Hullo Atuldom
“Hamjoli” (1970) was produced by Prasan Kapoor for Tirupati Pictures meaning it was Jeetendra’s home production. T. R. Ramanna was the director.
“”Hamjoli” was the remake of the 1964 Tamil hit ‘Panakkara Kudumbam’ (transl. Rich Family) starring M. G. Ramachandran. That film released on 24 April 1964, and ran for more than 150 days in theatres. The film was remade in Hindi in 1970 as ‘Humjoli’, in Kannada in 1978 as ‘Bhale Huduga’, and in Telugu in 1984 as ‘Intiguttu’. All versions except ‘Intiguttu’ were directed by the same director, T. R. Ramanna.
Anand Bakshi was the lyricist & Laxmi-Pyare were the music composers. Asha Bhosle, Kamal Barot, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar & Mehmood were the voices behind the six songs of the movie. The film has made it’s debut on the blog way-back in 2008 with THE THHUK song. It is still two songs away from YYIIPPEEHOOD. The following songs are already on the blog.
| Song | Posted on | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Dhhal gaya din ho gayee shaam | 22 October 2008 | (the thhuk song) |
| Haaye re haaye neend naheen aaye | 2 July 2009 | (the rain song) |
| Toone haan haan toone…hone lagee dil mein tik tik tik tik | 18 July 2009 | (Mumtaz guest appearance) |
| Ye kaisa aaya zamaaana | 22 July 2020 | (Mehmood special, highly analytical post by Maheshji) |
“Hamjoli” (or ‘Humjoli’ as the film’s title card says) was the story of two sets of rich fathers (as I can recall). One father (Pran) becomes rich by ditching his docile, loving & not-so-beautiful but wealthy wife (Purnima). He just goes on to marry the girl he loves (Shashikala) too, & even tries to kill his 1st wife; after the birth of their baby girl (who grows up to be Leena Chandavarkar ‘Ranibala’). Thankfully Purnima survives, which Pran finds out late into the movie, but not before the usual twists & turns of a standard Indian film.
The other rich, zamindar father (D.K. Sapru) has his grown up children (Jeetendra ‘Rajesh’ & Aruna Irani ‘Shobha’) walk out on him when they discover that he intends to marry a girl much-younger than the daughter itself as he is a widower.
Incidentally, Shobha & Ranibala are college friends & Rajesh promptly falls in love with the charming roommate of his sister. When they walkout of their father’s home the siblings land up in the same city as Ranibala, who has now been brought to the city (secretly) by her father (Pran), & is employed in her father’s office as a steno/receptionist/ secretary. She has a lot of clout in the office & ends up recommending Rajesh for a job in the organisation. Being in the same office also gives time for the romance to grow much to the displeasure of Manmohan (Shashikala’s nephew) who also has his eye on Ranibala. He feeds stories about the romantic jodi which leads Pran to cautioning Rajesh. So Rajesh ends up dancing with a cabaret dancer (Mumtaz) at a bar (the oldest trick used in films), leading to a heartbreak for Rani.
By the time the film runs it’s course of storyline, there is a resurfacing of the supposedly dead Purnima, return of the father (D. K. Sapru) after a change of heart, Pran revealing to Ranibala the reason behind Rajesh’s infidelity & Shashikala dying in the course of the climax.
In all of this, I forgot to mention a very important character- Shivram (Mehmood) who turns out to be a real-friend when Rajesh needs him. He helps the siblings by giving them a portion of his family home on rent, after getting permission from his father (Balram) & grandfather (Parshuram). Shivram also falls in love with Shobha & marries her. Mehmood played all the characters of Shivram, Balram & Parshuram as a tribute to the Kapoors- Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor & Randhir Kapoor (if my knowledge is correct, Randhir Kapoor had not yet made his acting debut when ‘Hamjoli’ released but was an assistant director in that period).
Manmohan who played a negative character in this film (as in many films) died on 26th August in 1979 due to a Petromax explosion accident on a film set, which caused a fire & he sustained severe burn injuries. He was a regular in films that starred Rajesh Khanna & Manoj Kumar. He played the role of Chandrashekhar Azad in the 1965 ‘Shaheed’. It is 46 years since his passing.
Leena Chandavarkar had her birthday a few days back on 29th August to be exact- she turned 75. She was frequently paired with Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, & Vinod Khanna.
Vinod Khanna played an important character in her debut film ‘Man Ka Meet’. She has also been romantically paired in a few movies with senior actors (senior than her i.e.) like Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt etc. She was seen in a few two-heroine films in her career with ‘Sarfarosh’ that came in 1985 being her last film. That had Sridevi as the other leading lady.
There was an unreleased film ‘Pyar Ajnabi Hai’ where Kishore Kumar was her hero. Her last released film was ‘Mamta Ki Chaon Mein’ where Rajesh Khanna was the hero, this film had been Kishore Kumar’s last as director, writer, producer & music director.
With this post we shall also wish the music director Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (of the Laxmi-Pyare jodi) on turning 85. Pyarelal Sharma (Pyarelalji as the industry addresses him) was the son of a popular trumpeter Pt. Ramprasad Sharma. It was from his father that he picked up the basics of music as also the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves. He began playing the violin at age 8 and practised for 8-12 hours a day. By the time he turned 12, he was playing the violin in studios to support his family.
He met Laxmikant Kudalkar at Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. Lata, who knew of their poor background, recommended them both to music directors of the day. Lata Mangeshkar, who knew of their poor background, recommended them both to music directors of the day. That is where the friendship began- in recording studios. In the beginning, Laxmi-Pyare created music that sounded similar to Shankar-Jaikishan, mainly because Laxmikant was a great fan of theirs.
Of the seven Filmfare Awards they won, four of them were consecutive victories for Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Sargam (1979) and Karz (1980). They have also won the prestigious “Lata Mangeshkar Award”. After Laxmikant’s death (in 1998), Pyarelalji has done some work independently. Yet, he always used the name ‘Laxmikant–Pyarelal’ for all the future compositions. These days he is frequently seen on television reality shows as a special guest.
Wishing Pyarelalji a lot of good health and fun times with his family.
