Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 36

For a change, we move away from Asha Bhosle solo songs to a beautiful duet she has sung with the ethereal voiced Mohd Rafi Saab.

Today’s song is “Khud Toh Badnaam Huye” from Chanda Aur Bijli (1969). The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri and the composer jodi is Shankar Jaikishan.

Four songs out of six have already been posted earlier, so this is the fifth song.

“Chanda Aur Bijli”(1969), was produced and directed by AtmaRam for Guru Dutt Films combines. The movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Padmini, Sachin Pilgaonkar aka Master Sachin, Jeevan, Kesto Mukherjee, Bela Bose, Ulhas, Pratima Devi, Bipin Gupta, Akashdeep, Mohan Choti, Jankidas, Jerry, Dev Kishan, Mahavir, Junior Mehmood, Muniraj, Pardesi, Radheshyam, Zebunnissa, Randhir, Johnny, Farooque, Kuddoos, Abubakkar, Jayashree etc in it.

The basic story is:

A destitute, pregnant woman delivers a boy during a stormy night in a village hut and dies shortly thereafter. The midwife conceals the mother’s ornaments and a locket (proof of the boy’s royal heritage) before handing the body to an orphanage.

The boy, named Chandu (Chanda), grows up in the orphanage where the manager and his accomplice mistreat the children. However, Chanda’s innate nobility compels him to stand up for them.

On her deathbed, the midwife confesses to the orphanage manager and provides the proof of Chanda’s birth to atone for her guilt—but the manager conspires with the family’s adopted heir to eliminate Chanda.

Chanda flees and, by chance, joins a gang of petty thieves in Bombay. He meets and befriends Bijli, who shields him from the guild’s dangerous leader, Ustad Bhagatram.

As Chanda struggles to adapt to life in the gang, Bijli— who is romantically linked with Sheroo (Sanjeev Kumar)— grows protective of him. In the film’s emotional arcs, Sheroo and Bijli fall in love amidst haunting backdrops like graveyards and deserted railway carriages.

During a robbery attempt at what turns out to be his own ancestral home, Chanda finally reconnects with his real grandparents. The story resolves with Chanda not only reclaiming his rightful place but also inspiring a moral transformation in the gang members.

The film’s story draws heavily from Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist, reimagined in an Indian context.

The song is lip synced by Padmini and Sanjeev Kumar.

Song-Khud to badnaam huye humko badnaam kiya (Chanda Aur Bijli)(1969) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics:

teri chaahat mein sanam
hum ne bada kaam kiya
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
khud to badnam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya aa
khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya
khud to badnaam

aaj nazren to mila
aankh hai paimaana tera
jhoom ke pi le sanam
pyaar hai maikhaana tera
apnee aankhon se sada
mujhko pilaana saaqee
ek pyaase ko kaheen
bhool na jaana saaqee
khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya

khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya aa
khud to badnaam

raaz-e-dil kya hai bataaoon
toh bataana mushqil
aur aahon ko chhupaqon to chhupaana mushqil
haaye
haqye ye naaz ye andaaz
na dekha humne
aaj to tum mujhe
jannat kee paree lagtee ho

khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya aa
khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya
khud to badnaam

pyaar kee aisee do raahon pe
hai jeevan mera
ek taraf jaan meree
ek taraf dil hai mera
aaj to dil tere
kadamon pe jhuka jaata hai
tere jalwon se yeh
madhosh huaa jaata hai
khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiya

khud to badnaam huye ae
hum ko badnaam kiyaa aa
khud to badnaam huye ae
hamko badnaam kiya aa
ho khud to badnaam huye ae
hamko badnaam kiya aa
khud to badnaaaam
