My recent posts on this blog have been mostly presentations of devotional songs. One reason is that the holy month of saawan has commenced. Devotees of Lord Shiva or Bholey Baabaa are untertaking ‘kaanwar yaatraa’ to bring the holy gangajal from the Ganga river from places such as ‘Gaumukh’, ‘Haridwar’,Gangotri, Sultanganj (Bihar). Devotees get ‘gangaajal’ from these places and then carry the water pots on a contraption called kaanvar. Devotees then offer this water at their local shrines. Some devotees carry this water to various ‘jyotirlingaas’ of Lord Shiva or specific temples of Lord Shiva and offer it there. This is an annual pilgrimage undertaken by millions specifically in the northern parts of the country (including eastern and central India and parts of Western India). The devotees travel to the temples of Shiva while chanting ‘bol bam’ throughout the journey.
One of the major destination during this annual pilgrimage is the temple of Baba Taaraknath in the state of West Bengal situated in the town of Taarkeshwar. A movie with the title “Baba Taraknath” was made in Bengali in 1977. The Hindi version of this movie with some changes in cast and crew was released in 1980.
The song under discussion celebrates this annual pilgrimage known as ‘Kaanwar Yaatra’. It is from the movie ‘Baabaa Taaraknaath-1980’. The lyricist for this song is Kavi Pradeep. Kavi Pradeep has penned many songs dealing with mythology and religion. We will try to cover some such songs in the days to come.
“Baba Taaraknath-1980’ was directed by A.K. Chatterjee for ‘Sangeeta Productions’. Kedarnath Agarwala was the producer of this movie which was passed by Censor Board on 31.07.1980. The cast of this movie has Biswajeet, Sandhya Roy, Salochana Chatterjee, and many others. Dialogues of this movie were written by B.R. Ishara, Aarti Mukherjee, Anuradha Paudwal, Manna Dey and Bhupinder Singh were the playback singers for this movie. Kavi Pradeep wrote all the songs for this movie and they were composed to music by Neeta Sen. Datta Davjekar was the associate music director for this movie while Kuku was the associate editor of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by A.K. Chatterjee who also directed this movie.
Today’s song is in the voice of Bhupinder Singh and chorus. I have not been able to note correct words at many places, and I would request knowledgeable readers to provide the correct words there. As mentioned above lyrics for thesong are by Kavi Pradeep and music is composed by Neeta Sen. With this song the movie ‘Baabaa Taaraknaath’ is making its debut on this blog. I am unable to identify the actor/s lip syncing this song and also the others present there in the picturisation of this song. Readers who may have already watched this movie are requested to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
