‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1982) was produced by B Nagi Reddy under the banner of Vijaya Productions and was directed by Vijaya Reddy. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rakhee, Rakesh Roshan, Deepti Naval, Amol Palekar, Sarika, Dheeraj Kumar, Lalita Pawar, A K Hangal, Paintal, Naaz, Leela Mishra, Dinesh Hingoo etc with special appearances by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo and Ramesh Deo. The film was a remake of the Telugu film, ‘Tayaramma Bangarayya’ (1979) which was also remade in Tamil as ‘Sathya Sundharam’ (1981). This was B Nagi Reddy’s last Hindi film as a producer. It is interesting to note from his filmography as producer that his last four Hindi films had Sanjeev Kumar in the lead role with music director, Rajesh Roshan.

Producer, B Nagi Reddy (02/12/1912 – 24/02/2004) has been a prolific producers of films in South Indian languages, mainly Telugu and Tamil since 1950. He was the co-founder of Vijaya Vauhini Studios in Madras (now Chennai) which was once upon a time, the largest film studio in Asia. His elder brother, B N Reddy was a producer-director while his younger brother, B N Konda Reddy was a cinematographer. I first heard the name of B Nagi Reddy as the producer of ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ (1967) which was his first foray in Hindi films. Thereafter, he produced ‘Nanha Farishta’ (1969), ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani’ (1970), ‘Julie’ (1975), ’Ye Hai Zindagi’ (1977), ‘Swarg Narak’ (1978), ‘Swayamvar’ (1980) and ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1982). All his Hindi films were the remake of Telugu/Tamil/Malayalam films. After the death of A Chakrapani, his close friend, philosopher and guide who was also the story/screenplay writer for most of his films, B Nagi Reddy seems to have lost interest in producing films. He had closed his Vijaya Vauhini Studios in Chennai sometime in early 1970s and had constructed Vijaya Hospital and Vijaya Health Centre in studio’s place.

B Nagi Reddy was also in the publishing business. After independence, he started publishing children’s magazine, ‘Chandamama’ in 12 Indian languages. In 1987, he was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award by the Government of India for his life-time contribution to Indian cinema.

The story of ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1982) revolves around a middle-aged couple, Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee who call themselves as Shrimaan and Shrimati. They have embarked upon solving the marital problems of the couples whose marriages are in trouble. They deal with two newly married couples – Rakesh Roshan- Deepti Naval and Amol Palekar-Sarika. These two couples are going through the rough patches in their marriage due to wrong choices of partners by their respective parents while arranging their marriages. The husbands have approved the choice of their respective parents by seeing their prospective wives’ photographs in which they are dressed to give the impressions of conservative/modern girls as per their expectations. Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee are successful in reconciling the differences by their counselling in a humourous ways. After their work successfully completed, Shrimaan and Shrimati take leave of them when both the couples ask them as to who really they are. At this point, Shrimaan and Shrimati reveal that following the tragic loss of their only daughter by suicide due to marital discords, the husband-wife duo have taken upon themselves in giving solace and counselling to couples whose marriages are in trouble.

The film could not repeat the box office performances of its Telugu original film and its Tamil remake. While there is a good chemistry between Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee which are reflected in their excellent performance, the same chemistry is lacking in Rakesh Roshan-Deepti Naval and Amol Palekar-Sarika. Also when the film’s major thrust is in the light comedy genre, the melodramatic scenes between Lalita Pawar and Deepti Naval seem to mar the light comedy genre of the film. Nonetheless, the film is enjoyable to watch.

The film had four songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Rajesh Roshan. Two songs have been covered on the Blog, I present the 3rd song, ‘ek naseehat mere yaaron sun lo’ rendered by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar who sing for Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee respectively. It is a party song in which Dheeraj Kumar and Dinesh Hingoo among others are also seen.

The context of the song is that after befriending Deepti Naval and Rakesh Roshan as a distance relative and as a friend respectively, Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee who call themselves as Shriman and Shrimati respectively come to know the main reason for the friction between husband and wife. While foreign returned Rakesh Roshan wanted a wife with a modern outlook, Deepti Naval comes from a village background with a conservative outlook. Shriman and Shrimati convince Deepti that the relationship between husband and the wife is that of adjustments of likes and dislikes. As their first lesson, Deepti is brought for a New Year Party in western dress where Rakesh Roshan has already reached for the party alone. He is pleasantly surprised to see his wife in western dress. He wants to dance with her but she hesitates. It is Rakhee who starts the dance by singing the song and Sanjeev Kumar joins her. This gives confidence to Deepti and she starts dancing with Rakesh Roshan albeit awkwardly.
