Hullo Atuldom

Has any follower of this blog seen the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”? What about “Chhoti Si Mulaaqat”? Or a few of Jeetendra’s movies of the 1970s like “Jawaab”, “Dildaar” etc. where he plays a rustic/ villager who’s sole aim is to tame the haughty, city-educated daughter of the village zamindar; something on the lines of TAMING OF THE SHREW (a concept which the ladies/ females of this generation will strongly object to) Lastly, I would also like to draw the attention of the followers to “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977).

Well I propose to introduce a song from the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”. It was produced by Pradeep Sharma (a.k.a Tutu Sharma, also Padmini Kolhapure’s husband). Harmesh Malhotra was the director. Laxmi-Pyare were the music directors for songs written by Anand Bakshi. Shailendra Singh, Alka Yagnik, Kavitha Krishnamoorthy & Anuradha Paudwal were the playback singers used. Jeetendra, Rekha, Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon, Rishi Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Om Shivpuri, Rohini Hattangadi, Urmila Bhatt, Sushma Seth, Jayshree Gadkar, Chand Usmani, Yunus Parvez, Guddi Maruti, & Shakti Kapoor and Pran were part of the starcast of this film. Tiku Talsania & Guddi Maruti were also in the film.

The film had a very straight-forward story:

Kedarnath (Om Shivpuri) & Narayan (Pran) are childhood friends. Kedarnath’s wife Sheela (Rohini Hattangadi) also has a friend- Jankidevi (Jayshree Gadkar)- in the village. Jankidevi has a son & Sheela has a son & two daughters. The mothers (of course, with the the approval of the fathers) get their children i.e. Jankidevi’s son Deepak (Rishi Kapoor on growing up) & Sheela’s daughter Jyoti (Neelam on growing up), married. Child marriage :). Kedarnath & family shifts to the big-bad city and become multi-millionaires. After all the intervening years, Kedarnath is still simple of heart & longs for his roots. But, Sheela & the children have taken to the life-in-a-metro as their way of life.

On a visit to his village, after years, Kedarnath spots Narayan’s daughter Rani (Poonam Dhillon) & decides that she is the ideal bahu for his family, calls his son Rajesh (Raj Babbar) over for a chat byah no mangni arrangement. Rajesh complies to his father’s wishes but turns his back on his wife once they get back to the metro as he is also his mother’s obedient son.

In the meanwhile, Jankidevi has come to the metro to claim her bahu Jyoti from Sheela & is grossly insulted. Jankidevi goes & narrates this to Deepak & he takes it upon himself to set things right.

Now in all this where do Jeetendra, Rekha & Shakti Kapoor fit in. From what I recall, Rekha plays a tawaif Sona who has a soft corner for Heera (Jeetendra) who is a goon with a golden heart. Sher Singh (Shakti Kapoor) also has his eye on Sona & hence is Heera’s rival. Also Sona is the girl who Sheela has chosen for her son Rajesh as she can bring in a lot of dowry.

A very straight-forward story, correct? 🙂

After reading the story of “Amiri Garibi” above, I am sure the questions I posed in the opening of this post have been explained- “Chhoti Si Mulaaqat” had Uttam Kumar (whose 99th birthday happened to be on 3rd September) come to claim his bride from childhood Vyjayanthimala. That part of the story has been repeated with Rishi Kapoor & Neelam in “Amiri Garibi”. Also, being city-bred Neelam has to be made a Indian Bahu & that part of the story has been lifted from “Jawaab”, “Dildaar” & many more movies that advocate East is Best, West is Evil & Village life is better and Taming Of The Shrew.

How did I rediscover this film? I googled for films that had Shakti Kapoor & Rishi Kapoor in the cast with special preference (if possible) of them appearing together in some song & dance sequence. I know the two actors have acted in numerous films as hero & villain, friends, etc. The first films that I thought up was of ‘Sargam’ (1979), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Bol Radha Bol’ (1992), and a lot more. I settled for this film because of the Uttam Kumar connection.

Followers of the blog, who are familiar with my penchant for combining anniversaries, would have guessed that I tried to combine the birthdays of Shakti Kapoor (3rd September, turned 73) & Rishi Kapoor (4th September, would have also turned 73) but the closest I have got to is get a song from a film where both are in the cast. I remember seeing a distraught Shakti Kapoor (on news channels) on the day Rishi Kapoor passed away.

Here is the song from the film that will remind the followers of this song from “Amar Akbar Anthony”.

o meree saasu

biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
o meree saasu
o mere saale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
varna tumhe hathkadiyaan lagegee ee
le aaunga main policewaale ae
o meree saasu

dekho tumhaaree neeyat hai khotee
bangla bada har ik cheez chhotee
dekho tumhaaree neeyat hai khotee
bangla bada har ik cheez chhotee
sab paisewaalon ko jaanta hoon
tum logon ko main pahchaanta hoon
upar se gore
andar se kaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale

kutte galee ke sab chhod doonga
darvaaze khidkiyaan sab tod doonga
kutte galee ke sab chhod doonga
darvaaze khidkiyaan sab tod doonga
sone ke tum us pinjre ko kholo
jaa ke meree us bulbul ko bolo
apne balam ko andar bulaa le
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
o meree saasu
o mere saale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
varna tumhen hathkadiyaan lagengee ee
le aaoonga main pulicewaale ae
o meree saasu
o mere saale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale

biwi ke gham mein barbaad hoon main
biwi ke gham mein barbaad hoon main
daaku naheen hoon daamad hoon main
rishte mein tum saare mujhse kam ho
tum mein se jis ke seene mein dum ho
aaye mujhe is ghar se nikaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
o meree saasu
o mere saale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
biwi karo meree mere hawaale
