Today’s song is from the film Babuji-1950.
The film was made by Uday Productions, Bombay. It was a regular stunt film from the stable of Master Bhagwan – who had done a great job of keeping this genre alive through the 1940’s. In the beginning of the 1950s, Bhagwan turned to making social films, with the Blockbuster musical film Albela-1951.
Bhagwan was elated highly with the unexpected success of his foray into the social Genre and he went on making such social films. He had, however, not realised that 10 Albela was a novelty for his captive audience and 2) 75 % success of Albela was due to superb music by C.Ramchandra, who was at the pinnacle of his career that time !
The result was, all his social films failed. They were not flops, but they were also not hits. Thus, he not only got disappointed but ultimately he went into deep debts. he had to sell his Bungalow, all the 7 cars etc and shift to a common Chawl in a lower middle class area of Bombay. He was growing old and his type of acting and stories had become out of date. He became a glorified and respected junior artist in the film industry.
When he was running fast with success in the period 1942-1950, he had a fixed team of artists and a lyricist. He used to make films on a fixed story, by just changing names and places. But even then he was successful. He had his own studio too !
C.Ramchandra used to give music to his stunt films in different names like Annasaheb or Ram Chitalkar. For this film he had used the name P.Ramakant. This was because during that time he was under contract with Filmistan and hence could not use his real name elsewhere. This type of use of pen names was followed by many MDs. GM Durrani gave music as Gunjan, SD Batish gave music as Nirmal Kumar. Snehal Bhatkar used several names like Vasudev, B Vasudev, VG Bhatkar and Snehal, before taking up another pen name Snehal Bhatkar for the rest of his career. Actually his name was Vasudeo and Snehal was his daughter’s name. Similarly, MD Nashaad also used names like Shaukat Hussai Dehalvi, Shaukat Dehalvi, Shaukat Ali, and Shaukat Haider.
The question comes now, who was P.Ramakant ? This was a name used by C Ramchandra, because he was under contract with Filmistan and could not give music in his own name. It started with Raja Nene’s film Shadi Se Pehle’ in 1947, in which he first used his assistant’s name Paingankar (the joint MD was Karnad). His name was Ramakant Paingankar and was assisting Chitalkar for a long time. Later, for Bhagwan’s films like ‘Bhedi Bangla’, ‘Bhole Bhale’ (1949), ‘Babuji’ (1950), and ‘Bakshish’ (1950) also, Chitalkar used the pseudonym P Ramakant as MD (information from Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar).
The cast of the film was Bhagwan, baburao pehalwan, Vasantrao Pehalwan, Azeem bhai, Leela Gupte, Usha Shukla, Jaani and other regulars from the usual team. Today’s song is sung by Sulochana Kadam- one of my favourite singers.
Sulochana Mahadev Kadam ( Sulochana Kadam) was born on March 13, 1933 in Girgaon, Mumbai. In her childhood, she showed more interest in singing than schooling. At the age of 5, she started singing and used to sing in her school functions and during get togethers in her native village. It was during one such performance that a family well wisher took her to Gujarati stage for a singing and dancing performance which was well appreciated by the organisers. Recognising her flair for singing, her mother requested the well wisher to introduce her daughter to record companies which in those days used to encourage amateur singers. At the age of 11, she did her first song recording. Gradually she started getting singing assignments.
It is stated that music director Shyambabu Pathak gave Sulochana Kadam the first break as a playback singer in ‘Krishna Sudama’ (1947). She had done a small role also in this film. Her name appears in the credits as well as HFGK. She also acted in the film Refugee-48. Thereafter she got opportunities in films like Khidki (1948), Lal Dupatta (1948), Sunhere Din (1949), Rooplekha (1949),Babuji (1950), Bade Bhaiyya (1951). However she became famous as a playback singer only after her songs from the film ‘Dholak’ (1951) became super hits. As a result, she was very active as a playback singer during 1951-53. She said in an interview that one day she had to record as many as 10 songs. As per her Hindi filmography, she sang 136 songs in 68 Hindi films during 1948-53. Besides she also sang songs in Gujarati, Rajasthani, Punjabi and in some south Indian languages. She said in the interview that she had no formal training in music. She learnt singing from all the music directors. She said that it was under the music direction of Shyam Sundar that she got confidence in playback singing. In addition to Shyam Sundar, she worked with Gyan Dutt, Vinod, Husnlal Bhagatram among others.
In 1952, she got married to Shamrao Chavan, the director-actor in a Marathi film ‘Kalgitura’ despite opposition from both the families. That was, perhaps, the time when she got alienated from the Hindi film industry as she started giving stage shows along with her husband. At the same time, she got an offer to sing her first lavani song in a Marathi film. The song became a super hit and that led to getting her more lavani songs from Marathi films. Slowly, she got typecast as a lavani singer. She said in her interview that in her entire career, she has sung very few devotional songs and ghazals. Having established herself in Marathi film industry and also doing lots of stage shows across Maharashtra, she had already become so busy that she had to bid farewell to playback singing in Hindi films. In any case, she would have lost out to Lata Mageshkar, Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhosle who had already emerged as the main female playback singers.
Sulochana Kadam got many awards including the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2011. She is now 88 and continues to stay in Girgaon, Mumbai though as a renowned artist, she could have easily got an apartment under the Maharashtra Government’s scheme. She said in the interview that after living in Girgaon for more than 7 decades, she is in no mood to leave the place. Her son Vijay Chavan is an accomplished percussionist who had played the instrument with renowned musicians like Zakir Hussain and Ilayaraja.

munh humse mod ke
bada dhokha khaayenge
dil mera tod ke
dhoondhhte phirenge aap
humko ghabraaye huye
milne naheen paate hain
naina lalchaaye huye
kaun see hai reet ye

milne naheen paate hain
jaata zamaana phir
mud ke na aayegaa
aisee nazar dekh le jo
?? mil jaayegaa
chain se phir baithhnaa
aankhen churaaye huye
milne naheen paate hain
naina lalchaaye huye
kaun see hai reet ye
hain jo sharmaaye huye
milne naheen paate hain
