(Celebrating Saawan-2025-10)

Today’s saawan song is from the movie ‘Krishna Leela-1946’. When I came across this song, I was surprised that it was still missing on this blog, because the singer of this song is none other than Kanan Devi.
‘Krishna Leela-1946’ was directed by Devki Bose for Geetanjali Pictures, Bombay. It had Kanan Devi, Paresh Bannerjee, Devi Mukherjee, Ranjeet Roy, Parvati, Suprabha, Kamal Mitra, Gokul Mukherjee, Tandon, Kapoor, Krushto Dhan and others.
‘Krishna Leela-1946’ has as many as thirteen songs in it. Music for this movie was composed by Kamal Dasgupta. Two lyricist Faiyyaz Hashmi and M.N. ‘Pran’ share the credits for lyrics writing. However Geet Kosh has mentioned the lyricist name for two individual songs only and the lyricist for these two songs is Faiyyaz Hashmi. The singers for this movie are Kanan Devi, Ranjeet Roy, and Jagmohan. One song from this movie has been presented earlier on the blog by our senior member Shree Sadanand jee. Here is what he mentioned in his post about this movie and the director of this movie Devi Bose.
It is interesting to note that the film was produced by a Bombay based film production company and the cast and crew were mostly Calcutta-based. The film production company was a partnership firm of Lakhmidas Anand and Fateh Chand Kapoor, the latter being the father of Shashi Kapoor (Sr.). Under this banner, they produced 3 more films – ‘Sawaal’ (1943), ‘Lady Doctor’ (1944)’, and ‘Faisla’ (1947).
Another interesting point about the film was the association of Debaki Bose as director. He had mostly worked for New Theatres, Calcutta during 1932-41 except a short break when he directed films like ‘Seeta’ (1934) for East India Company, Calcutta. A list of Debaki Bose’s filmography seems to indicate that directing mythological and devotional films like ‘Chandidas’ (1932), ‘Puran Bhagat’ (1933), ‘Seeta’ (1934), ‘Vidyapati’ (1937) etc were his forte. His filmography list also shows that Debaki Bose had directed films like ‘Apna Ghar’ (1942) and ‘Meghdoot’ (1945) produced by Bombay based film production companies. Debaki Bose was the first director who experimented with background music in ‘Chandidas’ (1932) and using songs as the continuation of the story in the film. He is also credited with discarding the theatrical style of loud dialogues and gestures by actors.
As mentioned above this song is in the voice of Kanan Devi and lyricist for this song is Faiyyaz Hashmi. Music is composed by Kamal Dasgupta. I have not been able to note correct words where I would request readers with keener ears to please suggest correct words at such places, where I have marked them with (?).
Let us now enjoy this lovely and pleasant <em.saawansong.
