In my last article, I had made a passing reference to the film, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) in the context of the prelude music of one of the songs of the film which is the inspiration for the prelude music of the song that was discussed in the aforesaid article. This film suddenly reminded me of its director, Mansoor Khan who had successfully directed ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988) and some more. From his filmography, he directed his last film, ‘Josh’ (2000) and was the co-producer of ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ (2008). It is a rare instance for a film director who has successfully directed four films in a row and vanished from the film industry. It was an interesting quest for me to know as to why he shunned the film industry.

It was Mansoor Khan’s interview which appeared on Society Achievers, after the release his second book, ‘One – The Story Of The Ultimate Myth’ (2023) which gave me some indication as to his present status. During the interview, he revealed that he has been living with his family in Coonoor, a hill station about 20 kms from Ooty in Tamil Nadu since 2004. He owns a 22-Acre organic farm, growing vegetables, dairy farming, running a cheese making unit and a homestay called ‘Acres Wild’. I have read the abstract from the book which has surprised me because he has discussed ‘out of the box’ subject. He is of the view that it is the biggest lie that humans are causing the collapse of living planet. It is only one culture of humans, that is civilisation, which is causing the collapse of the living planet. And the main culprit is the cities. In his first book ‘Third Curve: The End of Growth As We Know It’ (2013) he has questioned the civilisation’s economic laws that it is possible to grow infinitely on a planet with finite resources which are in a shape of a bell-curve. So, after shifting to Coonoor, Mansoor Khan has authored two books in the form of novels which have nothing to do with films.

Mansoor Khan (Born:30/05/1958) is the son of Nasir Hussain, an eminent writer, producer and director of the successful films from 1950s through 1980s and the first cousin of Amir Khan. Actor, Imran Khan is his nephew (his sister’s son). Surprisingly, Mansoor Khan did not have much interest in Hindi films. The only time he watched the Hindi films was when his father would arrange for the extended family members, the screening of his latest released films. He enjoyed the post-screening discussion on films during which he, his sister and Amir Khan would find holes in his ‘lost and found’ formula. At the end of the film show, Nasir Hussain will ask them whether they enjoyed the film. All would say ‘yes’ in chorus to his question. That was what mattered to Nasir Hussain.

From his younger days, Mansoor Khan felt that he was not born for city life and he preferred secluded place in the midst of nature. He was brilliant in his studies. He got admission in IIT, Mumbai for engineering degree in computer science. However, he was disillusioned with the education system which he felt did not fit well for a broader and enlightened views. He discontinued his studies in IIT within a couple of years and took admission in Cornwell University and then in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA to pursue different subjects. He was interested in astronomy, anthropology and sailing. However, here also, he was disillusioned with education system. The technical stuff in the studies did not go well with his liking for the intuitive side of things. He left his studies half-way and returned to Mumbai sometime towards the end of 1970s.

For nearly 5 years, he did nothing except some experimenting with Video as a platform and electronic gadgets. He was still undecided as to what will be his preferred vocation other than film making. However, he felt bad about letting down his father who spent on him a lot of money for his education. He started helping his father by becoming his assistant for the film ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhaana Hai’ (1981) though his mind was not fully in the work. But for this film, he contributed his experience in electronic gadgets by creating a lighting pattern that was synchronised with R.D. Burman’s voice and music for the song, ‘dil lena khel hai dildaar kaa’ with a lit dance floor that flashed in rhythm beats.

It was a short video film, ‘Umberto’(1986) directed by Mansoor Khan which was based on a story of a man who does not want to do anything in his life that Nasir Hussain felt that his son can now direct a full-length feature film. By that time, Nasir Hussain was not keeping good health and he has almost withdrawn from directing films after his three films flopped in a row. So, he gave the responsibility of directing the film, ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988) to his son. Although, he was not ready to plunge into film direction, he had to agree because of his father’s health issue and also as a token of gratitude for spending a lot of money on his education. It was Mansoor Khan’s idea to make the film with a sad ending. But elders in the family were not in favour. With Amir Khan’s support, the sad ending was retained. The film became a big hit.

After his return from USA, Mansoor Khan had developed interest for writing. So, he had started writing a story which seems to basically on his own life as a ‘spoilt brat’ during his early younger days who turns responsible man later. Since he has written the story in English, he gave the title ‘Winners Take All’. It was Nasir Hussain who gave a new title in Hindi. ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ when it was decided to make a film on it. It was the film which Mansoor Khan worked hard on his own initiative. This film also became a super hit. This was followed by ‘Akele Ham Akele Tum’ (1995) and ‘Josh’ (2002) which also became successful on the box office front.

