‘Daasi’ (1981) was produced by Subhash Verma and was directed by Raj Khosla. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Vikram, Paintal, Radhika Bartake, Sidharth Kak, Dhumal, Leela Mishra, Sundar, Narbada Shankar, Anita Advani etc.
The film was planned in 1976 based on a Hindi novel, ‘Mangala’ (1958) written by Anant Gopal Shevde. The main plank of the story in the novel is that Mangala goes through a deceitful arranged marriage with a blind singer, Pandit Sadananda. As a revenge, she rebels against the marriage by seducing her husband’s best friend and finally eloping with him. In the end, Mangala returns to her husband, Pandit Sadananda and becomes a vocalist under his tutelage. However, during the film’s planning stage, the producer and distributors felt that the plot was too bold and the audience may not accept it. Raj Khosla majorly tweaked the story of the novel for the film by making the husband’s friend (Rakesh Roshan) as her ex-lover and making him a grey character. It is Rakesh Roshan who tries to seduce Mangala. (Source: ‘Raj Khosla – The Authorised Biography (2025) by Amborish Roychoudhury, Anita Khosla and Uma Khosla).
The film’s story follows a different plot, the gist of which is as under:
Anup (Rakesh Roshan) is Anand’s (Sanjeev Kumar) friend and an ex-lover of his wife Mangala (Moushumi Chatterjee). He has earlier turned down her marriage proposal. He tries to re-establish a relationship with her when he visits Anand’s house and stays with him for few days. Mangala resists his overtures. As a revenge, before leaving, Anup creates a suspicion in the mind of Anand about her character by falsely presenting that she was seducing him in the house but because of his friendship, he resisted her advances. In frustration, Anand leaves his house and eventually shifts to Mumbai along with Rekha, a courtesan who has become his disciple after leaving her profession. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he feels cheated because of his handicap. He turns alcoholic and develops a close relationship with Rekha who also loves him.
Mangala goes back to her aunt’s house in her village but her aunt sends her back. Having left in a lurch, she manages her sustenance by making her house a creche for small children. One day, when she comes to know about the precarious conditions of Sanjeev Kumar because of his alcoholism, she comes to Mumbai and manages to get herself hired in his house as a maid-servant (Daasi). She pretends to be dumb so that he will not be able to recognise her as his wife. She finds that Rekha is staying in his house to take care of him.
There is an added angle in Tara’s relationship. Gopinath (Vikram) has been the admirer of Tara when she was a courtesan. Thereafter, he has been managing Tara’s dance concerts during which he has started loving her and plans to marry her. But after Anand joins their concert programmes as a singer and Tara being his disciple, their triangular relationship becomes complicated as he does not want to antagonise Anand.
One day, Mangala’s real identity is exposed to Tara when Anup visits Anand’s house and calls by her name. However, without revealing anything, Anup leaves his house in a haste. Anand, on the other hand, has decided to marry Tara for which he requires Mangla’s whereabouts for the divorce proceedings. After hearing this, Mangala reveals the truth to Tara who gets angry with her. However, when Mangala earnestly requests Tara to get married to Anand for his betterment. Rekha mellows down and allow her to stay in the house as maid servant. She assures her that she would take a final decision about her suggestion or her staying in the house at appropriate time.
In the meanwhile, Anup has hooked two more girls. One of them, out of revenge, tries to kill him by driving along with him and deliberately driving the car to rolling down from the road. The girl is killed and Anup is seriously injured with sa little chance of his survival. He calls Rekha in the hospital and reveals the truth to her about Moushumi Chatterjee. As a redemption of his sins, he also donates his eyes to Anand after his death. Anand regains his eyesight and Tara sacrifices her love in favour of Mangala after convincing him about the innocence of his wife who was serving him in his house as his ‘daasi’ to serve him.
Despite tweaking the story and adding Rekha’s character, the film failed at the box office front. Raj Khosla felt that he should not have succumbed to the pressure of distributors and producer. While watching the film, I got the impression that the tweaked story appeared on the screen as cheap and childish. Probably, the audience did not expect from a director who had directed many classic films. With this film, Raj Khosla’s series of flop films started in the 1980s.
The film had seven songs written by Anand Bakshi (6) and Ravindra Jain (1) which were set to music by Ravindra Jain (5) and Rajesh Roshan (2). One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘piyaa bin jiyaa na laage’ rendered by Bhupinder Singh. The song is written by Anand Bakshi which is set to music by Ravindra Jain. The song is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar.
The context pf the song is that Sanjeev Kumar is a blind singer and Moushumi Chatterjee gets married to him by deceit as she was not told that Sanjeev Kumar was a blind man. After marriage, Moushumi does not like Sanjeev Kumar. However, gradually she starts liking him because all his actions speaks of him as a caring husband. For the first time, Sanjeev Kumar has felt that his wife has started liking him. So, as a singer, he expresses his feelings in this song which is liked by Moushumi Chatterjee. At the other place, Rekha, a courtesan who is being trained as a singer by Sanjeev Kumar is equally elated by his singing.
