his police station for these habits, It was only through the intervention of his wife (Beena) they have been released with a warning.

Neelam is a rich heiress who has no relatives except her uncle (Anant Mahadevan) who looks after her estate in Pune. Sheetal is the daughter of Kailash Nath (Prem Chopra) who is a politician and is standing for re-election. This time, he is trying the create a sympathy wave to win when in the last election, his money power could not make him a winner.

The college has selected some girls for a trip to Nashik for Basketball tournament in which Neelam and Sheetal are included. The girls are going to stay in a girls’ hostel. Raj and Boney decide to follow them to Nashik disguising themselves as girls by taking a lift in the bus in which girls are travelling along with their sport teacher, More (Tinu Anand). They fool More to stay in the Girls’ Hostel only to be caught red-handed. Raj and Boney are put in lock-up. Neelam’s uncle helps them to get release from the police lock-up.

As a part of his prankster habit, one day Raj Malhotra boasts of extorting money from Sheetal’s father, Kailash Nath for which he bets with Boney who accepts his challenge. The plan is to inform Kailash Nath that his daughter, Sheetal is kidnapped and she will be released only after a ransom of Rs,5 lakhs is delivered to a pre-determined address. On the day of the execution of this prank, Neelam and Sheetal are on the visit to meet Raj and Bonney when an unidentified speeding car is about to hit them. Luckily, the girls are timely saved by Boney and he notes that the speeding car is driven by a lady.

Coming back to the prank on Kailash Nath, Raj has already hired a cottage from Anna Pilla (Johny Lever) for them in the outskirt of Mumbai to stay during the so called ‘kidnapping’ of Sheetal. Raj telephones to Kailash Nath as per their plans and asks him to come at the given address with ransom money. Kailash Nath decides not to inform the police as he fears that Sheetal’s life will be in danger once the kidnapper comes to know about it. However, his servant informs the police and Inspector Suresh Malhotra taps Kailash Nath’s phone to get the location of the kidnapper when the kidnapper telephones.

Unmindful of the police action, Kailash Nath delivers the money. Later, Raj and Boney return to the hired cottage where Neelam is waiting for them outside the cottage. Raj shows the money bag and tells Bonney that he has won the bet. However, inside the cottage, they find Sheetal has been stabbed to death. A prank has now turned into a horrible incident. Kailash Nath is distraught but his party workers say that there is a strong sympathy wave for him after the death of his daughter. But he has some other problems (the audience come to know later) which, if exposed, can affect his winning prospects in the election.

In the cottage, Raj, Neelam and Boney are in deep shock they would become the prime suspects due to an unexpected murder of Sheetal. They devise a plan to bury Sheetal’s dead body in a forest by carrying in a hired car. But police van intercepts their car for the wrong back light which Raj gets reprieve when he gives the reference of Inspector Suresh Malhotra as his elder brother. The police van escorts them to Inspector Suresh’s house where they park the car with the dead body along with the brief case containing ransom amount in the garage. Next day, they take out the car and transfer the dead body in an open dicky of a car in the parking lot of a cinema theatre. Police gets the dead body which is handed over to Kailash Nath for cremation. Inspector Suresh is searching for clues which can lead him to identify the kidnapper.

After reading about Sheetal’s death in the newspaper, Anna Pillai meets Inspector Suresh who reveals him that there were two boys and two girls who had come to stay in his cottage. But they left the cottage without informing him. Inspector Suresh visits Anna’s cottage and finds a book that Neelam had borrowed from the college library. Inspector Suresh tells this to Raj and Boney by way of the progress of the case the finding of the book which will lead him to the kidnapper. Both Raj and Boney steal the relevant page from the library book issue register in the same night.

In the meanwhile, a dancer Julie (Kunika) demands a high amount of money from Kailash Nath to keep her mouth shut about their illicit relations, She gives him an ultimatum to bring the cheque to give her when he attends her dance show. Raj and Boney participate in the dance show as dancers while Neelam and her uncle attend the dance show in the audience. While dancing, Boney recognises Julie as the same lady who was driving the car to crush Neelam and Sheetal. He decides to question her after the dance show in the back room. Outside the room, he hears arguments inside the room. He peeps through a keyhole and finds Julie and an unidentified man are having arguments. Julie is telling the man that at his insistence, she has tried to crush Neelam and Sheetal by way of a car accident. She is blackmailing him for more money to keep her mouth shut. The man kills her and comes out of the room when he sees Boney who runs away. That man sends his goons to kill Boney.

