Today’s song is from the film Bade Bhaiya-1951.

From the title it seemed to be a family drama, but in reality this was a love story of 2 brothers, with the background of a Carnival and its various shows. This is what I call a misleading title !

The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay, owned by the film’s Director Aspy Irani. The Parsi community of Bombay made a lot of contribution to the early cinema. Remember that the very first Talkie film made in India was by Ardeshir Irani, a Parsi who owned a premier studio and a filmmaking organisation -The Imperial Film company, Bombay. Over a period, the Parsis found other interests and their participation in filmmaking reduced. However, some of the great and memorable actors and directors like Sohrab Modi, the Billimorea brothers, Pearl Padamsee, Boman Irani etc kept the Persian Presence in Hindi films going.

Aspi Irani was basically famous for stunt and C grade films. Aspi Irani was an important director from the early films. His full name was ASPANDIAR HORMUSJI IRANI. He was born in the Parsi colony, Panch Gardens in Dadar, Bombay on 8-10-1911. He started work in the film industry after he completed his secondary schooling and as all parsis are,due to his hard work,he soon attained a top rank in the Industry. He started directing films from 1936,the early Talkie stage, when the influence of Parsi Theatre, fantasies and dramas on folklore was the staple of stunt films. All such films had a basic structure and with a little changes here and there new films hit the screens.

There was a fixed audience for such films, but as the time went by,slowly the taste of the audience changed. However Aspi Irani continued with his style till the end.He did direct a few social films also but the handling of social films had a clear stamp of Aspi’s direction.

He must have directed about 50-55 films till the early 80s. Some of his films were,Naya paisa, Qaidi no.911, Barood, Shabnam, Badal etc. He was married to actress Husn Bano ( daughter of actress Shareefa).

On a fine morning on 23rd November 1986, Aspi left his home in the morning for work and never ever returned. No one knows what happened to him. Since then there was no trace of this man. Officially he was declared ‘missing since 23-11-1986′. What an end to a legend !

The cast of the film was Nirupa Roy, Agha, Suresh, Husn Banu, Yakub, Naaz and many others. The music was by Premnath (Wadhava). He was one of the ‘Same Name Confusion’ brigade, competing with actor Premnath (Malhotra). Actor Premnath was neither known as a singer nor as a composer, though he had been trained in music and also sang a couple songs in Hindi films.

PREMNATH the Music Director was born on 5-7-1918 in Gujranwala, Punjab. He learnt music from experts in Amritsar,Multan and Lahore. He acted in films like Shahr-e-khamoshi and also sang in Sohni Mahiwal-1938.

After marriage, he moved to Bombay. His first film as a Music Director was Rangbhoomi-1946. In this film ,a novice Mohd. Rafi sang many songs for him. His other films were Dharti-47,Chandrahas-47,Sagar’s Pehla pyar-47. He then produced a film ” Chand sitare”-48 under the banner of Ravindra Art productions. Mukesh,Lata and Geeta Roy sang in it. In film ‘Alakh Niranjan’-50,he used Mohd. Faruqi, Sulochana kadam and Rajkumari.

Premnath gave music to many films of Super pictures of Aspy Irani like Bade Bhaiya-51 and Maya Machhindra-51, in which Surendra, Geeta,Rafi and Shamshad sang. His another film ‘Qatil kaun’ in late 50s was not released. For this film, Rafi, Asha, Manna Dey, Mubarak Begum and Shamshad had given songs.

His films diminished. Sati Vaishalini-59,Main hoon jadugar-65 and Tarzan in Fairyland-68 were his last films.
After he stopped work as MD,he devoted his time for the welfare of Cine Artists as a trade union leader. As a Secretary,he served the music Directors Assn. for 30 years.

He died on 27-4-1993 at the age of 75 years.

I find that many people mistakenly credit actor Premnath as a MD for his films. Some sites include these films to the filmography of actor Premnath.

It is now clear that actor Premnath and MD Premnath were 2 different persons.

