(Gulzar Saab’s 92nd birthday 18th August 2025)

Today 18th August, 2025 is the ninety-seconth birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. On this occasion we are celebrating his birthday here on this blog by posting songs penned by him.

In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Naram Garam-1981’. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for Film Group, Bombay. This movie was produced by Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh. The cast of this movie has Amol Palekar, Swaroop Sampat, Utpal Dutt, A.K. Hangal, Kiran Wairale, Padma Chavan, Suresh Chatwal, Anand, T.P. Jain, Sunder, Javed Khan, Bishen Khanna, Vijay Ghosh, Saral Mukherjee, Adarsh Tandon, Mukund Dada, and Chandramohan Khanna, Devi Chand, Shatrughan Sinha and others. Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, Meena Roy, and Neelu Phule had a special appearance in this movie.

‘Naram Garam’ has six songs in it which were all penned by Gulzar. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar, Pancham, Sapan Chakravarty, Sushma Shreshtha and Shatrughan Sinha were the singers in this movie..

Gulzar had a long and fruitful association with director Hrishikesh Mukherjee which has given us some of the most memorable and unforgetteble movies in the history of Hindi Films. These movies have some great and unforgetteble music in them too. One such movie of this combination where the music was composed by R.D. Burman is ‘Naram Garam’, the movie whose song is under discussion. This movie is said to be a sequel to the Hrishikesh-Gulzar-R.D. Burman’s earlier combination ‘Golmaal-1979’. This movie was also the last movie where Gulzar and Hrishikesh Mukherjee collaborated together in Hindi Films.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. The song is lip synced by Swaroop Sampat. Amol Palekar is also present in the icturisation.

Lyrics of this song were sent by Prakashchandra long back. I have added the Devnagri script lyrics of the song.

The video link of the song include conversation between Amol Palekar and Swaroop Sampat. Listening to this conversasion can give music lovers some idea about the context of this song in the movie.

Let us now enjoy this wonderful composition, which is a Gulzar-Pancham collaboration.

Wishing Gulzar Saab a very Happy Birthday today. Our sincere thanks and gratitude to him for the enormous joy he has given us through his writings, his stories, his dialogues, his verses, and his lyrics!!!

Nice song selection. I recognised it as soon as I read the title.
I may be wrong, but RD Burman has said that he has recycled so many tunes (his own included) by a minor change in the beat, instruments used etc. Of hand I can recall two songs with similar tune
(1) https://atulsongaday.me/2008/11/29/saagar-kinaare-dil-ye-pukaare/
(2) https://atulsongaday.me/2008/08/07/humen-aur-jeene-ki-chahat-na-hoti/

There is a video of RD Burman talking about this phenomenon in music where songs are given a tiny tweak and presented with a different dressing