While, Mansoor Khan has created a successful space in the film industry, he was very clear that this was not be the career he wished to pursue. It was during the making of the film ‘Josh’ (2002) that he decided to shift out of Mumbai to a secluded place amidst the nature and become a farmer. Soon after the release of the film ‘Josh’ (2002), he shifted to Coonoor in 2003 on his 22-acre plot to develop into a farmland. His wife and two children followed him after a year. After that, he remained cut-off from the Bombay film industry except that he became a co-producer for ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ (2008) with Amir Khan when the original film producer, Jhamu Sugandh backed out after facing financial crunch. So far, Mansoor Khan has been successful in warding off the temptation of the film industry. [Note: Some information about Mansoor Khan is based on the article ‘The New Guard’ by Gautam Chintamani which appeared on ‘Swarajya’ magazine on December 2, 2016.]

Coming back to Mansoor Khan’s second film ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992), it was produced by Nasir Hussain who also wrote the dialogues. The main cast consisted of Amir Khan, Aayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mamik Singh, Kiran Jhaveri, Ahmed Khan, Deb Mukherjee, Ajit Vachani, Anjan Shrivastav, Asrani etc. This is a sport-based film with romantic drama.

The gist of the story of the film is as under:

The story revolves around two brothers – Sanjay (Amir Khan) and Ratan (Mamik Singh). Sanjay has a carefree attitude while his elder brother, Ratan excels in studies and in his bicycle racing. Their father, Ramlal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) runs a small café who is also a coach in Model College. He wants Ratan to win the cycle race in the ensuing inter-college annual sports competition. The current cycle race champion, Shekhar (Deepak Tijori) and his friends from a high-hand Rajput College make fun of Ratan for dreaming to become the cycle race champion. However, due to his gearless cycle, Ratan is eliminated from the cycle race and Shekhar wins the race.

Sanjay has a close friend, Anjali (Aayesha Julka) from a girl’s Junior College who is secretly in love with Sanjay. Her father always tells her to keep distance from Sanjay and his rogue friends. Sanjay is in love with Devika (Pooja Bedi) who has recently joined the college. This creates jealousy in the mind of Anjali and starts friendship with Shekhar who has already having affairs with many girls.

Ramlal decides to purchase a new imported cycle with gears for Ratan for the next year’s annual cycle race. While practicing, Ratan and Shekhar get into a brawl. In the ensuing fights, Ratan accidentally falls into valley with serious injuries. He is hospitalised and is in coma. With this situation in the family, Sanjay shades his ‘happy go lucky’ attitudes and becomes a responsible son to his father who helps him in Café running. Ratan recovers from the injuries, but he is not fit to participate in the cycle race. Sanjay decides to participate in college’s cycle racing to fulfil his father’s wish to win the race. Anjali helps Sanjay in cycle race practice. It is at this time Sanjay realises that he is in love with Anjali.

The annual cycle racing competition starts, and Sanjay wins the race dethroning Shekhar thus fulfilling his father’s dream.

‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) had 7 songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and set to music by Jatin-Lalit. Two songs from the film have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song from the film, an evergreen song, ‘pehlaa nashaa pehlaa khumaar’ which is rendered by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. This is a song of the first romance, joie de vivre song, picturised on Amir Khan and Aayesha Julka. Mamik Singh, Pooja Bedi, Kiran Jhaveri and Deven Bhojani are also seen in the picturisation.

I liked everything about the song – lyrics, melody, orchestration, picturisation in slow motions, choreography, and the excellent outdoor location (Ooty).

‘Haasil’ (2003) was produced under the banner of Karma Networks Productions and was directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues. The cast included Jimmy Shergill, Hrishita Bhatt in the lead roles supported by Irfaan Khan, Ashutosh Rana, Rajpal Yadav. Varun Bundela, Sharat Saxena, Sudhir Pandey, Raj Zutshi, Tinu Anand, Brijendra Kala, Navani Parihar, Atmaram Bhende etc. The film is a political thriller which starts with students’ politics with a link to the national politics.

This was Tigmanshu Dhulia’s first film as a director and his first collaboration with Irfaan Khan in a film after which they worked together in some more films such as, ‘Charas’ (2004), ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ (2012), ‘Sahab Biwi Aur Gangster’ (2011), ‘Sahab Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’ (2013). On the basis of some of the films I have watched, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s treatment of the story in terms of presentation is quite different from the mainstream Bollywood films. At the same time, his films cannot be called the ‘middle of the road’ or ‘parallel’ cinemas. Most of his films are action/crime thrillers.

Prayagraj born Tigmanshu Dhulia’s family belong to Pauri in Uttarakhand and have no connection with films except that his father, K C Dhulia who was a judge in Allahabad High Court was fond of watching both Hindi and English films. Sometimes, the young Tigmanshu would accompany his father in film theatres who would explains to him the nuances of the films’ stories. His mother was a Professor of Sanskrit in Allahabad University. His schooling was done in Prayagraj and later in Dehradun.

