Blog Day :

6210 Post No. : 19176

During 1970s, when I was in my teens, I used to maintain records of cricket. Nowadays, we have access to cricket records with the click of a few buttons on computer or mobile phones but that was not the case 50 odd years ago. At about the same time, I also started noting down the lyrics of Hindi movie songs that I liked. Those days were pre HFGK days when we had no idea how many movie songs were created by then. The claims of 25000 plus songs and 28000 songs by individual singers were entertained and published even in Guiness Book of world records those days !

It was in early 1976 that I got hold of a diary. It was a Government of India diary of 1974 issed to its employees. The person who originally owned it only wrote his name and designation in that and nothing more. My mama (whom I have described in detail in this post) got this “New Year” diary from its original owner. But being the “low brow” person that my mama was, who did not believe much in padhaai likhaai, he only wrote his name in the diary and nothing else. So that diary was given to my younger brother and it was used as a “home work” diary for him. My father would give him some homework in Hindi, English and math, and my brother would do the assignment that would be then checked by my father. This new year resolution lasted a few weeks and after that my father as well as the brother ran out of their new year resolution enthusiasm. So I took that largely blank diary in my possission. About ten odd pages of the diary that contained homework by my brother were torn off by me to make the diary as good as new, and I began to use it as my diary to note down cricket records and Hindi film songs. This diary has scorecard of second and third test matches played between India and West Indies in 1976. Both these test matches were played in Port of Spain. India scored a famous win in the third test by chasing a world record total of 406 in the fourth innings of the test match on the fifth day !

Soon enough, this diary became primarily a song lyrics diary. I would listen to HFM songs on radio on stations like Sri Lanka Broadcasting corporation (SLBC), Vividh Bharati and AIR Urdu overseas Service. If I liked a song, I tried to note down its lyrics. One needed to listen to a song several times before the lyrics could be fully noted down. So it needed great patience and regular listening to the concerned radio stations before one could note down full lyrics of a song.

The diary had one page per date of the year plus some more additional pages where details about India were given. The details of India those days make for interesting reading. The diary mentions that India population (according to the census of 1971) was 54 crore 80 lakh people ! Per capita annual income was Rs 589. The diary informs that literacy rate of India in 1971 was 29.5% and life expectancy was 53.2 years for males and 51.9 years for females.

Keeping in view the pages I had torn out and the pages that had cricket records, the diary had space for a little over 200 songs to be noted down. Before I realised, the diary actually got filled up. If I had to listen to a song five times to get its lyrics right, I must have listened to the two hundred odd songs five times each in the process ! Imagine the time that I had devoted in this process.

More than three decades later when I started this blog, things had become much better. Now one could get the desired song downloaded on one’s computer and one could listen to it several times, pausing the song at will and replaying it to get the lyrics right. So noting down of a song had before a vastly easier process in three decades.

When Raja visited me in October 2010 at Nagpur, I showed him this diary. Raja, bird of the same feather as me, loved this diary and got nostalgic for those days of 1970s.

This diary, now more than 50 years old, is still with me. Most (if not all) songs that I noted down in that diary remain popular to this date and they have been covered in the blog. I wondered if there are any songs in the diary that are not yet covered in the blog. I kept turning the pages, and I made some interesting observations. In those pre HFGK days, we did not have a list of movies and songs that were created in the past. For the details of these songs, we relied on the radio station announcers. If we failed to hear the details of the song, or misheard them, then there was no way to get the details again. In that diary, I noted down the name of a movie as “Jaan”. When I looked at the song-“ye raat ye chaandnee phir kahaan”, I realised (with the benefit of hindsight), that the movie name was “Jaal” and not “Jaan”. The diary contains this inaccurate detail. I did not correct it and let it remain that way for the sake of nostalgia.

I kept turning pages after pages and found that each and every song was already covered in the blog. I began to despair, afraid that I would draw a blank. Then, I arrived at page 199 (date 24 september Tuesday) In this page I had noted down the lyrics of a song from “Aaj Ka Mahatma”(1976). When I checked up in the blog, I found that two (out of four) songs from this movie were already covered in the blog. But this particular song (the most popular song from the movie) was not covered. So I heaved a big sigh of relief.

When I watched the video of the song, I realised that the song was picturised on the flop pair of Randhir Kapoor and Rekha. It was predicted that the two of them would fall by the wayside in due course. The prediction was accurate in case of Randhir Kapoor, but Rekha reinvented herself in 1978 and proved her detractors wrong.

“Aaj Ka Mahatma”(1976) was produced and directed by Kundar Kumar for Kundan Films, Bombay. The movie had Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Ranjeet, Bindu, Jeevan, Keshto Mukherjee, Manmohan, Manmohan Krishna, Kumud Chhugani, Poornima, Shetty, Keshav Rana, Abhimanyu Sharma, Anand Joshi, Kirti Kumar, Rajan Kapoor, Narmada Shankar, Bhagwan Sinha, Deepak etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. Two songs have been copvered in the blog. Here is the third song from the movie which was a popular song of those days as far as I was concerned. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Here is this song from 1976, brought for the listening pleasure of the readers of this blog. One of the few songs of my song diary that was not yet covered in the blog till now. 😉

Song-Chaaandni chaand se hotee hai sitaaron se naheen (Aaj Ka Mahatma)(1976) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyricist-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen
chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen
pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen
pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen

phir to bulbul se milo aaj
bahaaron se naheen
ye nazar tumse hai aabaad
nazaaron se naheen
chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen

pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen

maine tumko naheen samjha thha
khataagaar hoon main
maine tumko naheen samjha thha
khataagaar hoon main
jo sazaa chaaho mujhe de do
gunahgaar hoon main
ab to zanjeer se baandho mujhe
haaron se naheen

badla lete hain magar apne hee pyaaron se naheen
chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen

pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen

paas bhee tum ho
aur aankhon mein nasha chamke bhee
paas bhee tum ho
aur aankhon mein nasha chamke bhee
ho to saktee hai galat baat
koi hamse bhee
shokhiyaan keeje magar pyaar ke maaron se naheen
lab na khul paayen to kah doongee
ishaaron se
naheen

chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen
pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen

doob kar ham ko in aankhon mein aaj rah jaane do
doob kar ham ko in aankhon mein aaj rah jaane do

aaj baahon kee inheen lahron mein bah jaane do
aaj kaboo mein hum aayenge
hazaaron se naheen

apna toofaan se rishta hai
kinaaron sa naheen
chaandnee chaand se hotee hai
sitaaron se naheen

pyaar bhee ek se hota hai
hazaaron se naheen
phir to bulbul se milo aaj
bahaaron se naheen

ye nazar tumse hai aabaad
nazaaron se naheen
