‘Kaanch Ki Deewaar’ (1986) was an obscure film which I came to know only recently. The film was produced by Kamal Chaudhary and M N Yasin and the latter directed the film. Both the names are new to me and this was their debut film. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Om Prakash, Rajan Sippy (debutant), Purnima, Neelu Phule, Urmila Bhatt, Raj Mehra, Lalita Kumari, Murad, Madhu Malini, Jagdeep, Birbal, Hina Kausar, Jaishree T etc. The film was released on January 31, 1986, about three months after the passing away of Sanjeev Kumar.
It appears that the film took long time to complete or to get it released as I find that there is a song by Mohammed Rafi in the film who had passed away in July 1980. The film’s lead actress, Smita Patil had started working in the mainstream commercial films in 1981 by signing a spate of such films to prove that she can as well be a successful actor in such films. The same combination of producer and director had started one more film, ‘Waqt Kaa Sikandar’ (1996) when the film under discussion was delayed in getting released. It seems the second film failed to get completed or released.
The title of the film, ‘Kaanch Ki Deewaar’ (1986) is a metaphor for obstacles which are visible. Yet, the glass wall acts as an obstacle in achieving progress or success in the life. In the film, Amrish Puri is presently a dacoit but in reality, he was an honest man who worked for Neelu Phule. But his confidence was shattered when Neelu Phule failed to give back his saved money. As a result, the sister’s marriage was cancelled. In fits of anger, Amrish Puri kills Neelu Phule and becomes criminal. On the other hand, Sanjeev Kumar who appears to Amrish Puri as an innocent man from a village and as such he gives him the responsibilities to take care of his wife, Purnima and the daughter, Smita Patil was actually a dacoit who returned to his normal life after giving up dacoity.
The story of the film with some details is as under:
A mother (Urmila Bhatt) with her two minor sons, Jaswant and Vikram is travelling in their horse cart when a speeding truck hit the cart throwing them on the ground. The mother is seriously injured and dies in the hospital. Vikram is running after the truck to catch the driver and in the process, he remains missing. Jaswant becomes an orphan who is brought up by Chacha Miyan (Om Prakash).
Jaswant (Sanjeev Kumar) grows up and decides to search for his brother, Vikram (Shakti Kapoor). He comes to Mumbai in search of Vikram. He goes to a bank to withdraw money where Bhoop Singh (Amrish Puri) and his crime partner, Vikram Singh (Shakti Kapoor) loot Rs,50 lakhs from the bank. Jaswant is an eye witness who had seen them looting the bank. The police, suspecting him to be one of the gang members, temporarily detains him and is put in a lock up adjunct to another lock-up in which Bhoop Singh is jailed. During their conversation, Bhoop Singh finds Jaswant as an innocent man and reveals his past by way of the flashback.
Bhoop Singh was an honest man who was working for Lakshmi Singh (Neelu Phule). He stayed with his wife (Purnima) and his sister. He had saved his hard-earned money with Lakshmi Singh. But when he went to him to take back his saving for the marriage of his sister, he refused to recognise him. As a result, the sister’s marriage was broken and she committed suicide. As a revenge, he killed Lakshmi Singh. He turned a criminal and earned money for the family. Knowing that he can get arrested any time. Amrish Puri tells his wife to bring up his daughter, Nisha (Smita Patil) as a widow so that she is not aware of her father’s antecedent.
After revealing his story, Bhoop Singh earnestly requests Jaswant to take care of his family by staying in his house, which will not only give him a shelter in the city but also the time to search of his brother. Jaswant agrees as a practical solution for him in a big city. For identification, Bhoop Singh gives Jaswant a seal which his wife will identify with him. After getting released from the lock-up, Jaswant reaches Bhoop Singh’s house and presents himself to his wife to take care of the family as instructed by Bhoop Singh. However, Nisha does not like Jaswant because of his uncultured behaviour. She tries her best to drive him out of the house. However, her mother restrains her by saying that he is their guest who has come from their ancestor’s village.
Nisha has a great friendship with Rajesh (Rajan Sippy) as her college mate, which soon turns into the love for each other. They are going to get married. Rajesh is none other than the son of Lakshmi Singh who was killed by Bhoop Singh. Rajesh’s mother (Lalita Kumari) wants his son to take revenge by destroying Bhoop Singh’s family. Now Rajesh is in a piquant situation as he loves Nisha who is the daughter of Bhoop Singh and at the same time he has to keep the promise he has made to his mother.
