The name, Franklin Fernandes (03/05/1919 – 01/04/2007), better known as Frank Fernand may not ring bell for a majority of the readers of this Blog. Some readers may have heard his name as a musician, arrangers, orchestra conductor and assistant music director to some music directors of the golden period of Hindi film music. He was even music director for one Hindi film, ‘Chor Darwaaza’ (1965). He majorly worked with music director, Kalyanji-Anandji. Frank Fernand is credited as one of the pioneers of jazz music in Mumbai in early 1950s which got reflected in Hindi film music.

However, very few readers of this Blog may be aware that Frank Fernand produced two Konkani language films, ‘Aamche Noxib (1963) and ‘Nirmon’ (1966). By the way, many Goan Konkani words have been influenced by their Portuguese pronunciations. ‘Naseeb’ and ‘Nirmaan’ are pronounced as ‘Noxib’ and ‘Nirmon’ respectively. The box office success of two Konkani films encouraged him to produce his first Hindi film, ‘Priyaa’ (1970) which did not fare well on the box office. His next Hindi film, ‘Aahat’ was ready for release in 1974. However, the film’s release was held up for a very long time which finally got a limited theatrical release after 36 years on February 26, 2010. By that time, the producer, Frank Fernand, the lead actor, Vinod Mehra, actors, Amrish Puri, Keshto Mukherjee and Satish Dubhashi were no more.

‘Aahat’ (2010) was produced by Frank Fernand under the banner of Gomantak Pictures and was directed by cinematographer, Kishore Rege. The cast included Jaya Bahaduri, Vinod Mehra, Ramesh Deo, Bindu, Amrish Puri, Sulochana, Shriram Lagoo (debut), Satish Dubhashi (debut), Arvind Rathod, Anjali Kadam, Kuldeep Pawar, Ravi Raj (debut), Keshto Mukherjee, Junior Mehmood etc. Dharmendra made a guest appearance in the film as himself attending the premier of his film. The film’s story was inspired from Hollywood film, ‘Wait Until Dark’ (1967).

The film went into production sometime in 1971 and was completed in 1974. The gramophone records of the songs were released in 1974. The film was almost ready for its release when the sole distributor of the film got into some legal tangle which prevented him from releasing the film. As per the newspaper reports, later, the film’s distribution rights were bought by Salim Jaffer. The film was digitally restored at Famous Studios with fresh dubbings in respect of some main characters by dubbing artists (probably the original dubbing by the respective actors may have been damaged). The film in HD quality was uploaded on one of the video sharing platforms about a year back. I have watched the film only recently. If the film was to be released in 1974 in its original shape, probably the debut director, Kishore Rege’s career as a director may have shaped well. Unfortunately, he had to be content with being a cinematographer who majorly worked with producer Arjun Hingorani.

The film’s story is about a young visually impaired woman, the only daughter of a wealthy father who gets married to a photographer shunning the wealth of her father. The main theme of the story is how a visually impaired woman confidently handles the challenges she faces even though she has lost one of the important senses. Her remaining four senses are strong enough to face any challenges successfully without much dependent on others. The story in detail is as under:

Jaya (Jaya Bhaduri) is the only daughter of a rich businessman, Govindram (Satish Dubhashi). She is visually impaired and therefore Govindram is keen to get her married to his Manager, Kundan (Ramesh Deo) so that he looks after her well. Kundan is also keen to marry her under the assumption that after the death of Govindram, he would de facto become the owner of his business. Encouraged by Govindram, Kundan approaches Jaya with his marriage proposal. However, Jaya politely declines his offer. Soon after that, she is crossing the road when a car applies a sudden break to save Jaya from the accident. At the same time, Rajesh (Vinod Mehra), a photographer by profession, pushes her away from the car. Their brief conversations about confidence building in visually impaired person impresses Jaya and she falls in love with him. Jaya gets married to Rajesh and shifts to his modest house.

Jaya has been trained doing essential household works herself. There is Sikandar (Junior Mehmood) to help her in case of need. Rajesh is busy with his photography assignments. Even when he comes back home, he is mostly in his dark room of the house for processing the photographs. Govindram tries to convince Rajesh that he and Jaya can shift to his house as after all one day whatever he has in terms of his assets will pass on to them. But Rajesh politely declines. Rajesh leaves for Delhi on a photography assignment.

In Mumbai, Kundan has left his job with Govindram and has formed his gang to commit heist. He is planning a heist of a costly diamond necklace in a Delhi’s five-star hotel where the prince and princess are staying. In this operation, Kundan’s girlfriend, Rita (Bindu) a dancer has been assigned a special task as it is in her purse that the diamond necklace will land after the heist. They all have landed in Delhi so are the prince and princess. Simultaneously, another gang led by Sahab (Shriram Lagoo) has also landed in Delhi for the same purpose. In fact, Rita has double crossed Kundan by passing the information of the planned heist to Sahab.

