‘Duniya Kyaa Jaane’ (1971) was produced and directed by C V Sridhar under his banner, Chithralaya Pictures. The cast included Bharti, Pramendra, Anupama, Krishnakant, Nazeer Hussain, Sulochana Chatterjee, Mumtaz Begum, Manmohan, Mac Mohan, Iftikhar etc. It was a remake of C V Sridhar’s Tamil film, ‘Avalukendru oru Manam’ (1971). Bharti was the only common actor in both the versions. While, the Tamil version was a box office hit, the Hindi version did not attain the same status on the box office.

C V Sridhar (23/07/1933 – 20/10/2008), the producer-director-screenplay writer of the film had a successful space in Hindi films with ‘Nazrana; (1961) followed by ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ (1963) and ’Pyaar Kiye Jaa’ (1966). However, after these films, Sridhar faced his downfall with a series of flop films beginning with ‘Nai Roshni’ (1967). Things became still bad with Venus’s ‘Saathhi’ (1968) and his own banner’s ‘Dharti’ (1970). With ‘Duniya Kyaa Jaane’ (1971), his banner plunged into a deep financial crisis when film was a disaster at the box office. However, he rebounded financially with two back to back box office successful Tamil films with M G Ramchandran. Later, he directed two Hindi films, ‘Gehri Chaal’ (1973) and ‘Dil-E-Naadan’ (1982).

The lead actor, Premendra (real name: Trilokinath Parashar) got his first break in Prakash Pictures, ‘Holi Aayi Re’ (1970) when he was yet to complete his acting course in FTTI, Pune. He represents a hybrid of Manoj Kumar in terms of his face, Dharmendra in terms of the walking style and acting calibre of both in their early Hindi films. He had only a short stint of his filmy career with four films, all in lead roles during 1970-71. He did not want to work as a side hero or villain in the film. So, he decided not to pursue the filmy career. He got into the business of interior decorations for the high-end clients in Mumbai. He went back to his native place, Fatehpur Sikri sometime in early 1990s when his father, who was a landlord, called him back to look after his agricultural holdings. Premendra passed away in October 7, 2020, at the age of 78 in Fatehpur Sikri.

The story of the film is as under:

The film opens with a scene in which Arun (Premendra), his wife, Meena (Anupama) and Arun’s parents, (Nazir Hussain and Sulochna Chatterjee) have come to wish Bharti (Bharti) goodbye at the airport who is leaving for London for higher studies. Arun’s parents profusely thank Bharti for undergoing sufferings and her sacrifices for the sake of their family’s prestige. This is actually the end of the story. Now the story goes in flashback.

Ever since Bharti had lost her both parents, Arun’s parents have adopted her to take care of his close friend’s daughter. Both Arun and Bharti have grown up together. While Arun’s father is a judge, Arun is an architecture. Bharti is continuing her studies in the college and Meena (Anupama) has been her close friend in the college. Bharti is in love with Arun who does not respond to her overtures except that despite his busy work as an architecture, he meets all her requests and demands like dropping her to college, taking her to a park etc. Arun’s parents are quite happy that Bharti is liking Arun and they expect that one day one of them would come to them with a request for the marriage.

One day, Arun accidentally meets Meera when both were caught in the rain on their way. Since then, he has seen Meera while dropping Bharti to the college. After meeting Meena quite often, Arun falls in love with her. He tells his parents that he is in love with a girl and he is now ready for the marriage. His parents are happy on two count – first he has been avoiding talking about the marriage and second, they think that the girl he has selected is Bharti as per their expectations. However, when he reveals that girl he proposes to get married is Bharti’s close friend, Meena, Arun’s parents are taken aback and tells him that they were expecting his marriage with Bharti. Arun says that he has always treated Bharti as his sister. Anyway, they are happy that at least, Arun has agreed to get married. The problem for them is how to reveal this news to Bharti.

Arun’s father at last reveals to Bharti that Arun has agreed to marry her friend, Meena. After hearing the news, Bharti’s face shows sadness but she quickly comes back to normal by telling that she is very happy that Arun will be getting married to Meena who is a good nature girl. She even arranges the visit of Arun’s parents to formally ask Meera’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage. The marriage of Arun and Meena take place in which Arun’s college friend, Pran (Manmohan) also attend who is a playboy and runs a chit fund.

The married life of Arun and Meena is smooth and Arun’s parents are happy. However, Bharti is inwardly very sad for herself having lost Arun. However, outwardly, she behaves normally with everybody in the house. One day, Pran visits to meet Arun when he sees Bharti. With his image as a playboy, Pran tries to woo Bharti. She goes for outing with him but never accepts his dinner invitation in the guise of need to be back in her house by evening.

In one of her outings with Pran, Bharti comes to know that he has plenty of girls for one night stand. She tries to avoid him but he reveals her that if she does not meet him, he will expose Meena in front of Arun about the love letters she has exchanged with him when they were neighbours. To save the prestige of the family, she unwittingly agrees to give company to Pran.

When Pran finds himself in financial difficulties because of his failed chit fund business, one day he suddenly appears in Bharti’s room to demand Rs. Two lakhs to meet his financial obligations. She shows her inability to arrange the money for him. He threatens her that in that case he will have to go to Meena to get the money by threatening to expose her about their love letters. Suddenly, Bharti take out a revolver and threatens to shoot him unless he passed those love letters to her. Pran throws the letters on the floor but pounces upon Bharti to snatch her gun. In the shuffle, suddenly, a sound of gunshot is heard. All other family members come out and find the door locked. Arun break opens the door and find Pran dead and Bharti trying to burn those letters. Arun’s father reads the letters and Bharti explains the events that has happened. Bharti is arrested.

Arun’s father (Nazir Hussain) resigns as a judge and fight the case as a lawyer for Bharti. From the witnesses, he proves that Pran was in financial difficulties having serious issues with moral turpitude. He was killed accidentally while trying to snatch the revolver from Bharati. Judge sets Bharti free.

An article in The Illustrated Weekly of India, August 01, 1971, says that with this film, “Sridhar touches rock bottom. Grotesque in conception and bizarre in execution, the film reveals total bankruptcy”.

The film had seven songs written by Rajinder Krishan which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. One song has been covered on the Blog about 8 years back. I present the 2nd song, ‘shaam sawere nain tere mere’ rendered by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Premendra and Anupama while Manmohan with Bharti are also seen. The context of the song is that Premendra and Anupama go for a day’s outing after their marriage. Manmohan persuades Bharti that they also go for an outing. It so happens that both the couples have gone for outing to the same spot and they meet after the end of the song.