Tigmanshu Dhulia is the youngest among three brothers. His eldest brother, Sudhanshu Dhulia is currently a judge in the Supreme Court while the elder brother, Himanshu Dhulia was a Captain in Indian Navy.

During his college years, Tigmanshu Dhulia started participating in the college dramas as an actor. He was also a member of the college’s music band in which he used to play guitar. After completing his B.A. in English and Economics from Allahabad University in 1986, he took admission for post-graduation in National School of Drama, New Delhi. During his last year in NSD, Delhi, Tigmanshu’s childhood girlfriend, Tulika ran away from her home to get married to him when her parents were arranging marriage with someone else. They got married in 1989 at an Arya Samaj temple followed by a court marriage. Tulika Dhulia now works as Costume designer mostly for her husband’s films.

After completion of his post-graduation from NSD, Tigmanshu Dhulia shifted to Mumbai with his wife sometime in 1990 and stayed with his elder brother, Himanshu Dhulia who was that time attached to INS Hamla. So, his basic requirements of food and shelter were taken care of. But he was still unemployed.

In those days, BI was starting a new private TV channel for broadcasting TV programmes through cables. So, Tigmanshu Dhulia got an offer to produce and direct a TV serial for it. ‘Hum Bambai Nahi Jaayenge’ (1993) was his first TV serial for BI TV, directed by him. However, the series could not be telecast as BI TV had some problems with the cable operators. So, the series remained unreleased. However, his work as a writer-director was appreciated which got him the work as a casting director for ‘Bandit Queen’ (1994). He had also done a few cameo roles in some films. Thereafter, he started assisting director, Pradip Krishen in ‘Electric Moon’ (1992) and Ketan Mehta in ‘Sardar’ (1993). For the next 10 years or so, he directed many TV serials which included ‘Naya Daur’ (1995),’Rajdhani’ (1999) and ‘Best Sellers’ (1999) under which six short stories were presented. During this period, he also wrote dialogues for ‘Dil Se’ (1998).

By the turn of the century, Tigmanshu Dhulia had already written a script for ‘Haasil’ (2003) but he was not getting a producer/financier. The climax in the film was planned with the crowd of Kumbh Mela in Allahabad (Prayagraj). When only 4 days were left to the close of the Kumbh Mela, one of his friends hurriedly arranged some money to enable him to shoot the climax scenes in the midst of Kumbh Mela. After watching the rushes of the climax scenes, a producer agreed to finance the film. The film was critically acclaimed. He started getting a number of films to direct. However, most of the films he signed did not materialised. So, what he got was only the signing amount. With this experience, Tigmanshu Dhulia decided to direct the films at his initiative with the willing producers/financiers.

‘Charas’ (2004) was Tigmanshu’s next released film which, despite critically acclaimed, failed at the box office. Probably, he took a sabbatical from film making and concentrated of a couple of TV serials. He returned to directing ‘Shaagird’ (2011) which was again critically acclaimed but failed at the box office. With ‘Sahab Biwi Aur Gangster’ (2011) and ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ (2012), Tigmanshu Dhulia turned the tide with box office success. The latter film won him the National Film Awards for the Best Feature Film. Tigmanshu Dhulia has so far directed 14 films and a few Web Series. [Note: The early life of Tigmanshu Dhulia is mainly based on his TV interview with Neelesh Misra under his TV Series, ‘The Slow Interview’].

The story of ‘Haasil’ (2003) is as under:

The opening scene of the film sets the tone to the power of the students’ leader when he enters the hall with his cronies to take his seat in the midst of the Vice Chancellor’s speech. He has to abruptly stop his speech for some time when the students are hailing their leader. Of the many factions of the students’ politics, there are two main factions – one led by Daya Shankar Pandey (Ashutosh Rana) and the second by Ranvijay Singh (Irfaan Khan). There are violent clashes that take place between the rival gangs just before the election of the President of the Students Union.

There is another track running parallel to the students’ politics in the film – Annirudh Sharma (Jimmy Shergill) and Niharika Singh (Hrishita Bhatt). Both are college students from descent families, away from the college politics and are also theatre artists. They are in love with each other.

One day, Annirudh saves Ranvijay Singh from the goons of the rival gang and becomes friendly with him. He slowly drifts towards students’ politics under Ranvijay Singh. His family members and Niharika advise Annirudh to keep away from Ranvijay Singh. But he is swayed by the power of Ranvijay Singh without realising that he is getting into a trap set by Ranvijay Singh who secretly loves Niharika. He helps Ranvijay Singh to get votes from students to become the President of Students’ Union by eliminating his main rivals.