Rita is successful in stealing the necklace from the hotel room of Prince and Princess. Instead of passing on the necklace to Kundan’s man, Birju (Amrish Puri), Rita reaches Delhi airport for catching the flight to Mumbai. Rajesh, Kundan’s other associates as well as Saheb are on the Delhi airport for catching the flight to Mumbai. At the security check, Rita is asked to keep her purse open ahead of security check. She does not want to expose the diamond necklace. She sees Rajesh and borrows his camera for some time in which she hides the necklace. She returns the camera back to Rajesh as flight departure is announced. All reach Mumbai where Kundan is waiting to receive her. Not finding necklace with her, Kundan doubts her integrity and assigns Birju to eliminate Rita. Before she is killed by Birju, Rita manages to tell Sahab that the necklace is in Rajesh’s camera.

Sahab’s trusted associate, Ravi (Arvind Rathod) visits Jaya’s house in the guise of Rajesh’s close friend. Rajesh has gone away on a photography assignment and Jaya is alone in the house. While Ravi goes on talking about his closeness to Rajesh with Jaya, at the same time, he is searching for the camera. However, he has to retreat as Sikandar returns. Next, Sahab makes three visits to Jaya’s house in three different guises – as the father of Rajesh, as Rita’s father suspecting Rajesh of Rita’s murder since they have travelled together from Delhi and lastly as police inspector for arresting Rajesh. All these visits are to force Jaya to handover the necklace to him which she is not aware of. However, after his third visit, Sahab is killed by Birju.

After getting the clue that the necklace has been concealed in Rajesh’s camera, it is now time for Birju to land in Rajesh house. He kills Ravi who is already with Jaya in the guise of Rajesh’s friend. Birju demands from Jaya the necklace which he says that Rajesh has kept in his camera. But there is no camera in her house. He threatens her to get the necklace and he would return. Birju reports the matter to his boss, Kundan.

After Birju has left, Jaya looks for the camera. She gets one and opens it. She finds the necklace. She hides the necklace inside a pendulum wall clock. Near the camera is an acid bottle which is used while processing the photographs. Rajesh had told her earier before leaving that there is acid bottle which she should be careful. Jaya pours the acid in a bowl and covers it with a cloth. She destroys all the lights of her house before Birju returns.

This time, instead of Birju, Kundan lands in Jaya’s house. He threatens her that if the necklace is not handed over to him, he would set the house on fire. He starts sprinkling kerosene all over the house. Jaya waits for him to come face to face with her. When Kundan comes towards her, she throws the acid from the bowl towards him making him temporarily blind. In the dark, he cannot see Jaya. Jaya sprinkles kerosene on him and threatens him that she would light the matchstick and throw on him. Somehow, Kundan makes to the fridge and opens its door for the light so that he can see Jaya and kill her by knife. With this, Jaya already exhausted, feels that she has lost the battle and pleads him to spare her. As Kundan comes near her, she picks up something and hit Kundan with it. That is actually Kundan’s knife which has hit him. He is seriously injured. Kundan makes his last attempt to kill Jaya but she kicks him making him falls flat on his stomach with something falling on him. He lays motionless.

Meanwhile, Rajesh has returned to Mumbai. He rings Jaya from a public telephone booth but there is no response. He comes out from the booth when someone gives him an message from Rita to visit her urgently. He goes and finds Rita’s dead body. He realises that it is a trap. The police team comes and arrest him. While he was being taken to the police station in a police jeep, he jumps out from the jeep and runs to reach his house. Outside his house, Birju tries to kill him by running the car over him. However, Rajesh makes him incapacitated and reaches home to finds Kundan dead and Jaya is hiding behind the fridge. Soon the police team also reach the house and get to know the sequence of events from Delhi to his return from Delhi. He says that he was worried about the well being of Jaya which forced him to jump from the police jeep. Jaya takes out the necklace from the pendulum wall clock and hands over to the police. The Police Inspector congratulates Jaya for the exemplary courage to deal with Kundan and Sahab despite being visually impaired.

Despite some loss in continuity while restoring the film after over three decades, I found the film to be interesting one to watch. The song-less second half of the film has maintained the thrilling tempo. It is out and out Jaya Bhaduri’s film who has the major presence through out the film. If the film was to be released in 1974, it would have showcased the excellent performances given by Jaya Bhaduri and the then emerging actors like Shreeram Lagoo, Amrish Puri, Arvind Rathod etc.

