Remembering the Legend – Mohammad Rafi Sahab on his 45th Death Anniversary
Rafi Sahab’s birth centenary year just got over, and we are now commemorating the 45th death anniversary. Within a few years it will be 50 years since he left this mortal world. What a short life he lived here and the impact of his life, singing, conduct and his progeny which he left in the world, is multi-fold and multi-dimensional. One can’t thank the Almighty for the blessings upon us all.
Rafi Sahab left total 7 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters in the world, some of them are no more, by now. But each one is most likely to have atleast 3-4 grandchildren. Among the sons, only Shahid Rafi is surviving. From one Mohammad Rafi stem 20-30(or more) who bear his essence and his DNA. And surely many more to come in future. That ‘s the family tree, without going into specifics.
This is ‘Qudrat ka Nizam” scheme of things. Each one of us has our own family trees, which grows, branches out, and spreads. Goes to diverse professions and places. Branches fall out and lose touch, this also happens. But all find roots and places and flourish. Is this not the greatest of blessings and wonderous ‘barakah” for the humankind? Still, we are bickering over small things, immaterial/material issues, and egos.
I found these statements on raficentenary.com :
“Today, as we begin celebrating a milestone event that he does not witness, his spirit has enveloped us all around and prods us to celebrate life. We feel like humming a line from one of his many filmy and non-filmy songs…….”
“A person who takes medicine must recover twice. Once from the disease and once from the medicine. Whereas music is doubly blessed. One to the giver and to the listener as well and where there is mercy in that music, it elevates to godliness and not just twice, many times over, many year over, nay several millennia over survives human memory and becomes an eternal source of inspiration.” (Partly contributed by Willaim Osler – Canadian Physician and applied to Rafi Sahab’s quality of singing)
Rafi’s music undoubtedly belongs to this class of music!
This time round, when I started looking for a song to post, I zeroed in on Chitragupt, and looked for Rafi sahab songs among his films. There is no dearth of appealing songs here too.
But I have decided to feature this ‘folk’ song, which is an important genre in Rafi Sahab’s vast variety. He seems to enjoy such songs more and somehow makes them sound very easy to sing. Why the music directors were so creative in the Rafi era? No doubt, that they had Rafi to sing those songs. He would rehearse, improvise and pull off the impossible.
This song s from the film Angaarey 1973, written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Chitragupt. Only one song is posted so far from this film.

The song invokes memory of folk flavoured songs by Rafi sahab in the 50’s in “bhojpuri’ of western UP dialectics. Songs of “Gunga Jamuna” the memeorable solo Nain lad jaihe to manwaa maa kasak hoibe kari . Another favourite of mine is from “Godaan” the solo song on Mehmood Pipra ke patiyaa sareekhe doley manwaa .
The tune of the song sounds familiar, the singing of course is very familiar and typical of Rafi songs, with starting lines in echo without music, and the song is carried over with the help of chorus lines in between.
On listening carefully, it shows the various type of ‘murkiyaan” of a special emphasis on some words, that he does in different fashion in repeated lines. This things can go almost unnoticed in the enjoyment and flow of the song. But the effort is made to increase the enjoyment, effortlessly.
Rafi Sahab surely did not do these special effects, in various songs, so that Sonu Nigam can sit on a sofa and dissect them, one by one, 60 – 70 years later😊. Though even Sonu’s genius cannot find all such special effects.
However hard people try and get the AI to reproduce Rafi magic, it is failing. For who can guess, what sort of special effect Rafi sahab would have given to a situational classic song like “Ami Je tomar”. Still people try and get views, make a living, become rich. I have no quarrel with that.
No issues with Sonu either. He had a great live show on 24th December 2024 to celebrate 100 years of Rafi Sahab at Nita Ambani Auditorium Convention Centre in BKC. A great show, for he did not listen to the fans present. Like a true, Junooni Rafi fan, he went on and on to sing the target 100 songs. Solo show, except for his father singing one song and Shahid Rafi also trying one song.
This time, I believe it is Javed Ali’s show at Shanmukhananda Hall, which is bagging all the headlines. I just checked, tickets for all the smaller or lesser costing shows are sold out. Javed Ali events tickets are still showing available at Bookmyshow. No wonder at Rs. 15000/- per ticket, even Mumbai public is deewane, mastaane parwaane of Rafi Sahab, will make this show a housefull too.
Meanwhile, for us it is youtube zindabad. Some live shows are planned, which I will try to catch.
So let us savour and enjoy this folksy, tipsy song. Also notable is the antics of Sanjeev Kumar, doing his best to take a leaf out of the legend Dilip Kumar, and do drunken, antics and dance with grace. Not bad effort at all.