One day, Annirudh commits a crime on the instigation by Ranvijay Singh. To save Annirudh from the police, Ranvijay arranges his escape to Mumbai where he has to look after himself. In the meanwhile, Niharika’s father arranges her marriage with someone else. Annirudh returns to Allahabad, and he is shocked to learn that it is Ranvijay Singh who is Niharika’s prospective groom. He feels a great betrayal by Ranvijay Singh whom he has considered as his elder brother. Now, Ranvijay’s marriage with Niharika is fixed in a matter of days. Annirudh and Niharika escape to a unknown place in the city.

Ranvijay Singh comes to know that Annirudh and Niharika have been kept in a safe house by Chief Minister (CM), Kabanlal Tiwari (Sudhir Pandey) to prevent Niharika’s marriage with Ranvijay Singh. He blackmails CM with a tape recording of his conversations which can result in the fall of his government and the end of his political career if the tape is released to public. CM succumbs to blackmail and instructs his staff to release Annirudh and Niharika the next day in the Kumbh Mela with a revolver to Annirudh for his safety.

Ranvijay comes at the Kumbh Mela with his gang with the intention of kidnapping Niharika. Annirudh confronts him and in a fit of rage, he kills Ranvijay Singh with his revolver. At that very moment, some plainclothes policemen come and showers bullets on Ranvijay Singh who is already dead. They remove from his pocket, the recorded tape and take Annirudh and Niharika to the CM who is waiting in his official car. He tells Annirudh that there is no need for him to surrender to the police as in the official record, Ranvijay Singh has been killed in encounter with police. The film ends with Annirudh and Niharika walking away from the Kumbh Mela.

The film is fast-faced, and the action shots look realistic without much of extravagances. Dialogues are crisps and well delivered by the concerned actors. All the main actors have performed their bests. After watching Irfaan Khan’s performance in the film, I think, this film was a turning point in his acting career worthy of a National Film Award for the best actor. Unfortunately, the producer did not submit the film to the panel for the consideration of the National Film Awards. Despite critical acclaims, the film was a ‘disaster’ at the box office front as per Box Office India report.

The film had 7 songs written by Israr Ansari (3), Kausar Pandey (2), Devmani Pandey (1) and Satyaprakash (1) which were set to music by Jatin-Lalit. One song has been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 2nd song, ‘aankhen bhi hoti hai dil ki zubaan’ from the film which is rendered by Abhijeet on the words of Israr Ansari. This is the first song in the film in the background of the budding love affairs of Annirudh (Jimmy Shergill) with Niharika (Hrishita Bhatt). It is a background song in which Annirudh recalls his various meetings with Niharika.

The song starts with the prelude of a short piano recital which reminds me of the piano prelude of the song, ‘pehla nasha pehla khumaar’ from ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992). In the second and the last interludes, saxophone and guitar, respectively are mainly used.

Hullo Atuldom

In the (almost) 14 years of its existence, there have been many changes in the lives of those associated with atulsongaday.me.

Our Atulji has shifted base a few times in these years. If I am not wrong his daughter has qualified to be a doctor as also Nahmji’s son and Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s (Guruji) grandson/s have also become doctors. Peevesie who entered the world of ASAD and was called the youngest follower turning to contributor and mouthpiece (for the blog) among her friends and family has since become a working adult and even has a life-partner as also Nahmji’s daughter. Avinashji has also shifted base a few times and also had an overseas stint in the years in between. Maheshji (Mukesh Fan is his second name) has returned to Motherland and is no longer an NRA (non-resident atulite). I know that similar changes, in life & on the work front, have happened in the lives of other Atulites too. I have myself graduated from being a full-time mother to a leisurely-paced mother.

There is a lesser-known Atulite who has contributed only one post as a guest-poster (she took over the mantle of youngest contributor). Her forte’ is that she is musically inclined as her father (a hyper-active atulite). I know that she also pens verses which are very meaningful. She had given her father this post on his birthday six years back. She was welcomed wholeheartedly by atulites who wanted more from her but her preoccupation with education and other activities may not have given her time to contribute more to the blog. But the song with that post was so meaningful, it would have been appropriate for today. She has grownup into a young adult and is stepping into a new phase of her life. Here is wishing her all the best for the future.

There is a happy event happening in the life of our Guruji too in the next few days. Wishing him lots of joy and all the best to his grandson.

“Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai” is a title that was first used in Hindi films in 1961 which was written and directed by Nasir Husain and had his time-tested formula of hero impersonating, heroine falling in love with the impersonator, misunderstandings creeping in due to the villain and heroine’s father, and finally the hero and heroine getting married with the blessings of all elders. The movie was littered with great songs.

