#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

The biggest festival of our country ‘Diwaalee’ is here and people all over, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and class, are celebrating this festival. However, life is not the same for all (just like ‘kabhee dhoop kabhee chhaaon’). The migrant labors working away from homes and families wait whole year for this festival to visit their homes. Relatives of such peoples await them to celebrate the festival together. I too have gone through similar situations in my working life (But those details are not the part of this post today.)

Life is hard and life is not the same for all. For some it is a happy diwaalee and for some it might be ‘sad diwaalee’ too. Still, we have to keep our morale high and not give up hope.

On our blog we have so far forty-two songs under the category of ‘Deewaali songs’. These songs cover all shades of moods that this festival brings. Some are joyous songs whereas some are sad songs. So the same festival of light brings different emotions among the characters of the movie depending on their circumstances that they find themselves in.

‘Diwaalee’ is a symbol for happiness and prosperity and when somebody refers to it as ‘aandhee aayee bujhaa gayee’ means things are not going well for that person.

Here is a melancholic song wqhere the lady is mourning the loss of her beloved, likening the two of them as “do deep” (‘do deepon kee diwaalee thhee aandhee aayee bujhaa gayee’…).

This song is from the 1949 movie ‘Kinaara’. It was directed by Ambalal Dave for New India Theatres, Bombay. The cast of this movie included Geeta Bali, Madhusudan Acharya, Ramsingh, Sharda, Kanta Kumari, R.S. Dubey, Pandey, Charubala, M.S. Bhalla, Jamu Patel, and S. Nazeer, Bismillah Khan and others. There are twelve songs in this movie which are composed by Madhusudan Acharya. Neelkanth Tiwari and Sahir Bhopali are the lyricists.

Five songs out of the twelve songs from this movie have been posted on this blog. Today I am presenting the sixth song from this movie which is in the voice of Zohrabai Ambalewali. This song was written by Neelkanth Tiwari and music was composed by Madhusudan Acharya.

Let us listen to this song…

Song-Do deepon kee deewaalee thhee (Kinaara)(1949) Singer-Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Lyrics-Neelkanth Tiwari, MD-Madhusudan Acharya

Lyrics

do deepon kee deewaalee thhee
aandhee aayee ee
bujhaa gayee ee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee
do deepon kee deewaalee thhee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee ee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee

do kaliyon kee nanhee see kyaaree
bhar dee jag ne chingaaree ee
dil to tootaa
yaad naa chhootee
aashaa tootee
khwaab naa tootaa
do tinkon kaa rainbaseraa
bijlee tootee
jalaa gayee
do deepon kee deewaalee thhee
aandhee aayee ee
bujhaa gayee ee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee

mere tadapte praanon ke panchhee
paas piyaa ke
jaa tu oo oo
bas do aansoo le kar chupke
charnon par rakhh aa tu oo oo
do deewaanon kee manzil thhee
khaaq banaa ke udaa gayee
do deepon kee diwaalee thhee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee ee
aandhee aayee
bujhaa gayee ee