The film had three songs written by Kafeel Azar which were set to music by Chetan, a name I have heard for the first time. Perhaps, it may be a pseudo name used by the music director of this film. I present the first song from the film, ‘zamaanaa hai pyaar kaa’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi which is picturised on an unidentified actor.

I find this song in the film without much of the context. Perhaps some part of the scene preceding the song may have been edited out. Before the song starts, Jaya Bhaduri, as per her daily routine, is walking alone to become self-reliant. She is walking on the Marine Drive promenade when she suddenly feels the assembly of crowd who are watching a film’s shooting. She sits on the parapet wall of the Marine Drive listening to song picturisation with a smile.

Song-Zamaana hai pyaar ka suno dilwaalon (Aahat)(2010) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kafeel Azar, MD-Chetan

Lyrics (Based on Video Clip):

zamaanaa hai pyaar kaa
suno dilwaalon
khushee miley chaahe ke gham
galey se lagaayenge ham

jawaanee hai tumhaaree bade kaam kee
bachaa ke zaraa rakhnaa mere naam kee
jawaanee hai tumhaaree bade kaam kee
bachaa ke zaraa rakhnaa mere naam kee
ho ho ho
mahke mahke zulfon ke ye saaye
aankhon mein hai nashaa
main to giraa
bachaanaa
haa
zamaanaa hai pyaar kaa
suno dilwaalon
khushee miley chaahe ke gham
galey se lagaayenge ham

ijaajat ho to pee ke zaraa jhoom loon
adaaon ko tumhaaree bolo choom loon
ijaajat ho to pee ke zaraa jhoom loon
adaaon ko tumhaaree bolo choom loon
ho ho ho
shaayad aisaa maukaa phir naa aaye
hans ke jaan-e-wafaa aanchal zaraa udaanaa
haan
zamaanaa hai pyaar kaa
suno dilwaalon
khushee miley chaahe ke gham
galey se lagaayenge ham

yaa kaantaa hai ya phoolon kaa ye roop hai
jeewan to kabhee chhaaon kabhee dhoop hai
yaa kaantaa hai ya phoolon kaa ye roop hai
jeewan to kabhee chhaaon kabhee dhoop hai
ho ho ho
mazaa hai jab hans ke jiyaa jaaye
la la laa
la la la la laa
la la la la laa
zamaanaa hai pyaar kaa
suno dilwaalon
khushee miley chaahe ke gham
galey se lagaayenge ham

Thank you for this post Sadanandji.
I found many interesting tid-bits herein
(1) this was Dr Shreeram Lgoo’s 1st film- he may have been in his 40s when the film began (much llike A.K.Hangal & Boman Irani who also began their film career late in life)
(2) This must have been one of Jaya Bhaduri’s 1st batch of films but it released when she restarted being active.
(3) if this film had released when it was completed it would have given us an unusual pair “Jaya Bhaduri- Vinod Mehra” both who were starting their careers in 1971
(4) the actor mouthing the song here is Ravi Raj. I googled to find confirmation that he played Ashok Kumar’s eldest son Fali Mistry in “Khatta Meetha” & the central character of Chandu in the Marathi version of ‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’ – “Dost Asava Tar Asa”
(5) The person playing the director in this song is the actor who was seen in Gol Maal (1979) as the Iyengar who has a ‘sister who dances like Hema Malini’
Interesting journey of a film I must say

Peevesie’s Mom,

Thanks for the additional information about the film.

I have mentioned Dr Shreeram Lagoo (debut), Satish Dubhashi (debut) and Ravi Raj (debut) while listing the cast of the film. When you mentioned the name of Ravi Raaj’s Marathi film, his image got registered in my mind. He has worked in about a dozen Marathi films and many Marathi plays. He was a lead actor in Marathi film, ‘Shura Me Vandile’ (1975).

I googled about his current status leading me to a Marathi newspaper, ‘Lokmat’ which had given a brief profile of him while reporting his death.

Raviraaj (1942 – 18/03/2020) was born in Mangalore as Ravindra Ananthkrishna Rao. He was a Kanndiga. He adopted the name Raviraaj when he started acting in the film. He was a Science graudate from Ruparel College, Matunga and was working a pharmaceutical company. One day he had gone to local corporator’s office to lodge a complaint about the overflowing of gutter in his locality. The corporator was a Marathi film producer and cinematographer who offered role in his Marathi film which he was planning. The same corporator helped him in getting his first Hindi film. At the time of his death, he was staying in a rental flat in Vile Parle.

I also found on the internet that Ravi Raj had passed away in 2020 but didn’t mention that in my comment

Frank Fernand had also given music to Hindi film Gogola-1966,as Frank, with Mukund Rai Trivedi, in the name of Frank-Roy. Songs from this film are posted on this Blog.

Thanks for pointing out. I thought he was a different ‘Frank’.