The title was repeated again in 1998. This time the director was Deepak Sareen who had started his career as assistant to Yash Chopra in ‘Deewar’. He had been assistant in ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Doosra Aadmi’, ‘Silsila’, ‘Mashaal’ and ‘Faasle’ before independently directing ‘Ranbhoomi’, ‘Aaina’, ‘Gaddar’, ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’, and ‘Albela’. This romantic film had a skirt-chaser for a hero who is disliked by the girl initially. He woos her by promising to give up his errant ways, convinces both families that they are ready to marry. But the twist in the tale comes in the form of the hero’s son from a previous girlfriend who insists that he will tell-all to the fiancee if the hero doesn’t tell himself. The story comes to a happy ending with the girl and the child forgiving the hero and ‘THE END’

“Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1998) starred Twinkle Khanna, Farida Jalal, Himani Shivpuri, Namrata Shirodkar (guest appearance), Salman Khan, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Saeed Jaffery, and Master Aditya Narayan. The movie had songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Jatin-Lalit. Today we are having the movie debuting with a song sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. It has the whole cast except Aditya Narayan enjoying the engagement of Salman and Twinkle.

Hullo Atuldom

The screen turns to a dark, cloudy sky. There is thunder and lightning. A shimmering disk appears against this backdrop, accompanied by music that has certain magical quality about it. As the background score gently works its way to a crescendo, finishing with a flourish of cymbals, a Greek column-like pedestal, bearing the ‘NH Films’ insignia appears against a smoke-filled screen. Almost instantly a booming voice recites a couplet, with a soft but distinct drum roll accompanying the oration. The couplet goes:

Kya ishq ne samjha hai, kya husn ne jaana hai
Hum khaaq-nasheenon ki thokar mein zamaana hai

The voiceover ends with an emphatic drumbeat. The credits follow led by the opening credit, NASIR HUSAIN FILMS Presents…..

This is from the introductory page of the book “Music Masti Modernity- The cinema of NASIR HUSAIN” by Akshay Manwani – a gift that my daughter gave me last year for Mother’s Day. From the book I learnt that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was Nasir Husain’s mother’s maternal uncle. He (Nasir Husain) was the fourth of five children with Tahir Husain being his younger brother. Actors Tariq (of kya hua tera waada) and Aamir Khan are his nephews where Tariq is his older brother – Anees’s son and Aamir is Tahir Husain’s son. His grandson Imran Khan (daughter Nuzhat’s son) is an actor. A very interesting trivia that I learnt from the book is that Nasir Sa’ab’s wife – Ayesha Khan- was born Margaret Francina Lewis, and she was an assistant choreographer in films.Subodh Mukherjee used his assistant Nasir and the choreographer’s assistant whenever he setup shots and almost played cupid in their life.

We (the regular followers of this blog) know that Nasir Husain began his life in the film industry as a writer at Filmistan when the screenwriter Aghajani Kashmeri fell ill and Nasir Sa’ab was asked to complete the unfinished dialogues for “Chandni Raat” (1949); the book says he was not credited for this. We also know that he went on to produce and direct films and gave audiences breezy musical romantic entertainers right till the 1980s when he directed “Zabardast” (1985) which was produced by Mushir-Riaz which had Rati Agnihotri- Jaya Prada- Tanuja- Geeta Kak- Sunny Deol- Rajiv kapoor- Sanjeev Kumar- Amrish Puri and others in the cast.

1988 saw Nasir Sa’ab’s son Mansoor Khan turn director with “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” which was produced by Nasir Husain Films, and the story-screenplay and dialogues were by Nasir Husain. The next two films directed by Mansoor Khan- “Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar” {JJWS (1992)} and “Akele Hum Akele Tum” (1995) also had dialogues by Nasir Husain. That means career began and ended Nasir Sa’ab with being a writer. I think he hung up his boots post this.

“Yaadon Ki Baraat” (1973) made by Nasir Husain Films had a long song which changes beat/ tempo etc. with ‘Dil mil gaye toh um khil gaye’- which is almost like a second song with a life of its own. The song closes with Tariq, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora and the whole audience breaking into ‘Dum Maro Dum’ and we get the third song. Nasir Husain repeated this kind of song picturisation in ‘Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin’ and ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai’. Mansoor Khan followed his father’s formula of two-three songs in one with ‘Jawaan ho yaaro yeh tumko hua kya’; ‘deewane hum pyar ke, parwaane hum pyar ke’ and ‘Naam hai mera Fonseca” in “JJWS”. Today we shall see one of the three.

We can see Aamir Khan, Ayesha Julka, Pooja Bedi, Deepak Tijori, Mamik Singh, Kiran Jhaveri, Deven Bhojani etc in this stage song which is sung by Udit Narayan and Vijeyta Pandit. It is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Jatin-Lalit.