Nisha has thrown a party in the night for her friends in celebration of her birthday. Her mother is worried as she would be very late in the night to arrive back home. Nisha assures her mother that Rajesh is with her and he would drop her back. However, she is not convinced. Jaswant offers to attend Nisha’s party to keep her under his surveillance for which he would change his appearance in the western attire. He has also learnt some etiquette and some working knowledge of English from their house cook, Mary (Madhu Malini).
Nisha is surprised to see Jaswant in his western attire at the party. Nisha resents his presence and wants to drive him out. However, Rajesh advises her not to create a scene and spoil her party mood. Together, they can tackle him during the party dance. At the end of the party, a fight between Jaswant and Rajesh take place in which Rajesh gets injured. Nisha returns to her house and asks her mother to tell Jaswant to leave the house at once, which she refuses. Nisha decides to leave the house and goes to Rajesh’ house where she hears the conversation between him and his mother of taking revenge against her family. Nisha is back home crying that Rajesh has cheated her in the guise of taking revenge against their family.
In the meanwhile, Vikram Singh along with his gang members raid Nisha’s house demanding Rs.25 lakhs being his share of the amount he and Bhoop Singh had looted in a bank robbery. Not finding any money in the house, he kidnaps both mother and daughter. When Jaswant returns home, he finds the house empty and learns from the maid servant of the kidnapping. From the wallet found in the house, he gets a photograph of Vikram Singh. Jaswant goes to his den and introduces himself as Durjan Singh, ex-dacoit of Uttar Pradesh who had given up the dacoity to live like a ordinary citizen. He offers to join Vikram Singh’s gang by saying that he has realised that honest life does not fulfill his desires. Vikram Singh takes Jaswant in his gang by test checking his success in one dacoity.
With confidence earned from Vikram Singh, Jaswant goes to the jail and meets Bhoop Singh pleading with him to give back Vikram Singh’s share of Rs,25 lakhs so that his wife and daughter are released and also the enmity between them is settled for a peaceful life. Bhoop Singh relents and gives Jaswant the place where he has concealed the money. Both Jaswant and Vikram Singh retrieve the gunny bag containing the looted money and go back to the den to get mother and daughter released. However, Vikram Singh tries to double cross Jaswant to get the entire loot of money which Jaswant resists. During their fierce fight, Jaswant sees a locket of Maa Durga in Vikram Singh’s neck which identifies that Vikram Singh is his lost brother, Munna. They hug each other.
Bhoop Singh escapes from the jail as he suspects that Vikram Singh may play dirty. On the way, he is challenged by Rajesh who has vowed to eliminate him because he had killed his father. In the fight, Rajesh gets killed. Bhoop Singh reaches Vikram Singh’s den and gets killed. The armed police team reaches the Vikarm Singh’s den and surround the place. Vikram Singh escapes on his horse. However, Jaswant follows him requesting him to surrender to the police. But he does not listen and rides faster. Finally, Jaswant fires a shot killing Vikram Singh. The film ends with Jaswant, Nisha and her mother going back to their house.
After watching the film, the first thought that came to my mind was why the seasoned actors like Sanjeev Kumar and Smita Patil accepted the roles in the film which was worst than a ‘B’ grade film. The story was disjointed at some places. For example, it was not explained as to when Jaswant had become the dacoit as Durjan Singh and when he gave up the dacoity to join the mainstream society. Another example is that when Bhoop Singh is jailed for killing Lakshmi Singh, how he joined Vikram Singh in looting the bank. With amateurish direction, dialogues and screenplay, no doubt that the performances of the main actors were below their best.
The film had six songs written by Kafeel Azar which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. All the songs of the film sound like the rehash of their earlier compositions. I present the first song, ‘baaton mein na taalo jee’ from the film to appear on the Blog. It is a duet song rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi which are picturised on Smita Patil, Sanjeev Kumar and Rajan Sippy. It is a party dance song in celebration of the birthday of Smita Patil who is surprised to see Sanjeev Kumar in western attire who was not invited to the party because of being a village bumpkin. Smita Patil wants to drive him out of the party but her fiancé, Rajan Sippy persuade her to let him be present and he would handle him during the dance.

I had heard this song a long time back on video, and felt that the camera was doing all the dance for Sanjeev Kumar & Rajan Sippy; while it was Smita Patil’s dress was dancing for her.
I didn’t know that this was a Shankar Jaikishan song, now i know why it sounds like “badan pe sitaare lapette huye”

To me, this song sounds like ‘aap yahaan aaye kis liye’ from ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’ (1971).
