The Holy Festival of Chhathh Pujaa is going on at present. This festival is dedicated to ‘Chhathh Maiyyaa’ (Mother Chhathh) and ‘Surya Devta’ (Lord Sun). ‘Chhathh Pujaa’ is one of the biggest festivals of India which was confined to the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Uttarakhand in the past. But nowadays now it is observed all over the country whereever people from these states have migrated for job and cannot make it to their native places. Moreover those who have settled elsewhere in India have started to observe it in their new residences instead of going back to their original native places on this occasion.
Last year I was in Vadodara when this festival was being celebrated there.Arrangements were made at many places for devotees to offer their prayers. This year, after a passage of 10 years, I amback at the western border of India, viz at Katchch. Comapred to what I observed here one decade ago, the “Chhath Pooja” has grown up in scale and it is now being observed on a big scale even at smaller places.
Traditionally, various organisations in these parts help people celebrate “navratri festival” by making necessary arrangements. The same arrangements are nowadays being offered by them for ‘Chhath Pooja” as well. So, one can say that corporate social responsibility(CSR) that took care of the acrivities of “navratri festival” has started to include the activities of “chhath pooja” too in their corporate social responsibility(CSR).
On the occasion of this ‘chhathh parv’ I am once again presenting a song from a movie “Chhathh Maiyaa Kee Mahimaa-1979”. This movie was released as a Hindi Movie and it was directed by Tapeshwar Prasad for Indraneel Films, Bombay. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 16.04.1979 and it was from the genre of ‘religious’ movie. The cast of this movie included Maneesh, Gayatree, Namrata (new discovery), Jeewan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Shahu Modak, B.M. Vyas, Master Indraneel, Asit Sen, Rajendra Nath, Bhagwan, Birbal, Amarnath, Surya Kumar, Amal Sinha, Padma Khanna, Uma Dhawan, Sultaa, Geeta, Padma Devi, Usha Sharma, Jayant Meeta, Kavita, Sanchita and others.
“Chhathh Maiyaa Kee Mahimaa-1979” has ten songs in it which were written by Kavi Pradeep (six songs) and Vindhyawasini Devi (four songs). The music for this movie was composed by Bhupen Hazarika. The singers for this movie are Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Mangeshkar, Vindhyawasini Devi, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar. (The footnote in HFGK for this movie page mentions that the four songs written by Bindhyavasini Devi were composed by her as confirmed by herself).
Today’s song is in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and Usha Mangeshkar. Lyrics are by Kavi Pradeep who, as we are aware, had contributed many lyrics for mythological /devotional movies.
Only audio of this song is available.

Avinash Ji
Thanks for the post. It is only in the last 4 years or so, I became aware of the importance of ChChat Puja, for a section of people ( after people in my building complex -Bangalore-started celebrating it, though on a low key.)
I was not aware of there being a deity ” Chhat Maiya” , though I was aware of Sun god worship in this festival.
Today’s song has a devotional fervor like similar ones in Hindi films