Incidentally 13th March was Nasir Husain’s death anniversary and 14th March is Aamir Khan’s birthday. So here is a song connecting the Uncle and Nephew.

Song-Jawaan ho yaaron ye tumko hua kya(Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar)(1992) Singers-Udit Narayan, Vijeyta Pandit, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Jatin Lalit

Lyrics

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara aa
jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
ye maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano
ho dildaaron

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

mehnat se miley jo
uspe guzaar
dooje ke maal ko
thhokar se maar
aayegi idhar bhi
ek din bahaar
hoga yeh zamaana
ham pe nisaar

yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

isko chhoona nahin
hey raam raam
ye toh hai paap ki
gathhri tamaam
kab yeh rut badal jaaye
kisko khabar
lag jaaye hamein bhi
sone ke par

phir aise udenge
ham sab yaar

gulon se ladegi motar car
haseena hogi gale ka haar
arre yaaron mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

Hullo Atuldom

We are into the last month of 2021. This is my first post for the month, and we have a few super-actors celebrating their birthdays this month. Also, there are a few actors, who are no longer amidst us, whose birth anniversaries are in December. Here is hoping that I get the inspiration to write for each of those dates.

But today’s birthday is not of any well known film star. It is our very own Ben Katie’s birthday. We wish her a very Happy and Musical day. May we see more of her on the blog-space.

This post sees the 2002 released, Rahul Dholakia directed, Neeraj Vora written (dialogues), Kishore Dadlaney- Lal Dadlaney produced romantic-comedy “Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar” making its debut on the blog. It had songs written by Sameer which were tuned by Jatin-Lalit.

It had a cast headed by Paresh Rawal who played an egoistic, over possessive father to two lovely daughters. There is a lot of Mayhem when he discovers that one of his daughters (Kim Sharma, a doctor in the film) declares that she is in love with a man who is not a “Patel”. Further investigation by the father reveals that the prospective son-in-law (Jimmy Shergill) is neither a property-owner nor a professional. As if that was not enough to ruffle the fuming father’s feathers it turns out that the person is a mixed-blood Indian viz. part-Punjabi, part- South Indian (“Madrasi” as people who are unaware of the different states in south of India would like to say). This leads to a lot of hot-weather between Jimmy and Paresh Rawal which is definitely entertaining and I must say that it didn’t look ‘gross’.

I remember (vaguely) that there is a scene in the movie where Patel (Paresh Rawal) is shown to be organizing the catering for his other daughter’s (Namrata- played by Toral Mehta) wedding. That scene helps establish the kind of calculative mindset of ‘Roger Patel’ possesses. By the way, ‘Roger Patel’ is the Americanized version of Ranchod Rai Patel who likes to call himself ‘The Roger Patel’.

Neena Kulkarni, Ranjeet, Johnny Lever were also part of the cast. Today’s song shows us Neena Kulkarni- the loving mother- leading a set that approves of the match between Kim and Jimmy. The lively song has Gujarati and Punjabi words and even the tune has flavour of both the states. We can see Paresh Rawal is unmoved (he is one versatile actor, isn’t he? 🙂

This song shows us what potential Jimmy Shergill had and could have been a success in commercial movies too considering the handsome looks and sense of rhythm as far as dance is concerned. He was very good in displaying his emotions too as could be seen in the characters he played in movies like the Gulzar directed “Maachis” (1996), Yash Chopra’s “Mohabbatein” (2000) and some more from the Yash Raj stable.

Recently I had seen him in movies like “Happy Bhag Jayegi” (2016) and its sequel “Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi” (2018) both of which showcased his comic timing. I must admit that I liked what little I have seen of him in movies.

Incidentally, 3rd December happens to be his 51st birthday -here is wishing him lots of luck and good movies that allow him to show his full talent. By the way, he belongs to a family of immense talent. His paternal great aunt was the famous Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.

This song is in the vocals of Udit Narayan and Shraddha Pandit (some sites have mentioned that Poornima is the female playback, need confirmation).

Let us also wish Udit Narayan (belated, he turned a year older on 1st December). He has been in the music industry since 1980. He has had opportunity to sing with the legends Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Success came his way after a long struggle, in 1988 to be exact, when ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ from ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ ruled the air-waves and popularity charts.

He began his singing on Radio Nepal with Maithili and Nepali songs. He moved to Mumbai in the 80s and his debut was in the 1980 release ‘Unees Bees’ which had Rajesh Roshan wielding the baton, this was the song where he got to sing with Mohd Rafi. He has sung for even Dev Anand in ‘Swami Dada’. He is the recipient of 4 National Awards, 5 Filmfare Awards, and Padma Shri.

I am sure the followers of the blog will understand why I chose this song to go with this post. 🙂

Once again wishing our Ben Katie – naamkaran for Khyatiji done by our Sudhirji- a Very Happy Birthday.

