We in this blog have achieved several milestones, but this milestone is something in its own league. Today we are celebrating a humongous individual milestone. With this post, Lata Mangeshkar reaches 4000 songs as a playback singer in this blog !
More than one decade ago, She had touched 1000 songs in the blog as the blog itself touched 3000 songs. Imagine, today she alone touches 4000 songs in the blog.
I had run a series on Lata Mangeshkar’s songs (yearwise) in the blog. That series, which ran every monday for 63 weeks (viz for one year and three months). In that series we had an indepth look at the list of songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies.
This is not the only attempt to prepare a list of Lata Mangeshkar songs of course. HFGK in its various parts lists her songs upto 1985. Then there is “Lata Mangeshkar Gandhar Swaryatra” book edited by Vishwas Nerurkar (published in 1989) that lists her songs upto 1989.
Recently, Snehashish Chatterjee published many volumes of Lata Geetkosh that listed all her songs in all languages and even non film songs.
Going through these lists and our own list, it turns out that we have counted more Lata Mangeshkar Hindi film songs than “Lata Mangeshkar Gandhar Swaryatra” (because that book only lists her songs upto 1989). It turns out that we have counted more Lata Mangeshkar Hindi film songs that even Snahashish Chatterjee ! According to his calculations (given in Volume XI, page 44, Lata Mangeshkar sang in 1805 Hindi movies in which she sang 5072 songs. According to my calculations, she sang in 1886 movies in which she sang 5270 songs.
No matter what the actual figure, it basically means that the figure of 4000 songs is perhaps the last time Lata Mangeshkar will touch a thousand songs mark in the blog. Out the remaining 1000 plus songs, many songs could be unavailable, so it will be a tall order trying to introduce all the remaining Lata Mangeshkar Hindi film songs in the blog. Thankfully She has also sung 257 Non film songs, so that will be a great help in this regard.
What song to discuss on this momentous occasion ? Bulk of her songs inclkuding her most iconic songs have already been covered in the blog. The special and rare landmar Lata Mangeshkar songs (like first Hindi song in a Hindi movie, First Hindi song in any movie) are all covered in the blog. So what song is available that would fit the occasion ?
While going through various Lata Mangeshkar songs, I hit the jackpot. I came across a Lata Mangeshkar song that does not figure in any song lists. It is not there in HFGK. It is not mentioned in “Lata Mangeshkar Gandhar Swaryatra” and it is not mentioned in Shehashish Chatterjee’s Lata Geetkosh either (as far as I can tell). It was not there in my list either.
This extremely rare song is from an unreleased movie called “Kaamdev”. This song was apparently recorded in 1960 or thereabouts. At least two songs from this movie (one Lata solo and one Lata Manna Dey duet) were recorded. The movie never got made and released. Vasant Desai the music director, seeing this great song ending up shelved, used the same tune in a Marathi movie utilising the voice of Asha Bhonsle. I gather that this song from Mythological movie “Swayamwar Zale Seeteche” (1960) is considered a superhit song in Marathi.
Much later, Lata Mangeshkar herself sang a Gurumukhi devotional song (sabad keertan) with the same tune.
All these songs sound superb to listen to. So it was a great loss to music lovers when this great Lata Mangeshkar song failed to get released. The song became so obscure that HFGK ,which lists songs from unreleased movies as well, did not mention this song and this movie in its relevant HFGK (part 3 or part 4).
So, as the 4000th song of Lata Mangeshkar in the blog, here is this superb Lata Mangeshkar song from “Kamdev”(UR)(1960). It is penned by Bharat Vyas. Music is composed by Vasant Desai. On youtube, this song seems to have been made available by two sources. one source in Vishwas Nerurkar (the editor of above mentioned “Lata Mangeshkar Gandhar Swaryatra” ). Theere is another source who has uploaded not just this song, but the other song (Lata-Manna Dey duet) from this movie as well.
Our thanks to music lovers and preservers who kept this rare song preserved for such a long period in such good condition and who have now uploaded this song online for music lovers to savour it. The song sounds as fresh as it was when it was first recorded (and not released).
With this song, we touch the milestone of 19300 song posts in the blog. The coveted landmark of 20000 is looking in sight.
I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose support in various forms is the reason why we are able to keep going on ond on. Here is hoping that we will reach and cross many more milestones and landmarks in future, discoveing musical gems in the process.