Film’s hero was Agha. he had done Hero’s roles in many early films. This was, perhaps, his last film as a hero. Agha (21-3-1914 to 30-4-1992) was of Persian descent. He was born in Poona. He was known for comic roles and modeled himself on Bob Hope’s style of acting. He appeared in 328 Hindi films in his career between 1935 and 1986. His son, Jalal Agha, also became an actor, most known for the song, Mehbooba Mehbooba from the film Sholay-75.

Agha confessed that he went to school for just three days, “that was as long as I could stand it”. He spent time “mooching” around Poona Race course, as he wanted to become a jockey and loved horses. Later in life Agha owned 2 Race Horses and was seen on Bombay and Poona Racecourses very often.

Agha came to Bombay and joined his neighbourhood drama group. His interest in acting took him to films where in 1933 he started as a production manager in Kanwal Movietone.

Agha’s first film was Kanwal Movietone’s Stree Dharma also called Painted Sin (1935) starring Mehtab and Nazir. However, his films Karwan-e-Husn (1935), Wadia’sRangila Mazdoor (1938), and Anuradha (1940) helped him gain recognition as a comic actor. He acted in Kikubhai Desai’s (Manmohan Desai’s father) Circus Ki Sundari (1941) which was popular and this helped in getting lead roles in films like Muqabala (1942), Laheri Cameraman (1944) and Taxi Driver (1944). His most active years were from the 1930s to 1960s.

Agha even sang 6 songs in 5 films, namely Stree Dharma-35, Toofan Express-38, Muqabala-42, Piya ghar aaja-47 and Meri Asha-50. He was the Hero in Bombay Talkies film Jwar Bhata-44, in which Dilip Kumar made a debut. Dilip was the secondary Hero. This fact Agha used to always tell. Later on ofcourse the picture reversed and Agha became a tailpiece to Dilip in his films. He had acted in 328 films in all.

Agha had 3 daughters and one son-Jalal Agha. His wife’s name was Masuma.

Agha died on 30 April 1992 of a heart attack in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He was 78 years old. He was survived by three daughters and one son, Jalal Agha. Jalal Agha died on 5 March 1995, in New Delhi, also of a heart attack. Agha was only once nominated for Filmfare Best supporting actor’s award for Ghunghat-60.

The story of the film was……

Astrological predictions sometimes do come out to be true as it happened in the case of Bankey( Suresh) and Bansi ( Agha), two small kids, about whom the Astrologer foretold that they will feed thousands of hungry souls when they grow up. As they grew up they found themselves employed in a restaurant serving food to thousands of people daily. They however could not stick to their jobs for long, due to their virtue of being too honest. Bade Bhaiya and Chhote Bhaiya, as they fondly called each other, got jobs in a touring carnival little knowing what hazards the fate had in store for them.

However Bade Bhaiya, through sheer strength of his will, used to infuse such a high degree of confidence in Chote Bhaiya that Chote Bhaiya managed to perform most dangerous feats such as MotorCycle jump, Dare devil ride on motor bike in well of death & plunging into a fire tank from a height of 100 ft. They became the heroes of the carnival very soon but they lost no time in losing their her hearts as well. Bade Bhaiya -Agha- fell for Madhuri-Nirupa Roy- the beautiful daughter of the carnival owner and Chhote Bhaiya went mad after another Carnival girl named Bijli-Husn banu.

While the two heroes were trying to win over the love of their respective sweethearts another drama was being enacted between a Jagirdar and his son Manohar( Yaqub), not very far off. The father insisted that the son should marry Lalita-Naaz-, an orphan, brought up by himself, while Manohar, the son, having little belief in marriages refused to accede to this fathers wishes and left his abode and got himself employed as motor driver, to Madhuri. His good looks and his talent as a conversationalist won him a soft corner in Madhuri’s heart. Finally,in spite of the machinations of Manohar, Madhuri realises her love for Bansi and Manohar goes back to marry Lalita. Bankey and Bijli too are united.

Enjoy today’s 74 year old song, sung by 18 year old Asha Bhonsle….

Editor note: All online sources mention Shamshad Begum as the singer. But the song has Asha Bhonsle’s characteristic voice which has no similarity with Shamshad Begum’s characteristic voice.