Hullo Atuldom

10th September 2021 is actually 19th day of the Bhadrapada month in the Vikrama Nama Samvat of the Hindu Calendar. It is the 4th day after the Amavasya or the New Moon. This day is very special as it is the day when the devout Hindus pray to the elephant-headed God Ganesha.

This is one festival that is celebrated through the country calling it Vinayaka Chaturthi in South India and Ganesh Chaturthi in the rest of the country. But the Lord worshipped and adored is the same and the offerings and prasad are basically the same. The flowers that are usual are the Hibiscus and the Marigold. Leaves of tender Banana plant are used to decorate the puja stands and mango leaf garlands adorn the doorways to homes. The most relevant flower or plant used to worship Lord Ganesha is said to be the Durva Grass. It is said that once while fighting a demon, Ganesha ended up swallowing him. This gave him a burning sensation in the stomach. When all else failed a group of sages placed a bunch of 21 Durva grass on him and he felt better. Another story says that Lord Ganesha suffered from a burning sensation after being cursed by a celestial woman. He became a recipient of the bane after rejecting her marriage proposal. Therefore, to rid himself of the discomfort and agony, Lord Ganesha placed a few strands of the Durva on his head. But Durva Grass is one of the offerings
Another common factor in the worship of Ganesha is the Modak – a sweet preparation made variously with Rice flour exterior and a filling made of coconut which is sweetened mostly with jaggery as in some parts of the country. Modak made from thickened milk (khova) and flavoured with saffron and cardamom are also offered specially in the Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals. We in South India also have a savoury variation of the Modak. There is a story associated with Ganesha’s love for the Modak. Devi Parvati- the mother of Shri Ganesh and Shri Kartikeya- gave a modak to the two brothers. But both didn’t feel like sharing it with the other. So, as a way to decide who will get it, the mother asked her sons to take three rounds of the world and the winner would get the modak. Kartikeya promptly set off on his Peacook to abide with what his mother had said. Ganesha won the modak by taking three rounds of his parents as they meant the world for him. Such is the love that the lord has for the humble Modak.

As a child I used to visit my neighbour’s home when they brought beautiful clay idols of the god. That aunty taught me and other kids of the apartment all the associated aartis and bhajans which have been handed down from generations. Personally, I have no idea of who the original writers were but I keep seeing them used in films too, down the years. And each film credits a different writer as being the lyricist. Like for example, I found a movie called “Jai Ganesh” (1977) which credited “Sukhakarta dukharta varta vighnanchi” to Bharat Vyas and Visweswar Sharma. And I always thought it was a traditional aarthi; of course closer inspection brought out Hindi words and the original was possibly in Marathi. (I could be wrong about all of this though) I have myself shared two Ganesh aarathis on the blog which were credited to Mayur Puri (Riddhi siddhi vridhhi hoti) and Amitabh Bhattacharya (Deva shree Ganesha). These two displayed the feelings of the on-screen characters and relied of the original aarathi towards their end.

Today’s song is a Ganesh aarati with all the words as I have learnt it but Sameer is credited as lyricist. Music is by the duo Jatin-Lalit and is from the 1999 release “Vaastav”.

The movie had a cast headed by Sanjay Dutt, with Namrata Shirodkar, ,Mohnish Behl, Aarti Behl (also known as Ekta Behl), Reema Lagoo, Shivaji Satam, Sanjay Narvekar, Deepak Tijori, Paresh Rawal, Mohan Joshi, Ashish Vidyarthi, Himani Shivpuri etc. It was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, produced by Sanjay Nikalje, had music by Jatin Lalit, Atul Ranade and Rahul Ranade. The movie won Sanjay Dutt a filmfare award for best actor for playing ‘an easy-going guy to a broken man’. ‘Vaastav’ had a tagline ‘The Reality’ and tried to depict the harsh realities of life in he Mumbai underworld. It also had a few good songs.

Today’s song happens just when the boys of the chawl have found that they have been used for personal gains by the underworld don, home minister etc. Raghu (Sanjay Dutt) finds out from the friendly inspector Kishore Kadam (Deepak Tijori) orders have been issued to eliminate them as they have become a thorn in the flesh of those who used them. The movie ends with Reema Lagoo shooting her (like Nargis in ‘Mother India’).

Let us welcome our ‘Pyara Ganpati/ Ganesh/ Vinayak… Ganpati Bappa…. Morya!!!!!!

This youthful joie de vivre song is picturised on a 20 year old Kajol (Born 5 August 1974). Lata Mangeshkar at that time was thrice her age ! Lata Mangeshkar had in the past sung for Kajol’s mother (Tanuja). She reputedly even sang for Kajol’s grandmother Shobhana Samarth (or at least sang in a movie – Narsinh Avtaar -1949, where Shobhana Samarth was the leading lady). What longevity ! And she managed to sound youthful even at a age when she was already a senior citizen !

