#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Missing movies of 1975-5)
——————————————————–
Today’s devotional song is from the 1975 movie i.e. a movie which has completed fifty years of existence in Hindi Film History. This movie is ‘Bhakti Mein Bhagwaan’. Regulars of the blog are aware that this year we will be adding the missing movies of the year 1975 which are not yet represented on the blog.
1975 was a memorable year for the Hindi film industry. It is remembered for some milestone movies of Hindi cinema like ‘Sholay’, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’, ‘Deewaar’ etc. Movies like ‘Geet Gaataa Chal’, ‘Julie’, ‘Mausam’, ‘Chhotisi Baat’, ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Sanyaasi’, and ‘Pratigyaa’ were the other top successful movies of that year.
This movie ‘Bhakti Mein Bhagwaan-1975’ was directed by H. Krishnamurthy for ‘Venkatpathy Picutres. It was produced by S.V. Rajagopal. This movie was originally made in Kannada as ‘Bhakta Kumbhara-1974’ where the lead actor was Dr Rajkumar.
The Hindi version of this movie was a dubbed version of this Kannada movie. The cast of this movie had Rajkumar, Leelavati, Balkrishna, Vajramuni, Dwarakish, Sridevi, Manjula and others. ‘Bhakti Mein Bhagwaan-1975’ has seven songs written by Pyarelal Santoshi, Vinod Sharma and Shrikant Telang.
I am reproducing the text from the post of our beloved in-house encyclopaedia Shree Arunkumar jee, which he wrote while presenting a song from the movie ‘Chakradhaaree-1954’. In this post Shree Arunkumar jee has mentioned in details about the ‘Sant paramparaa’ in Maharashtra and about Sant Gora Kumbhaar.
In Western and South India, Gora Kumbhar (kumhar-potter) was a very well-known name of a Saint on whom films were made right from the silent film era. The first film on this saint was” Gora Kumbhar” made in 1923 by Hindusthan Cinema Film company, Nashik. A Tamil film ‘Chakradhari’ on the life of Gora Kumbhar was made by K.S. Gopalkrishnan in 1948. A Marathi film was made in 1952. “Chakradhari” was a Hindi film of 1954. “Bhakta Kumhara”-a Kannada film featuring the famous Dr. Raaj Kumar was made in 1974 and a Telugu film “Chakradhari”, directed by V. Madhusudan Rao featuring A. Nageshwar Rao was made in 1977.
During the Bhakti Movement period of India, many reformist saints lived in Maharashtra. There were thinking progressive thinking saints not only from Bramhins, like Dyaneshwar and Ramdas, but there were saints from practically every strata of the society and every profession. Saints from Schedule castes and untouchables had a large following in Maharashtra. These saints were from all professions, like Savta (Gardener), Narhari (Goldsmith) Tukaram (Baniya), Gora (Potter), Namdeo (Tailor), Sena (Barber) Visoba (Gope) etc.
There were many women saints also like Janabai, Muktabai, and Bahinabai etc. All these saints helped bridge the gaps between the affluent high castes and poor low castes in Maharashtra in that period. It was necessary for people to unite to fight the invaders. These saints contributed to literature too by writing Bhajans in the form of Ovees, Abhangs, Shlokas, Gaaruds and simple songs.
Sant Gora Kumbhar was popular amongst Vaarkaris (regular pilgrims to Pandharpur). He lived in the same period as Dyaneshwar and Namdev. The authentic birth date of Gora Kumbhar is not known. Generally, it is believed to be between 1236 to 1317.
Though the authentic date of birth of Goroba is not known, still he is traditionally known to have lived in a village named Satyapuri alias Ter. In some places this village has also been mentioned as Terdhoki. No detailed history of his parents and the childhood of Goroba is available; but he was known to be a pious and religious minded man. He no doubt attended to his business of manufacturing earthen pots from mud; but even while attending to his work physically his mind would all the time be meditating his favourite god Vithoba or Pandurang. He would also be chanting the name of God when his hands would be busy in work.
I have reproduced only a brief text above about Sant Gora Kumbhar. Interested readers can read the detailed post of Shree Arunkumar jee here on the blog.
Today is a big day for the devotees (‘waarkaree’) of Lord Pandurang or Vitthhala in the region of Maharashtra, Karnataka and neighbouring states who follow the ‘waarkaree tradition’. Hundreds of devotees visit to the Vitthhal-Rakhumaee Temple at Pandharpur in Maharashtra today and keep fasting today, and prayers are offered to lord Pandurang. It is an annual pilgrimage taking place every year on ‘Aashaadhh Ekaadashee’ (also known as ‘devshayanee ekaadashee’ when Lord Vishnu will go for four-month long sleep).
For today’s occasion I was looking for a song from various movies made on the famous Saints from Maharashtra. I came across this song that mentions Vitthhala or Pandurang. Let us now listen to this song which is in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor. Lyrics are by Pyarelal Santoshi and music is composed by G.K. Venkatesh- M. Ranga Rao.
Only audio of this song is available. However, the video of this song from the original Kannada movie is available.I am providing the link of this video here. If one listen to the song in Hindi and then watches this video, one can easily understand the Kannada song as the Hindi version of the song is almost verbatim translation of the original Kannada song.
Let us now listen to the today’s song and welcome ‘Bhakti Mein Bhagwaan-1975’ on the blog.

Avinash ji,
11 years old Sridevi had a minor role of Sant Namdev ‘s daughter. Later, she acted in HENNU SAMSARADA KANNU, 1975, as the second heroine and PRIYA, 1978 ( Tamil and Kannada ) as a heroine… Rajnikant n Ambarish.
All the movies with Rajkumar as a Bhakta/ saint had evergreen music and memorable performances. Example: SANTA TUKARAM NAVAKOTI NARAYANA ( Purandara Das ) BHAKTA KANAKADASA MANTRALAYA MAHATME.
I am surprised to see M Ranga Rao ‘s name bcs the Kannada movie had music by GKV only. P B Srinivas has filled life to all the songs.