After the dance show, Raj and Suresh are waiting for Boney. Not finding him, they go in the police jeep to search him. The goons have nearly killed Boney when Raj and Suresh reach on time and rescue him with serious injuries. Before he is admitted to a hospital, Boney reveals that an unidentified man wants to kill Neelam who is in her college hostel. At this point, Raj tells Inspector Suresh the truth about the kidnapping prank and pleads that none of them has anything to do with the killing of Sheetal.

Without wasting much time on this issue, Inspector Suresh with Raj proceed towards the college hostel. But before them, the unidentified man has already entered the girls hostel after killing the security man. He has already entered Neelam’s room. However, before the man rushes towards her to kill her, Neelam slides a sofa chair towards him which makes him off-balance and he falls on the roof. By that time, Raj and Inspector Suresh reach the hostel and arrest that man who turns out to be Neelam’s Uncle.

In the police lock up, Neelam’s uncle makes a confessional statement. He reveals that he was not her uncle but the manager of her estate in Pune whose father had asked him to look after her while dying as Neelam had no other relatives. When the father’s will revealed that when Neelam turns 18, the manager will hand over all the estate to her. If she died before turning 18, he would inherit the estate. The will was a great disappointment for the manager as he felt that as a caretaker he should have got at least some share of Neelam’s estate. So, the manager thought of killing Neelam before she turns 18. As per manager’s plan, he sent Neelam to Mumbai for college and hired Julie to kill Neelam and her friends by crushing under the car to look like an accidental death. But Julie failed in her execution of the plan. So, he decided to kill Neelam himself when he came to know that Neelam and her friends had hired a cottage. He went to the cottage and mistakenly killed Sheetal.

After manager’s confession, Raj, Neelam and Boney are absolved of killing of Sheetal. Raj gives back the ransom money to Kailash who advises him not to play pranks with anyone in the future.

The film had nine songs including two multiple version song which were written by Mahendra Dehlvi (4), Anwar Sagar (2), Dev Kohli (2) and Shyam Raj (1). All the songs were set to music by Jatin-Lalit. I present the first song, ‘waadaa raha sanam honge judaa naa ham’ to appear on the Blog from the film. The song has two versions – the duet version rendered by Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet Bhattacharya and the solo version rendered by Abhijeet Bhattacharya which has different antaras. However, the solo version was not included in the film though it was included in the film’s audio albums. There is a change in the sequential order of antaras in the audio clip of duet version.

There is an interesting trivia about this song as revealed by Abhijeet Bhattacharya during one of the episodes of ‘Indian Idol Season 14’ (October 2023 to March 2024). Originally, this song was intended for S P Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar. However, due to Lata Mangeshkar’s date problems, she was replaced with Alka Yagnik. The song was recorded in the voice of Abhijeet Bhattacharya as a dubbing singer (probably for shooting) along with Alka Yagnik. Later on, however, the recorded song was retained in the film’s soundtrack.

The song was shot at outdoor locations in Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar hill stations. The mukhda part of the song has been picturised in Panchgani Tabletop after which the song shifts to Mahabaleshwar including inside 16th century Mahabaleshwar temple complex. The last stanza of the song has been picturised with the background of Krishna River Valley seen from Mahabaleshwar and with close up of Krishna River in the later part of the last antara of the song.

The context of the song is that after getting caught in the mess created by the fake kidnapping of Sheetal (Sabeeha) in which she gets killed, Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) is in a sombre mood. He feels extremely worried that he can be arrested for Sheetal’s murder. He seeks Neelam’s (Ayesha Jhulka) assurance that whatever be the outcome, she would always be with him. She gives her hand of assurance in his hand and then the song follows as a dream sequence in the film.

Nice post Sadanandji.

This is a movie on my “seen umpteen times & will not tire list”

Infact, the songs of this film always made me feel like RD Burman had a hand in their making.

Peevesie’s Mom,

The feel of R D Burman music in this film may be due to the fact that for this film, Bablu Chakravarty, the music assistant to R D Burman for a long time was one of the Assitant Music Directors for Jatin-Lalit. It is quite likely that he may have used some muscians from R D Burman team.