Lyrics of the song and other details have been sent by Prakashchandra.

This is the last song and culmination of a short series of posts about inspired/copied songs. The team of creators of this song from Sangharsh(1999) is Jatin-Lalit, Sameer and Sonu Nigam. This inspiration behind this song is the OPN song from “Ek Musaafir Ek Hasina”.

This is the list of the five songs posted so far in this series:

Bhoori bhoori aankhon waala ek ladka hai 28 Sep 2020
Love ki ghanti baj gayi meri 28 Sep 2020
Raaja ko raani se pyaar ho gaya 1 Oct 2020
Saathiya tu mere sapnon ka meet hai 6 Oct 2020

Before internet and Youtube, it may have been easy to simply copy or lift a song created by someone else and pass it off as your own. Lay persons who are not actually conversant with music and composition process would not be able to find a link.

There is the famed instance of Madan Mohan doing this sort of thing, and using the tune from Sajjad Hussain’s “Sangdil” song “Ye hawa ye raat ye chaandni”, for his song “Tujhe kya sunaaun main dilruba” in “Aakhri Daao” (1958). In fact Madan Mohan went on to use the same tune for the song “hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo” in Anpadh (1962).

In fact, the tune is also very similar for this ghazal rendition in Laal Qila.

Coming back to the song from Sangharsh(1999), the singer Sonu Nigam is trying to sing the style of Kishore Kumar, which he does in many songs, but here the precedent is a Rafi rendition. It appears to a deliberate attempt to make the song sound different from the “Ek Musafir Ek Haseena” song.

I have seen this movie on cable TV, so can try to give a bit of the background. It was about the horrors of ‘child sacrifice’ and black magic like issues that are a part of ancient dogmas prevalent in some parts. Practices like child sacrifice for attaining immortality. Ashutosh Rana played the character of the tantric/fanatic, which is looking to sacrifice a particular child of certain physical attributes, at a particular time and hour determined by some principles of black magic on a full moon night. The takeaway of the film was Ashutosh Rana’s performance as the tantric.

Priety Zinta is a police officers who is assigned to solve this case of case of saving the child kidnapped by the tantric.

Akshay Kumar is a professor in jail, the crime is unclear. Priety Zinta needs Akshay’s help to solve the case and save the child from being sacrificed.

The topic was certainly unique, never dealt before in hindi films. Priety Zinta visits Akshay Kumar in jail and he manages to spook her so much that she calls her friend Aman Verma in Delhi to share her fear and insecurity. Aman Verma is trying to reassure her divert her attention from her fears of past and present by singing this song on the phone.

So this is a phone song too. The funny part is Aman Verma’s phone goes dead while is song is still going on, he goes to a public phone booth to complete the song. Complete it does, with the donkeys surrounding the phone booth 🙂 🙂

Song-Mujhe raat din bas mujhe chaahti ho (Sangharsh) (1999) Singer – Sonu Nigam, Lyricist – Sameer, Music Director – Jatin-Lalit

Lyrics

hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmm
hey ae ae
La la la

mujhe raat din
bas mujhe ae
chaahti ho
mujhe raat din
bas mujhe ae
chaahti ho
kaho na kaho
mujh ko
sab kuchh pataa hai
haan
karoon kya mujhe
tum bataati nahin ho
chhupaati ho mujh se yeh
tumhaari khataa hai
haan
mujhe raat din
bas mujhe
chaahti ho

meri beqaraari ko
hadd se badhaana
tumhen khoob aata hai
baaten banaana
nigaahen milaa key yoon
mera chain lenaa
sataa ke mohabbat mein
yoon dard denaa
mujhe dekh ke
aise palken jhukaanaa
sharaarat nahin hai to
phir aur kya hai
haan
mujhe raat din
bas mujhe
chaahti ho

la la la la la
la la la la la
la la la la la

tumhen neend aayegi
ab na mere bin
mujhe hai yaqeen
aisa aayegaa ek din
khuli teri zulfon mein
soyaa rahoongaa aa
tere hi khayaalon mein
khoyaa rahoongaa aa
kabhi gaur se
meri aankhon mein dekho
meri jaan tumhaara hi
chehra chhupaa hai
haan
mujhe raat din
bas mujhe
chaahti ho
kaho na kaho
mujh ko
sab kuchh pataa hai
haan
karoon kya mujhe
tum bataati nahin ho
chhupaati ho mujh se yeh
tumhaari khataa hai
haan
mujhe raat din
bas mujhe
chaahti ho
hmmm mmm
hey he ae
la la laa aa
